Breakfast is getting so much easier now that my 13 month old daughter has been adamant about feeding herself messily with a spoon! I can enjoy a cup of tea every morning while she eats her yogurt.

I had opened this up last night and enjoyed it so much that I had it again this morning. I made this with just milk! I heated the milk and added 1.5 heaping teaspoons of caramel matcha and 1 teaspoon of sugar. MmmMmmMmmmmm! The light green frothy brew was delicious. The caramel and orange come through in a gentle manner. The creaminess and sweetness add to this delicious breakfast. Again… dessert for breakfast? I can’t argue with that! I love this tea. I have to make this matcha with just plain hot water next time. I am sure it tastes equally good!

I love most jasmines but this one doesn’t quite work for me. After trying a short brew which was too floral and a long brew which was too harsh I tired a medium brew but it seems to me the green tea is a harsh tea at war with a heaping dose of floral notes in this particular jasmine. It looks nice but just the dry leaves smell more like perfume than tea. I finally poured it over ice which tames some of the harshness. If I use a cooler water I get perfume, hotter harsh and acidic tea. Drat, I suppose I’ll keep trying or perhaps a cold brew is the way to go.

Amaretto Matcha is my second favorite flavored matcha (over Caramel Matcha), and it tastes excellent! It has a strong and dominant almond and cherry taste exactly like Amaretto if you get it with at least the “Robust” flavor option, which I highly recommend, because you will not taste it nearly as well with the lighter flavor options. It makes a great dessert drink as well. Amaretto Matcha is also addicting, but do not worry, it will not get you drunk since it has no alcohol in it! Furthermore, it is much better made with lots of sugar than with Sweet ’N Low, and I prefer it iced. If you make it iced, make it by the pitcher to make it last longer, and use 1 tablespoon of matcha per pitcher. When buying this matcha, you have a choice between three grades of matcha: Starter (lowest), Royal, and Imperial (highest choice), but it tastes great with Starter matcha; the other two enhance the taste, but raise the price. I rarely drink it hot, but if you do, put 1 cup of water on the stove, but just wait until you see small bubbles in the pot, and use 1 teaspoon per cup of hot Amaretto matcha. Use 1 teaspoon per big glass of iced matcha too. I highly recommend Amaretto Matcha, and you can buy it at http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/amaretto-matcha.html#.U6pjSrWTiSo.

drank Irish Cream by Red Leaf Tea

T&C TTB Tea # 12 – Backlog May 25

(My last TTB backlogged review for now.)

I really need to try this again because I may not have paid careful enough attention to the flavour. It didn’t taste boozy to me. I love Bailey’s Irish Cream… when I was a teenager I’d always buy it and mix it with milk. Or just with ice cubes. Because that’s what people who don’t love the taste of booze do, drink sweet ones that taste like dessert and contain 5999 calories.

It was desserty….eh. I definitely need a round two of this at some point.

No rating for now.

I’m going to watch Sons of Anarchy now! At this rate I should be done S1 in no time!

mj

As a teenager, I used to take a little bit from each bottle in my parents’ liquor cabinet and mix them all together so there wouldn’t be a noticeable about missing from any one bottle. So gross!! I was so stupid LOL

mj

*amount

Marzipan

Great series!

ohfancythat

I used to steal some booze out of all my parents’ bottles and replace it with water, haha

mj

I may have also done that lol

Red Leaf Tea’s Caramel Matcha Tea (available at their website http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/caramel-matcha.html) is the best flavored matcha that the company has created. It has a wonderful flavor that is sweet and extremely enjoyable to sip in the early morning. It’s not overly sweet, so sugar and milk could be added to make this an after dinner treat to melt the worries of the day away. This is the tastiest and most versatile of their teas being appropriate to drink at almost any time of day. Red Leaf Tea provides a high quality and delicious matcha tea that comes in assorted flavors. The flavored teas provide an interesting experience for the taste buds by keeping me from getting bored while still getting a daily dose of antioxidants to keep my body healthy. I make my tea each morning by mixing the matcha with boiling water from my teapot in a thermos I bring to work and enjoy throughout the morning. Perhaps it is a limitation of how I make the tea, but by the end of the thermos, the last cup from the bottom is very dense with tea despite mixing between refills. I often mix this with some additional water to make the right consistency for my last cup.

Boiling 8 min or more 1 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

drank Peach Earl Grey by Red Leaf Tea

I’m really not sure what to think of this tea to be honest – it’s not outright unpleasant, but I don’t precisely love it either. The bergamot and peach flavours merge together in way that’s a bit like mango – but not quite – though mango is the closest analogy to what I’m actually tasting that I can think of. It’s distinctly tangy, especially when the tea is hot and gradually more sweetness creeps in as the temperature of liquid falls. It’s an interesting blend and I can honestly say I haven’t really tried a tea like this before. I may have to play around with it a bit before I can give a verdict.

Oh Em Gee. I MUST HAVE MORE OF THIS NOW!
Seriously, I have Read Leaf Teas open and am setting up an order because damn, this stuff is good!
I have never had matcha before and I LOVE IT. I wonder what the base matcha really tastes like since the caramel in this is AMAZING and powerful and the smell omg…

So yeah. I ADORE this tea. Cheri thank you so much for sending this sample.
The only problem is I drank like 16 ounces of it this evening and now I feel WIRED.
Uugh… I avoid caffeine before bed and I totally didn’t think of this as a caffeine thing but I definitely feel it haha. Now that I know, I will try to only drink it earlier in the day.

The flavor is a rich caramel flavor and something else I can’t describe that I imagine is just how Matcha tastes. I made it according to the included instructions for a hot latte. I made it with warm milk and added a tiny bit of sugar. It didn’t need much. It’s sweet as it is. I looooved it so much. :)

So! Yes. Will be buying more. Will be careful not to drink it before bed haha :D

I really like Red Leaf flavored matchas. I haven’t done a hot latte yet, but it’s on my list of things to do with my belgium chocolate matcha. I also want to try a matcha soda (matcha plus club soda) with my amaretto matcha.

Mandy

I got a sample from MissB and it’s the best. And oh wow I have a soda stream to make selzer water and never thought of using it that way! Brilliant idea!

Arshness

All those ideas sound delish. I’ve been on their site wishlisting so many Matchas. CHEESECAKE MATCHA?? I must try!

Cheri

Cheesecake is good, too. I’m all out right now. I keep hoping it’ll go on sale again.

Arshness

Haha.. I added like 20 teas to my wishlist on that site. >_<
I love their reviews thing tho. I will use it to get many teas. nodnod
First I’m stuck on their sales because they have a sample sale for $1.49 but I could get a large for only $2.49 but I could get TWO large and one FREE small for only 4.99 but I could get TWO large and a FREE large for only 7.48 omg I am in so much trouble.

Mandy

Have you ever heard of how blending a frozen banana makes almost like an ice cream? I like to blend some of this with a frozen banana and make a caramel ice cream like treat (:

Arshness

I have heard of that. I wonder how it would work hmm. :)

Cheri

A lot of people add banana and have matcha smoothies. There’s someone else on here (name escaping me at the moment) who does mango smoothies for most of her matcha smoothies.

drank Bubble Gum Matcha by Red Leaf Tea

TTBC Rd2

I’m not sure what I was expecting from this matcha, but it certainly wasn’t the pure, cloying artificial bubblegum flavour that came through. That isn’t a complaint, mind you – the flavour is completely in line with the name, but I was just surprised by the intensity.

It’s a very artificial flavour, also, so if that’s not your thing you may not enjoy this one. It was fun as a novelty, but I’m not going to be doing this one again any time soon…

The first Sil matcha I tried. Didn’t quite get the proportions right, so it was a little thin, but made a mental note for the amaretto matcha I had today and it was much better. I didn’t really catch much Irish Cream in this like I did with the amaretto, but it may be because I made it too thin.

One of the matchas from Sil! I was sorta ok with the Irish Cream I tried yesterday (not logged yet), but then decided to try things a little differently today with the Amaretto.

I used the whole packet, a small amount of boiling water, a little sugar and a little milk. I found I needed to add more milk, but other than that, it was very tasty! I do love me some amaretto.

Bought this ages ago to do some mixing and matching and never ended up getting there. So we’ve been graaaadually cold steeping this to sipdown. It’s a pretty decent cherry tea, a little tart from the hibiscus. Generally tastes like really water cherry koolaid. Mixes well with either vanilla liquor or ginger ale (I haven’t tried all three together but could also be tasty).

Thanks Ost for sending me some more of this!
I have some apple that have lost their crispness, so I decided to make a caramel about shake for breakfast yesterday. 1 apple, 1/2 banana, 1 cup milk, 4 ice cubes, and a little over 1/2 tsp of this matcha.
Even with the added fruits, the caramel still came through. Definitely a keeper!

Uhm, ok yes! This is everything I dreamt it would be! I love the matcha at Starbucks and I love caramel, so I knew this would be good! And it sure was!
I used 1/2 tsp with 1/2 cup cold milk, and the only negative thing I can say is that there were a few clumps. I’m going to try actually shaking it next time and seeing if that helps. The directions say to use a sifter and use hot water, but I don’t have a sifter, and its just so gosh darn good with cold milk!
This stuff is so so good, and I love MissB for sending some my way! I’m already planning an order for more!

Preparation

MissB

Oh, you’ll want to either shake it, or blend it in a blender to get the clumps out. Other method is to do it hot, mix until the clumps are gone, then add ice cubes. OR, get a matcha whisk (it isn’t called a whisk but rather a chasen, FYI), I think Red Leaf sells them for a decent price.

Mandy

Definitely going to try blending it in a blender tomorrow! Thanks, even with some clumps, this is so freaking delicious that it doesn’t even bother me!

I’ve had this for quite a while, but just haven’t been bothering with matcha at all. Um, how long does matcha stay good?

So I don’t actually know exactly how lattes are made, but I did my best this morning. I combined 3/4 hot milk with 1/4 boiling water and 1.5 tsp of this matcha, and then used my little frother device to get it all mixed up. That’s probably completely wrong, but hey it tasted good and isn’t that what truly matters?

So this definitely has a sweetness, that with the milk is almost too much for me, but I don’t like my drinks to be overly sweet. There is also a bit of a buttery flavor that makes me think of popcorn. This isn’t bad, but isn’t my favorite. However, I don’t know enough about matcha to really say much about the quality

Flavors: Butter, Sweet

Stephanie

Do you keep it in the fridge?

Mookit

I read it’s good for about a year? I can’t imagine you’d need to absolutely throw it out at the 365 day mark, though.

Stephanie

Yeah I’m sure it’s fine :)

Emilie

Does keeping it in the fridge preserve it? And I really don’t remember when I got this, but it might be right around a year actually

Stephanie

I keep mine in the fridge. But I know there are conflicting schools of thought on matcha storage especially flavored matcha!

Dr Jim

The downside of refrigerator storage is that when you open the packet, the cold interior attracts water, which then remains with the tea. The water attracts oxygen and the tea can in theory go bad in ways it wouldn’t in the room.

On the other hand, the main way that a tea ages is via oxidation, a chemical process. One fact that has stuck with my from my physical chemistry class so many years ago is that the rate of a chemical reaction doubles with every 10 degree C increase in temperature. So going from room temperature (about 18 C) to abut 3-5 C in the refrigerator should reduce the aging to roughly 30-40% of what you’d get at room temperature.

Backlog: This is my first flavored matcha! Unfortunately I don’t really have blender access. So I put some of this and some milk in a seal able cup and shook it up! I feel like I put in much more than the required amount, but it tasted like milk up until I added a bunch in. I’m not sure how accurate of a representation this is since I probably committed some horrible taboo by doing all that. Anyway, this was reeeeally sweet. I don’t know if I would say that I got caramel exactly, but definitely lots of sweetness, almost to the point of too sweet. I would like to compare other flavors, and try different methods, to see how well I did with this one.

Cheri

I’ve had trouble tasting some of the flavors, too. I add more than it calls for as well. I also found that it blended better and had a stronger flavor once I started first mixing the matcha with hot water (about 175° and I blend it with my milk frother thingy) and then add ice and milk and shake it.

Stephanie

I have found that cold steeping the matcha in milk overnight and THEN shaking it up makes a more flavorful and less chalky beverage :)

TeaBrat

If you can get your hands on a milk frother, they work wonders with matcha

Emilie

Thanks for all the advice! I’ll have to try these out and see what works for me.
TeaBrat, I may get a milk frother. I always thought they were giant pieces of kitchen equipment, but I just looked them up on amazon and I really like the little handheld ones!

I finally picked up some almond milk this morning so I could try my first Caramel Matcha Latte! Thank you to MissB for sending me this so I could give matcha a try.
I prepared 1/2 tsp of Matcha with 2oz of hot water and whisked it with my aerolatte frother. It worked great! Then I added warm almond milk and a little bit of Just Organic Tea’s sugar. I think this is my new addiction. IT IS SO GOOD. Perfect amount of caramel to matcha flavoring. It goes well with my Star Wars marathon. May the 4th be with you!

Mastress Alita’s January sipdown challenge Tea #10: A latte

Wanted to get this LAST prompt in before it turned February! I finished all ten prompts for January and 9/10 were actual sipdowns. Nice. I finished one package of this matcha in a latte, which… wasn’t that great. Very clumpy.. too much matcha, too little milk, entirely my fault, not the fault of the matcha.

Additional notes: heck yeah, cantaloupe matcha smoothie with vanilla yogurt and vanilla creamer (ran out of milk and had too much creamer about anyway…also, poured some of the cantaloupe juice in there.) I don’t think I’ve had a cantaloupe smoothie before, but it was very very good.

AJRimmer

I love making fresh cantaloupe juice, just throwing cantaloupe in the blender and not adding anything. I’ll have to try a smoothie version because that sounds great.

tea-sipper

oh yum. Yeah, just cantaloupe blended by itself would be amazing!

Cameron B.

I’ve had cantaloupe agua fresca and it was delish. I bet it would make an amazing smoothie, I love cantaloupe! :3

Mastress Alita

I haven’t tried cantaloupe yet! My matcha breakfast smoothies lately have been using up my Healing Butterfly brand Pumpkin Spice Matcha, blended with oatmilk, yogurt, and either frozen chunks of pumpkin/sweet potato/apple, or peaches (the pumpkin spice matcha blend works amazingly well against the peach!)

tea-sipper

WHAT pumpkin/sweet potato smoothies! I never thought of that.

Cameron B.

YUM peach with pumpkin spice! Like a peach pie! ❤

Lexie Aleah

Tea smoothies sound amazing might have to try making some. I have some matcha to use up as well though it’s unflavored.
