As I was hoping, this does indeed get better when you way overleaf it (I tripled my standard amount!), provided you like the bittersweetness of dark chocolate. It still feels a little thin bodied though the flavor is for sure amped up. Next time I’ll try making it super strong and then cutting it with cream. Right now, and as it cools upon resteep, it’s like taking an 80%+ cacao bar of chocolate, melting it down, adding milk or cream but not sweetener (it’s silky, rich, and intense but not terribly sweet), and drinking it in liquid form.

Even getting the prep just right I can tell this isn’t going to replace American Tea Room’s Choco-Late for me. That one’s very “cheap packet hot chocolate for little kids, complete with the intense granular salt-sugariness” nostalgic junky comfort food while this one, worked out to its best prep, is going to be more grown up, richer and more solid, well, cacao beany. There’s a place for both sorts of course, but the dirty truth is I probably will appreciate the former more when I reach for it because it’s, I dunno, an instant trip down memory lane without having to keep actual crappy packets of Swiss Miss around indefinitely going stale for just those moments. This kind of thing just makes me want to go back to Asheville and drink a mug of modern day Xocolatl from French Broad or something, or whip up some liquid Dagoba Xocolatl. Plus, that stuff’s intense no matter how you shake it; a little gourmet thimble’s worth and your taste buds and belly both feel stuffed to the brim.

I’m not conveying myself clearly; ugh it’s late. I guess what I mean is, when prepped right this does a bang up job at being that rich, thick, intense cacao bean drink one imagines in tiny cups. But part of me is more grateful that the cheap Swiss Missy substitute version of cacao husk tea exists. That both do is pretty great though, of course.

This stuff is good. Really good. I told myself when stepping into Herbal Infusions that I wouldn’t buy anything aside from maybe a tea to go. When I smelled this one, there was no resisting. It just smells like straight-up chocolate. And, sweetened chocolate at that. For some reason I get milk chocolate from it. Even once infused for a good 8 minutes, it smells like commercial hot chocolate mix in the best possible way. It tastes deliciously chocolatey but even through the sweetness maintains that great earthiness I’ve come to love in cocoa products.

I have big plans for this one. Lattes, added cocoa powder, blending with green rooibos. It’s going to be good.

I totally had this because Amariel did. :)

I added a tiny bit of sugar and a splash of almond milk.

Sadly, I’d rather have hot chocolate. The texture just isn’t there. Maybe steeping it directly in almond milk? But that seems like so much work right now.

Smells divine, didn’t live up to the promise.

I swear there was a period of time when everyone was raving about this tea but now it is consistently being knocked for being thin/weak. I certainly agree with the latter.

Plunkybug

I think I might use a tablespoon next time and steep longer. It is definitely thinner than hot chocolate, which can be good at times, but yeah, I understand.

OMGsrsly

I totally still drank it all. :) It is a pale imitation to hot cocoa, but it works if you don’t want anything too rich. Although I think I prefer Samovar’s Cacao Mint. Maybe I’ll have that tomorrow if my BFF isn’t planning to drop in.

Courtney

I’ve learned not to want cocoa from this one, but I understand the feeling. I love the Strawberry Cream version of it for a slightly thicker feel – and I love adding 1/2 tsp. of Cacao to other teas or to resteeps.

Courtney

I’m actually just steeping up 2 parts Laoshan Black, 1 part Cacao to enjoy before work. :)

@Courtney- Thank-you for that idea!

OMGsrsly

Ooo, as a mixer! I think I’ll need to do that. I gave my strawberry away to a friend already.

I am so glad I bought some of this, and need to go back for more ASAP. This is amazing!! Tastes just like dark chocolate. In a tea. I like that it’s JUST cacao, because I’m getting tired of those chocolate blends and really just needed something like this. I love it. Like Jessie, I can’t wait to do splendid things with this tea.

Still like this one just as much as previously – like a sugar-free (and dairy free) hot chocolate. I accidentally left the infuser at my boyfriend’s place, though, so probably won’t get a second infusion. Sucky :(

Here’s the trick for this tea: the longer you steep, the better it tastes. I usually can’t resist steeping it for longer than 6-7 min, and add a bit of soymilk. It tastes like hot chocolate. I’m honest. Forget about Carnation, this is MUCH BETTER.

MMMMM. Delicious. This is a dark hot chocolate… without the milk, and cream. It’s pretty good. I may have to try this steamed with some almond milk cause that sounds delicious in my head.

I’m so glad for whoever mentioned this company on the Steepster board. I picked up a few sample sized packs, and look forward to trying them all now!

This is one of Dan’s gems – it comes with a delicious smell of dark chocolate and tastes like a better version of hot chocolate. I’ve bought several portions as gifts, and plan on buying more for christmas presents. A great gift for someone who loves chocolate – stand out by giving them something more unique than a high quality bar.

I received this in QueenOfTarts Stash sale a few months ago. Thank you!

I added a ton of leaf for this brew. It is defiantly cacao, slightly bitter, but it is a very weak mouthful. I am not a fan. I think I would rather just make a cup of hot chocolate.
