Am I the only one that can’t say the word “s’mores” without thinking: “Please sir, Can I have s’more”?

I love how dry genmaicha looks so fun with the popped rice, kind of like Lilliputian popcorn. It also makes me think of the Muppets Swedish Chef doing his rendition of the popcorn song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvDvTnTGjgQ “de poppity corn!” Alright, enough random snapshots through my mind’s eye…onto the review:

When I ordered this tea I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea for me. A couple of years back, I got a ginormous bag of genmaicha for Christmas. I enjoyed it at first but I eventually drank it so often that I grew tired of the taste. In the end I was handing out samples of the dry tea to friends and family just to be able to get through it all, and on more than one occasion I used it as one of my ingredients in a homemade face scrub. Yes, I was literally bathing in the stuff! It was like a bottomless chasm stuffed full of genmaicha – you’d think that would be wonderful, but I’m all about the variety when it comes to tea.

I finally made my way to the bottom of the bag before we moved last summer, at which point I said “it’ll be a cold day in hell before I buy another bag of genmaicha”. But then Frank had to go and make this tea. Roasted Cacao nibs and Marshmallow root?! Sign me up!!! The genmaicha base is evident, but the additional ingredients give this tea just enough depth and character for me not to get the genmaicha nightmares again.

What can I say?…I’m drinking my words, and loving it.

GAH I WANT MINE NOW!

TeaLady441 12 years ago

Hehehe – I do that too.

Glad you are enjoying this. Mine just came TODAY!

jessiwrites 12 years ago

Oooh, and you are in Canada, too… right?

I saw that mine cleared customs on the 19th. I am just so dang impatient.

Ramvling 12 years ago

I’m eagerly awaiting my order~ I only was able to get on this when he reblended it. Dang did this stuff sell out fast.

Sweet Canadian 12 years ago

Me too Jessiwrites! I am also eagerly relating my order….

canadianadia 12 years ago

@Ramvling – Yes, This tea sells out uber-fast! I’m glad I managed to get my hands on it this time around. I hope yours arrives soon.

@jessiwrites – Yep, I’m in Canada I ordered mine on March 05th and it arrived yesterday (March 20th), but I live close to the Canada/US border so that may shave some time off of shipping? Ooooh! How did you find out when yours cleared customs? is there tracking? Hope you get your order soon.

@Cavocorax – I look forward to reading your tealog – I hope you enjoy it too :)

Sweet Canadian 12 years ago

I think everyone’s shipped about the same day, because Frank is busy with other work atm and can’t get things out as soon as they are ordered. I am in London, ON and as far as I know mine hasn’t come today, but our mail is not that good….once my package sat in the postal depot for 3 days before they attempted delivery :(

canadianadia 12 years ago

@Sweet Canadian – I find the postal service is sometimes great where I’m living, and other times it’s a tad slow. I imagine for the most part it would depend on how busy they are. I definetly lucked out this time. Hope you get yours soon

jessiwrites 12 years ago

Yes, mine shipped on the 13th. I did get a tracking number, but it wasn’t updated at all between when it left Wichita and when it cleared customs. I have absolutely no idea where it is right now.

Well, I guess I know that it’s somewhere in Canada.

I am also fairly close to the border, but in Saskatchewan.

Sweet Canadian 12 years ago

Mine came today :D It was in the mail when I got home.

canadianadia 12 years ago

@jessiwrites- I never noticed that there was a tracking number before, but I just checked my old email for my order and there it was. Neat-o! Fingers crossed that this feature will improve over time.

@Sweet Canadian – hooray! I look forward to reading your tealog!

I totally did not expect this one to go over well in a travel mug… but strangely, it does?!
Now that could be because I got my water from Starbucks, piping hot, and had to wait a few min before dunking the sachet… and probably burnt the leaves (ie. also any chlorine/alcohol residue)
Just sayin, that was totally unexpected and a delightful surprise. The marshmallow and toasted rice really came out nicely. A little too burnt in the aroma and taste for my liking. I’ll always prefer my standard Shmallow version of course :)

On a side note, I am so frustrated… just got some test results back. Looks like my thyroid is outta whack again. No wonder I’ve gained a bunch of weight lately. sighs.

Plunkybug 12 years ago

I’ve gained some lately too, and I have always been borderline, so I wonder if I should get tested again.

Rachel J 12 years ago

Sorry about the thyroid results. Hopefully with the right med, it will be a simple matter to get it under control.

Indigobloom 12 years ago

Definitely get tested!! better to know than be unsure :)

Indigobloom 12 years ago

Rachel, unfortunately my results don’t justify any medication, as it isn’t enough to affect my heart… only my weight heh

CHAroma 12 years ago

Really, no medication? That sucks. Maybe get a second opinion?

Indigobloom 12 years ago

This was based on my GP as well as the Specialist he sent me to. Industry standard is for them to treat me when it gets just a little bit worse than where I am now grumbles

teataku 12 years ago

Yeah, I’m with CHAroma. Weight gain can affect your heart, even if your thyroid isn’t. :/

Plunkybug 12 years ago

I have had it tested a few times in the last year and both times was borderline, though the last time was less borderline.

Indigobloom 12 years ago

teataku, oh I was just whining. Only gained about ten pounds. Doc says I need to gain another ten before they worry lol

Heather, I went to a naturopath managing that for two years, I was managing it for awhile but didn’t have benefits coverage and now am unemployed. Bah! Diet is paramount. Are you gluten free?

Terri HarpLady 12 years ago

One of my adult students was on thyroid meds for years. He doc put her on a paleo type program a few years ago – no grains, beans, dairy, sweets. She’s lost 85# or maybe more now, looks & feels great, & was able to get off the thyroid meds.

Fjellrev 12 years ago

Oh no, I’m so sorry about the results! My mom’s been battling with hyper- and now hypothyroidism all her life and it’s so serious. I hope everything will be ok.

I need to get tested too. It’s nearly impossible for me to lose weight no matter what I do.

Plunkybug 12 years ago

My weight seems to yo yo about 20 or so pounds every few years. I don’t do anything differently. I slowly lose it over the course of a year and it stays down, and then after a few it comes back, and then it goes down, and so forth. My bra collection has 3 cup sizes because they change before the bra is ready to toss, and I know I have a chance of fitting it again if I just wait. Not that I like having blood drawn, but I wonder if I should be getting tested once a year or every 6 months, just to keep an eye on it. Last testing was a little under a year ago when I had a noticeable change in my period flow. That plus the weight thing led me to blood work on thyroid and LSH/FSH hormone levels. And no, I am not GF, though I have considered it, but I have a very picky and cheap husband, and I am not sure I would be able to do it. I was also tested for Celiac Disease and it came back negative.

Indigobloom 12 years ago

Terri, I would so love to do a diet like that, or atleast something similar. In my house that wouldn’t work. I can’t wait to move out heh.
INcendiare, thanks! I think the most awful part, asides from the weight gain is the mood swings and depression. I have some really low days, and I really don’t wanna treat a symptom of a manageable condition with other meds so I just deal with it as best I can!

Indigobloom 12 years ago

Heather, mine does the same thing! only I work hard at losing the weight, and then my circumstances change so that I can’t maintain those habits anymore so I gain it all back, and then some. Bah. It will get better eventually, I hope. Once I get the diet under control!

Eh. Kittenna, I’m with you on this one. Anybody want this?

The flavour is pretty typical genmaicha- buttery and rich. There’s a bit more sweetness than usual but I can’t say this tastes like s’mores, except maybe in the finish/lingering aftertaste transition- I get a bit of burnt marshmallows. Actually, that last part is extremely cool and I’m impressed.

Still, this tea smells “sanitized” and that rubs me the wrong way. The family was over for a birthday and they all had a good laugh at the expense of me and this tea. Mother said it tasted like wood and other unpleasant things. I guess I won’t be able to pass this one off onto any of them.

I wish I was on board with everyone else who thinks this is awesome. :/

I’d be up for trying a cup if that would be ok with you. Since I’ve been quite busy, maybe we could meet up on campus on/after exams since i missed out on the meetup? Just let me know if there is anything of mine that you would like to try.

Crowkettle 12 years ago

I think I found someone who wants all of this but I’ll put a cup’s amount aside! We can swap other teas but I’d consider this sample as a freebie. You’re doing me a favor by taking any amount of this tea.

Fjellrev 12 years ago

Nah, you don’t have to bother then! I’m glad you found someone who wants it. It’ll be more work for you and I’m no THAT keen on trying it.

Crowkettle 12 years ago

Ok! Thank you for offering to take some though. It means a lot.. :P

Kittenna 12 years ago

CrowKettle – I’m wondering if there’s something going on with an ingredient that’s only detectable by some people… like that strip of paper that tastes awful to some people and like nothing to others. Either way, I’m swapping out my package too. Better that people try my unwanted stuff instead of spending money to get their own and disliking it (although if they like it, great!) On that note, Incendiare, I commented on your Professor Grey post ;)

Ze_Teamaker 12 years ago

Did you add sugar to it? I noticed that the flavors come out more when I add sugar; other wise it taste like what you described above. Also the main thing I have against this blend is the sanitized smell in the bag.

Sil 12 years ago

Ugh yeah the smell is just wrong

Daisy Chubb 12 years ago

Oh man I was sad I missed out on this one – better hop on the next swap wagon to be safe ;)

TeaLady441 12 years ago

:| Hmm, I don’t notice anything ‘sanitized’ like others have said, but I’m not really getting much from the tea except genmaicha. I haven’t reviewed it because some people say to let 52Teas sit a bit, but I’m not wowed by this one at all so far. So weird!

Crowkettle 12 years ago

Thank you for the suggestion, Ze_Teamaker! I tried a cup with sugar and it did improve it a little. Still not a keeper though.

I was also wondering about that too, Kittenna. I think it may be the smell that triggers it for me more than the taste. I have Marshmallow Treat reblend and it’s ok so far, so maybe it’s the cocoa nibs?

Nicole 12 years ago

All these reviews of S’mores tea… I think a Peep or two may need to be sacrificed in the microwave soon for a real s’more… :)

Ze_Teamaker 12 years ago

@CrowKettle: I think I have heard of aspartame being detectable by some people, but not others. I also think it is the chocolate flavoring Frank uses; not the nibs. Others Have commented on the smell of the chocolate flavoring in his teas before smelling weird. Personally I would like it more if it was only the nibs that added flavoring, even if it meant cutting it down to 1.75oz.

Crowkettle 12 years ago

@Ze_Teamaker, that makes more sense. I don’t think I’ve tried many 52blends that use the chocolate flavouring. Do you know if Double Chocolate Decadence used it?

All of this makes me want real s’mores too, Nicole. XD

Ze_Teamaker 12 years ago

Not sure, but a few people mention that it smelled like acholic chocolate liquor.

Kittenna 12 years ago

I’ve only had this strange/gross problem with Chocolate Malt HB, S’mores Genmaicha, and Browncoat Genmaicha. I wasn’t a big fan of Double Chocolate Decadence, but that was just because I didn’t find it chocolatey enough, not because of off flavours, and I’ve liked his chocolatey blends before. I think there’s something wrong with the nibs. I think I will email him about it… although I imagine he has been reading this as well…

jessiwrites 12 years ago

I put it in my dark closet, and now EVERYTHING I OWN smells like S’mores Genmaicha.

Sil 12 years ago

LOL that mental imagine makes me laugh… i needed that

Kittenna 12 years ago

Ahaha that’s hilarious. My four open teas are on my dresser. If my room smells like various flavoured genmaicha and/or chlorine, I wouldn’t know because I can’t taste/smell anything anymore, blah. Hopefully it won’t be a nasty surprise when my senses return.

Indigobloom 12 years ago

With the s’mores, I didn’t notice it nearly as much. I wonder if that is because I got mine in the baggie, and had it out for a few days before putting it away properly!

Crowkettle 12 years ago

I’m airing out my packets of marshmallow treat, although I don’t find this one as bad as bcg or s’mores. The room smells sweet. :)

Kittenna 12 years ago

Indigobloom – that could be! Didn’t think of that.

CrowKettle – Yes, my packet of Marshmallow Treat is open as well (even though it wasn’t as bad), alongside Browncoat Genmaicha, S’mores, and Chocolate Malt HB.

Indigobloom 12 years ago

I’m really hoping that this works. I need my marshmallow treat to work!! (when i run out and need a reblend that is haha)

Mmmm, genmaicha.

I don’t like this one as much as Marshmallow Treat, but it is still super tasty. I love how the toasty genmaicha works with the cacao and marshmallow root, it’s kind of perfect for s’mores. The sweetness is nice, too… it’s there, but it’s not overwhelming. Such a calming tea, I am so glad I got to order this.

Why isn’t it as good as marshmallow treat?

I think it’s a personal preference, I am not as much a fan of chocolate. I love the Marshmallow Treat!

Last time I drank this I rated it 70 – that was MONTHS ago. Either my tastes have changes or this is a different batch, but I’m doing much better with this tonight.
Chocolatey, smokey, genmaicha – not really getting the marshmallow or the graham cracker. Even with that, this is making me happy tonight. Upping the rating a bit (still doesn’t get full marks re missing elements…)

I think drinking more straight teas is helping me appreciate the more subtle flavors in things like this. When I started, I wanted in your face flavors – I can handle more subtle now.

I didn’t even know what pu’erh was 8 months ago….

OMGsrsly 11 years ago

LOL. Apparently I only posted part of a note from my phone. :) Tea drinking is an evolution in taste. I still like a lot of strongly flavoured teas, but I have more appreciation for a lot of plain teas I never would have tried before. Steepster has definitely helped me open my eyes. :)

Bleh. So, I’m torn as to whether my issue is with the genmaicha, or 52teas’ cacao nibs/chocolate flavouring, which must have changed, because I’ve never previously had problems. This packet had the same “off” smell as Browncoat Genmaicha and Marshmallow Treat, although it was definitely more similar to BG. It’s almost a chloriney aroma, and it’s really offputting to me (and I don’t quite get how nobody else is picking up on such things :/)

So, brewed up, yeah, this one still has the off aroma. And the flavour? Bleh, I’m actually really not much enjoying this. I can’t breathe in while the cup is near my nose, otherwise I gag a bit, and there’s a bitterness in the flavour that’s not working for me (and my brewing parameters should be just fine). I can taste the chocolate… ish… but there’s a chemically flavour, and I can’t taste the genmaicha, or any lapsang souchong whatsoever. I am honestly completely confused as to why I seem to be the only person disliking these blends, when I know I love Marshmallow Treat, and I previously have tried Cherry Cheesecake Genmaicha, which was also delicious. I have Chocolate Malt Honeybush on standby as well, because it also has a really off aroma (which is why I’m uncertain as to whether it’s the cacao nibs/chocolate flavouring or the genmaicha… or both).

So, this is better than Browncoat Genmaicha, but… I really do not like it, which really, really sucks. I guess I’ll try it again later…. and then maybe swap it away to all you Steepsters who seem to enjoy it.

ETA: Opened up my package today to let it air out a bit, as was recommended. I am no longer smelling the chloriney smell (although I am sick, so take that with a grain of salt), and therefore it does smell somewhat appetizing to me. I will leave it to sit open overnight and perhaps give it a shot tomorrow. I need to dig out my package of Browncoat Genmaicha and try the same thing, because it was definitely worse. (Marshmallow Treat Genmaicha and Chocolate Malt HB will be getting the same treatment).

I didn’t care for the cacao flavor so much, either, but still overall enjoyed the tea. I way prefer Marshmallow Treat, though.

Kittenna 12 years ago

I definitely did not enjoy it. It was better than Browncoat, but I still feel nauseated from having drank most of it.

Sil 12 years ago

Hmmm ill try at his sooner rather than later.

Stephanie 12 years ago

At least you’ll have an easy time swapping it out since everyone is after this tea! :/

Kittenna 12 years ago

Yep, that is true! Sometimes being the only dissenter does have its perks :)

Indigobloom 12 years ago

Hmmm, I just tried the MT and it was amazing. Might be the cacao, since I get that note from the browncoat as well

Kittenna 12 years ago

Yeah, the MT was ok, thankfully. Not quite the same, but I’m not overly concerned. S’mores and Browncoat, though…

Indigobloom 12 years ago

Just had my second steep. Getting a hint of that chemical taste now :(

CHAroma 12 years ago

Apparently it’s Girl Scout Cookie season! I honestly don’t keep track of these things but my parents always get me a box of Tagalongs (which are the best Girl Scout cookies for sure!). I eat two or three a night and keep them for as long as possible. They’re so yummy!

So what does that have o do with tea? Well, this tea smells JUST like a Tagalong. If you blindfolded me and stuck this under my nose I would think for sure it was a cookie. A fresh cookie! Imagine how amazing a Tagalong would be fresh out of the oven. Mmmm.

It doesn’t really taste like a Tagalong, which is a good thing. I love genmaicha, I love flavored genmaichas, but I don’t like them heavily flavored. This is essentially Marshmallow Treat (which I adore) with dark chocolate added. So, yes, it’s amazing! The cocoa nibs are fantastic, dark rich chocolate without being sweet or icky fake. The marshmallow is, of course, fantastic.

I drank this hot—I have surprisingly never tried Marshmallow Treat hot, always iced, but s’mores are supposed to be hot so of course I had to try it out that way first. I’ll be cold brewing the leaves tonight though!

This note was kind of all over the place, huh? But in closing—I love it! Marshmallow and chocolate and genmaicha, oh my!

This tea has grown on me. On it’s own it’s just ok. But my new trick is to add 10 (yes 10) mini marshmallows to my mug before pouring the tea in. Adds a little more gooeyness, which makes this a pretty yummy cup. Not as healthy as I’d like, but I’m cool with that.

So I’m nearly halfway through my package and am now finally ready to review it. I’m pretty much disappointed with this. Browncoat Genmaicha was really good, with a bit of chocolate, and I thought this would be the same x3. But it’s pretty boring. It mostly tastes like genmaicha, which I haven’t had much experience with. Maybe I should make my DTT S’mores…

Sad Cavocorax is sad.

I would swap it, but I just sent a lot in the mail…
