From DAVIDsTEA

As good as it gets

It was three o’clock in the afternoon on a rainy Friday. David was hungry. He needed a nap, a shave, and a hot meal. What he had was a kettle, a pack of matches, and a bag of black tea. So he grabbed some ingredients and threw them in the water. Chocolate, cinnamon, coconut, vanilla – this drink was a real piece of work. He lifted his cup, took a drink and then another. It was hotter than an inferno and smoother than silk. It was good. Almost too good.

Ingredients: Organic: Black tea, chocolate, cinnamon, coconut, vanilla. With natural vanilla flavouring*.

Allergens: Dairy and coconut

1.5 tsp for 300mL water @100C, steeped four minutes, drunk bare.

Eehhrrr …

The scent reminds me of Super Chocolate. Lots of good cinnamon. The liquor is cloudy and gritty, with globs of fat on the surface from the chocolate and coconut. Visually, this is not appealing at all. Mouthfeel is very smooth, thanks to the melted chocolate, and the cinnamon, clove, and chipotle chile give a pleasant bite. I cannot taste vanilla, or chocolate, or coconut. I pick up some weak back tea. I want to like this, and at my first sip I wanted to spit it out, but I can’t make up my mind. I might appreciate this more on a cold day.

Wow cinnamon. I couldn’t smell it dry but it’s all I can smell steeped. Just waiting on this tea to cool before I taste it.

Hmm. I’m not really loving it. Must be the hot cinnamon. I really don’t think I’ve ever had a tea with cinnamon in it before – even when they try to sprinkle it on top at tea shops I ask that they don’t. That must be what’s throwing me off with this one. I can perhaps taste a slight hint of vanilla but other than that it’s just cinnamon.

I don’t really know how milk would go with this one. Or if I would be better iced. I’ll leave a rating once I’ve given it another try.

Drinking a few cups of this tonight (thanks to lovelylotus) and am quite content for the moment. I love how this tea is easy to relax into, and just tastes so
warm and cozy. I will however , mention two details which are leaving a bit to be desired with this tea tonight. Firstly, there is an oily sheen to the top of the cup (I’m guessing from the chocolate) I love chocolate in tea, but seriously, not at the expense of feeling like I’m drinking a cup of oily sludge. Ew. (I added cream to my first cup and that helped solve the issue but for people who want to drink this straight, the oily sheen looks terribly unnappetizing. Also, aside from the cinnamon notes, I can’t taste much else. (Maybe I steeped this not long enough??) This is turning out to be kind of a watered down, murky, cinnamon-y drink tonight. Not the worst tea atrocity I’ve encountered, but it is still disappointing. I am feeling cautious about letting this become a permanent tea in my collection. Bummer. I really wanted this to be as good as I had remembered it.

Just finished my bag of this. I really like this tea, but I think I’m going to try a few more different blends of chocolate teas before rebuying. I added milk and sugar to this and it tasted just like hot chocolate! Exactly what I was looking for tonight.

One of my coworkers was nice enough to pick some of this up for me when I gave him some samples of the kinds I already had! I was really excited to try it, and it’s good, but not great. It looks kind of like … black tea with coconut … but someone threw some clodhoppers or other chocolate candy in the bag and they smushed together. It doesn’t smell bad, but I am not sure I would have added cinnamon to this blend. I think that if anything it is distracting and seems to muddle things up.

I made this as a latte with a tiny bit of vanilla agave (seriously, I’m trying to stretch it out as long as possible). It looked kind of gross in the cup – lots of loose bits of chocolate floating to the top – my latte foam ended up speckled. Taste-wise it reminded me of a macaroon or spider cookie. Sadly the big thing that it was lacking in taste was tea – it just tasted like spider cookie warm chocolate milk. I’m sure I’ll finish the bag, but I don’t think I’ll buy more.

I get really excited when I’m a first to review a tea. :) I must be one of the biggest tea nerds on the planet.

You know that saying “it’s worth its weight in gold”? Well… this tea is worth its weight in CHOCOLATE. Holy moly. This tea is a cup of hot chocolate, but without the calories. It is winter, come early. Ice skating and mittens included.

I took a to-go from the store, in the form of a delicious latte, but I wish I would have bought a tin of it. And when I say a tin, I mean one of the big tins they keep on the wall. This tea is ah-mazing.

I usually greatly dislike anything with coconut in it, but I actually couldn’t taste it. The balance between the cinnamon and the chocolate was perfect. Given the caffeine though, I don’t know if I would drink this at night haha!

Had this one to go while i was downtown yesterday! The lady asked if i wanted milk and i said yes. She put about half a cup of milk in it. Next time I will say no…
Anyway, it was a cold cloudy day, so this was just what i needed.
Fabulously delicious and creamy. I may have to get some of this later on this year! Awesome!

I bought this tea prepackaged as a discount 2 for $5. I like these little sales. I was able to get this one and Mamma Mia for $5. Okay onto the tea, confused about this one… it does not really smell like anything. It has a cinnamon taste without being overbearing. I can also taste some chocolate. I guess it tastes a bit like a water down version of a hot cocoa. As it cools I was surprised to taste the coconut. It is okay, but I will not be buying more of this tea, and I am really happy I only paid $2.50 for it.

Tealizzy

How long did you steep it for? It’s good with milk and sugar. :)

Gabriela

I just had it black, will try the sugar and milk… Thanks for suggesting that.

I was really excited about Stormy Night, but it’s really disappointed me. It took a few tries for me to brew a strong enough cup that I can really get a sense of the flavors. For me, its dominant flavor is cinnamon, with a chocolate undernote. Not terrible, just blah, but I can get more satisfying cinnamon teas for much cheaper elsewhere. It also gives me heartburn every time I try it.

Something in the tea—the chocolate, I imagine—leaves oily residue on the surface of the tea, which is really unappetizing. This won’t be a re-buy for me.
