Stormy Night (Organic)

I was going to reward myself with Pumpkin Chai (with brown sugar and cream), but thought I’d give this one another shot. With chocolate, coconut, cinnamon etc I just feel that this SHOULD be an awesome tea. Yet, it disappoints again.

It’s still good. It’s almost like a hot chocolate with cinnamon in it. With the cream in it, it’s not as weak as I remember, but it’s just not amaaaaaazing. And not something I need to repurchase. The good news is that my tin is down to the “D” – I’m getting that much closer to filling it up with Cookie Dough or something else!

EDIT: As I sip away at it further I find I’m liking this one more and more. SO CONFUSING. But I’ll keep the lower rating b/c it’s not one that I"m consistently wowed by. :P

I had to toss some mini chocolate chips into my tin because I ate most of the chocolate chunks out of it…They’re like pieces of mini toblerone, and I LOVE toblerone!!!

I definitely prefer SN to Super Chocolate, I’m not a huge fan of cinnamon and green tea, and find Super Chocolate to bee too strong. I gave what I had of it to a friend who loves it.

As much as I like it, I feel like it would be better with an oolong base. I actually drink it exclusively blended with Spiced Carob/Dr Chocolate to get the oolong component I feel it’s missing. The sweetness of the coconut and vanilla balance out the bite of the cardamom in the Dr Chocolate, which in turn lets me enjoy it more as I’m not a huge fan of cardamom.

Because I really don’t drink it on its own, I don’t feel like it’s fair to give it a rating. It’s a great tea, but I kind of wish it would have been an oolong and replaced Dr Chocolate/Spiced Carob.

The dry leaf has big chunks of chocolate and lots of coconut, but not a lot of tea. It smells strongly of cinnamon and chocolate with a touch of coconut. It brews to an aged oak brown.

The taste does not live up to the smell, it tastes thin and watery. The cinnamon is still strong. The chocolate has melted leaving a film on the top of the tea and it adds a sweet flavour, but it tastes a little stale and waxy at this point (I bought this tea before christmas). Perhaps this flavour is the result of the cross between the coconut and the chocolate. There is a hint of vanilla. Aspects of the flavour remind me of Ovaltine. The base is well hidden but may be contributing to the sweetness of the tea and be contributing a hint of bitterness. The cinnamon has toned down since I first bought this. I think I prefer it’s intensity now then when fresh. This tea actually tastes better than I remember it tasting, before I had to cut it with a yunnan in order to be able to drink it, but it still tastes very thin. I think it needs a larger percentage of actually tea in this blend to support the flavouring. As it is I am unlikely to repurchase this.

I’ve finally gotten around to trying this! Bought a Tea of the Month pack a few weeks back for one reason: it smells just like these amazing cinnamon rolls that a shop by my place used to sell. Right down to the icing. That’s it. Sometimes it’s a bit more chocolate-y, but, well, that’s not a problem for me. And, I’ll be honest: it even tastes like them a bit. I thought it was a long shot, because smelling AND tasting like my favourite cinnamon rolls? Too much to ask. But it actually does.

The assistant who helped me when I bought this said that it was a great alternative to hot chocolate, to which I thought: hah, ‘alternative’.

One thing I definitely would have done is brew this stronger. I used about 1 and a half teaspoons in one of my larger pots, about 2.5 cups, because I tend to be careful when brewing new black teas for the first time, but I would definitely recommend both steeping a bit longer and using more tea to get the sweetness and flavour from the chocolate bits, cinnamon, and everything else to their full strengths.

In terms of a creamer, I tried it with some vanilla soy milk and it was quite nice, but I think this tea deserves full dairy, at least 2% milk or Half & Half. The extra vanilla didn’t add much, but a chocolate flavoured non-dairy might be better. I imagine almond milk would also do very nicely with it. But for me, especially since it’s such a sweet and decadent tea by itself, I think going the full way with a creamer would definitely be called for.

I sweetened it with both honey and brown sugar and brown sugar was definitely better. The honey didn’t add sweetness so much as its own flavour, and I wasn’t particularly fond of the result when mixed with the tea. Your mileage may vary, I suppose, but definitely a sugar for me if I even do want this sweetend.

All in all, it’s a decent tea, and something very good for the fall and winter, but I haven’t fallen in love with it. The liquor is very dark, obviously, but there’s also a very definite oily sheen to it. I’ve noticed this in a few other blends from David’s, like their Blood Orange Pu’erh, but particularly with their teas that have flavouring added, whether it’s natural or artificial. Some might not appreciate seeing that in their cup.

All in all, it’s a warm, winter tea; not for icing, not something I’ll be stocking up on regularly, but I’ll enjoy it while I have it.

Dry leaves: in the bag all i can smell is the vanilla extract. once i let them sit in the cup a while and breathe i can pick up the chocolate and cinnamon

steeping: nice reddish brown color and a lovely oil slick there at the top, mmm this is gonna be good lol. smells like cinnamon oatmeal with a hint of chocolate

time to taste: not too sweet, nice cinnamon flavor, the chocolate gives it a nice richness and the vanilla rounds it out very nicely.

I like it!

Thin-tasting, overall. Bitter chocolatey taste near the end of the sip. Cinnamon present. Black tea is difficult to detect.

DavidsTea currently has a promotion to get 50g of Stormy Night. I love trying new teas, so I jumped at the chance. I mean, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and coconut? Sounds like heaven.

Dry: It smells like rum. I don’t really understand why. Perhaps it’s the coconut that’s making me think of Malibu?

Yup, it tastes like rum too. With the slightest, slightest tinge of chocolate. I have to admit it’s a very smooth and pleasant tea, but nothing as I was expecting.

When I first tried this tea I hated it. I was disappointed and ignroed it for months. Then one day, after being encouraged by a friend, I tried it with TWO perfect spoonfuls of leaves and a lot of agave.
WOW. It’s dark chocolate and spicy cinnamon and just a hint of coconutty vanilla.
Forget Read My Lips, THIS is the perfect chocolate tea. If you’ve had it before and disliked, or weren’t enthused, and you like chocolate, please, double the leaves, sweeten it liberally and try it again. Don’t overlook this hidden gem in the DT Collection

Thanks jeweledthumb for this tea. If I remember correctly, this tea tastes very similar to Wegman’s Chocolate Chai. Unfortunately, I can’t compare the two since I’ve been out of the Chocolate Chai for a while now. This is a very smooth, very chocolatey drink with a just right taste of coconut and a subtle hint of cinnamon and vanilla. Would definitely be a good drink on a stormy night ;)

Got a sample in my last Davids Tea order. For no other reason than laziness this afternoon I decided to brew this sample. It was sitting right there on the counter so….
It smells really really good. Dry and brewed. Sipping on it and I’m pretty surprised at how rich and dark it is. I had Glitter and Gold last night and these two are like completely different animals…mostly just based on the heft of it. Glitter and Gold was really light and sweet with cinnamon and spice…This is dark and heavy with spice..a little chocolate. Not getting so much coconut…but I placed the cup down on the coffee table next to my daughter who is 4 and she said…“what smells like a nutty coconut?”
It is dark and we….stormy…but it’s really good. It isn’t bitter at all and barely any detectable astringency if any. I’m tempted to add a little milk but not sugar…

Anyway it’s a pretty good brew…Probably better for a morning cup..it’s stout. But really good all the same.
