From DAVIDsTEA

Sweet indulgence

There’s no better treat than a salted caramel. You won’t find this in your history books, but we’ve heard that Romeo seduced Juliet with a salt-sprinkled toffee. Rich, buttery and sweet with a kiss of salt – who can resist? So it goes without saying that it makes for a seriously delicious tea. This is a rich black tea blend, strewn with pieces of English toffee, coconut, caramel and a touch of French sea salt. It’s guaranteed to seduce your taste buds.

Ingredients: Black tea, coconut, caramel bits, English toffee bits, sea salt, natural and artificial flavouring*.

Allergens: soy, coconut, dairy, nuts

Saturday! I’m not working you for once!

To celebrate I bought plane tickets to Hawaii. Those are expensive – but our vacation there is in September and I finally got a pretty good deal on them. I wish we could go now!

But, since I can’t, and it’s raining, I picked this tea to enjoy. I looooove salted caramel. Salted caramel tea, gluten free donuts, and a lazy weekend. And plenty of books to read – I just finished “The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells” by Andrew Sean Greer and it was one of the best stories I’ve read in a long time. If you have any recommendations for me, I’d love to hear them!

EDIT: Um, and for the tea review – this actually tastes really caramelly today, but I added 3 tsp. leaf to the 500 ml water in my Breville. Normally I have this as a hot chocolate because that was the only way I got a noticeable caramel flavor, but I must have been underleafing before. Still not so much the salt, but the caramel is lovely and accentuated nicely with a bit of milk. One of the best cups of this I’ve had so far!

I definitely recommend Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. It really gives an interesting, alternate look at the traditional story.

gmathis

There’s a “what have you read” thread that floats up to the top of the string every so often—you can find lots of reading ideas there.

greenteafairy

I’d recommend Wolf Hall if you haven’t read it – I’m about halfway through at the moment, and it’s the best thing I’ve read in a while.

Fjellrev

Hawaii! That’s awesome.

I ♥ NewYorkCiTEA

I will ditto both of the above. Plus 11/22/63. I brought it for my mom and read a few pages just to see what it was like and I’ve been flying through it.

TeaLady441

Great recs – thanks! I’m adding to my wishlist right now. The Impossible Lives of Greta Wells sounds intriguing, although I hope it’s better than Life After Life. I got bored with that one.

Yummmmmmm. I still like this one, yes yes I do. Burnt caramel deliciousness. My stomach’s grumping a bit right now about how all it’s getting is flavoured water when it really wants something with substance, so that’s affecting my enjoyment of this tea, but I do so love the flavour. Thanks to Sil’s pregnant friend for letting me have some more of this :D

The scene- my kitchen.
The players- Me, and DAVIDs Salted Caramel tea.
(a kettle whistles, ROSEHIPS picks it off the burner, scalds a yellow tea pot, and then steeps a basket of Salted Caramel tea)
Me: Alright, set the timer.
(she sets a timer, and wanders around aimlessly until it dings. She removes the steeper basket, managing not to burn her fingertips. Much. Sits down with the yellow tea pot, and a polka dot cup)
Me: Alright tea, lets do this.
(She sips. She frowns, and takes another sip. Puzzlement.
Me: Why is this never quite what I expected it to be? Wherefor art thou, salt? At least thou art devoid of coffee flavor today.
(The tea says nothing, only sits and lets off steam. Rosehips picks up her cup again)
Me: Well, try try again.
(end scene)

So, this Salted Caramel chocolate bar? Fabulous. I can see the granules of fleur de sel in the bar, and that caramel really pops through. It’s on the sweet side, to be honest, as it burns the back of the throat a little bit, but that’s why it’s wonderful in small quantities. Would I get more? Hell yeah, but I should behave and not do so for a while. Let’s hope they’ll keep this one around for a little longer.

Ost

I wish that they sold their chocolate bars online. :(

TeaBrat

I like this one too!

Fjellrev

They ought to step it up and start selling them online already!

My classes start today at noon, and my textbooks arrived today at around 11 from Amazon, What great luck! I decided to grab this black tea today, as I got up a little earlier and I’m sure I will drink a full pot of it before my caffeine cut off time.

I love the caramel taste in this tea, but I’m not sure if I can taste the saltiness. The finish on the sip isn’t that typical sweetness that I associate with caramel, but more of a dryness that might be associated with salt. So maybe that’s where the salt comes in for me? That might be a stretch. Overall this is a nice tea, not something I would need stocked year round, but certainly one that I would pick up in a sample size in Fall and Winter, for when I am craving these types of dessert teas the most.

Off to school for me…well, online school that is.

Tamm

Good luck with classes! Lucky you with the books, I still have no idea what I’m supposed to have yet and mine start tomorrow!

Courtney

School began at 8am for me blah. I can’t believe it’s begun again already! Good luck with your classes :)

Tamm

8am is far too early for class! Is it cold where you are? Mornings here have been terrible. Thank you!

Courtney

Yep I’m in Calgary agh. Frigid usually. And it’s 8am all term M-Th. I wonder what I was thinking haha!

Tamm

Ouch! Four days too! I only have to be there Tues/Thurs so at least it is only then. I had a 8am class last spring and I can remember almost falling up the stairs on the ice!

canadianadia

@Tamm – I hope you are able to get your books without any frustrations. In the past I remember standing in line for hours to get into the university bookstore just to find out that the books I needed were out of stock. Thankfully my school’s bookstore has evolved from this to provide students with the book-list earlier so that we can order them in advance. Good luck with your classes also.

@Courtney – oh man! 8am in cold Calgary weather – 4 days a week! YIKES! Hope the elements cooperate with you. Good luck with your studies also.

Backlog: I’m done with this one. It was an interesting experiment, but it was also so damn difficult to make this one pop they way I’d like.

Rosehips

Yes! My assessment exactly.

VariaTEA

I tried this and it was not very good so I gave up trying and gave it away. Any tea you really need to work at to be tasty is not worth repurchasing IMHO.

TeaLady441

I agree! I’m not a fan of fussy teas. The payoff had better be phenomenal.

Roswell Strange

I had issues with this one at first because it is finicky – but I’ve figured out that it’s much better with a short steep time (like, three minutes), at least imho. Don’t know if you’ve both tried that, but maybe food (or tea) for thought?

TeaLady441

I did, but the results just weren’t consistent for me.
No biggie. I had 30g to play with, and now I can move on to the next tea!

Plunkybug

Hmmm, I might need to play with my sample some more.

The dry leaf aroma = ecstasty! O-M-G! Seriously, this is what ecstasy smells like. It’s not good, it’s not fantastic, it’s ecstasy! In layman’s terms, it smells like caramel hot off the stove. Mmm, caramel toffee with a bit of sea salt. I can totally get that from the aroma. Oh, I can’t wait to brew this up!!

The package of my sample says to steep this for 4-7 minutes. Seven minutes is a little long for a first steep, so I’m going with 4 minutes. Wow, the aroma of the brewed tea is exactly like the dry leaf! It also brewed up really dark and opaque. Ah, my mouth is watering! I just want to drink this right now!!! The whole room has been flooded by this tea’s aroma. My fiancé even asked if I was making food, haha! Why can’t you just cool off faster?!!

Finally, it’s not too hot to sip and it is LEGEN-wait for it-DARY!!!!! AHHHHH!!!! THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!! It doesn’t even need milk or sugar! I can drink this straight! Wow!!! I can’t believe how extraordinary this is!! Like eating a caramel toffee and then drinking a great black tea! Oh so sweet and delicious! If it were Christmas, I’d call this a Christmas miracle!

I didn’t actually see coconut flakes in the blend nor do I smell or taste it. If coconut’s in there, it must be toasted coconut flakes because everything in the dry leaf mix is brown or golden. Nor is the salt individually identifiable. I think the coconut and salt in this tea just contribute to the overall rich, buttery, awesome flavor.

Even the aftertaste is ecstasy! There’s no astringency and maybe just the tiniest hint of bitterness as it begins to cool. But I’m very sensitive to bitterness, so I don’t think most people would notice this. And honestly, it doesn’t bother me in the least. Second steep for 8 minutes, and this time I added skim milk and Truvia right away. Now it’s a much sweeter caramel tea and much more liquid candy-like. But just like with Love Tea #7, the first cup is my favorite.

This is just the perfect caramel tea! This is what I wanted the caramel tea from ESP Emporium I recently purchased to be. Perfection!! Right here! In my cup! Yesss!!!

I feel like so many new teas I’ve tried have been getting extremely high ratings from me lately. But this tea truly does deserve it. DAVIDsTEA is quickly becoming my new favorite tea company! Everything I’ve tried is a hit! These people know what they’re doing! I’m definitely going to have to order more of this when my sample is gone!

Oh wow, I can’t wait to try this one!

Azzrian

Damn I want some of this and by the way you cracked me up! “LEGEN-wait for it-DARY!!!!!” I just finished my marathon watching this and now I want to know WHO IS BARNEY MARRYING???? I don’t have access to the last season yet Ugggggggggggggg

CHAroma

Seriously! I have no idea either.

Mercuryhime

I love Barney! And yeah, his future wife is such a mystery!

Hesper June

Well,I saw the last show, and it is certainly strongly suggested of who she is…

Azzrian

I heard about this HOWEVER you know how this show is – she could be marrying someone else. SIGH I can’t wait. I am that person who wants all her gifts before the holiday lol

CHAroma

Spoiler alert, Hesper June! Hahaha, let us be surprised!

Hesper June

I know, thats why I didn’t say it yet;)

Azzrian

It’s the old lady in the window he slept with that night he had to hit 200.

Azzrian

Ugg my daughter corrected me – that was not the same episode…my joke failed!!! LOL

Hesper June

Oh My Gosh! You are so funny:)

Azzrian

Yes because I am AWESOME! Some would even say … LEGEN… wait for it… DARY! Seriously though I can’t wait for the last season to come out on DVD or netflix. SIGH

Hesper June

The Awesome Azziran! That is what I shall call you from now on…

Azzrian

And THAT is AWESOME lol

CHAroma

Barney is funny, but Marshall is definitely my favorite character. I just love him! XD

Azzrian

He really is a sweetie – the kind of guy anyone wants their daughter to marry.

Hesper June

Yes, I like Marshall too.
I have family from Minnesota, so I always crack up at the Midwestern references they make (like the Mayo, Gummy Bear Potato Chip Salad;)
Plus, Lily and Marshall are such a cute couple!

Azzrian

Hesper really? NO! Do Minnesotans really eat stuff like that? LOL

Hesper June

Well, its greatly exaggerated but there are some interesting casseroles I have partook in.
And, just so you understand my family…My Minnesotan Grandmother calls Hamburger Helper a “snack” food!

CHAroma

Hahahahahaaa!! That’s hilarious!

Azzrian

Hahha! Awesome!
Well I make a salad some say is odd but I think it is normal.
Apples, Cheddar cheese and mayo. (there are spices too)
Is that odd?

CHAroma

I don’t know, but I just had Swiss cheese fondue last night and dipped Granny Smith apples in it. OMG!! Sooooo good!

Hesper June

No,Azziran, that sounds yummy!
But, then again look at my heritage;)
Yes, Charoma, if you go to her house, her exact words would be “Oh, well, it is gonna be an hour or two till Supper, But I will whip you up a Hamburger Helper to snack on”

Azzrian

LOL!! That is so cute Hesper! I want to visit your granny! :)
CHAroma and Hesper – glad it does not sound too bizarre. My daughter and I LOVE it.
Good lord I need to find food now.
Steepster break till later.

Kittenna

Damn, I didn’t send you Creamy Nut Oolong, so I can’t force you to compare the two. Grrrr. I need someone to back me up on how similar the flavour is! Also, the coconut appears to be finely chopped.

Haha guys, your convo is amusing! I have seen the last ep of season 7 and while it does seem to indicate who the bride is, I’m skeptical since they like to do a lot of misleading!! I’m sad though; I read that the eighth season may be the last. Either that or they continue to the tenth season (I don’t think this is a spoiler, but it sure looked like Ted had a kid in… 2015??)

CHAroma

I know the show is all about Ted and how he meets his future wife, but I honestly think he’s the least interesting/fun character.

Kittenna

Awww, I kind of have a crush on him! But I agree that the other characters/actors are fantastic and I love the Marshall/Lily storylines, etc.

I read my above message and realized that I clearly forgot my train of though to saying that last bit – I meant to say that at least we’ll soon find out who Ted’s future wife is, because if he has a kid in 2015, which one ep seemed to indicate, he’s gotta meet this woman prior… and there’s only three years left!

Azzrian

I think Ted being the least interesting has a purpose though – I mean the show is about him but really its about his life and experiences with the other more leading characters. Still you can’t help but love his romantic ways SIGH I have a crush on him too Kit – yes Kit that is what I am calling you. LOL

Kittenna

Hahahaha, I can handle Kit ;) I thought that at least if I kept a long-ish name that began with ‘K’, people maybe wouldn’t get quite as confused! I know someone else changed their name on here recently, and I was super thrown!

Azzrian

I probably have no idea who that is. I am not “with it” on those things.
You realize your photo by your posts is still the same right?

CHAroma

Azzrian, you have to clear your browser cache for the photo to change.

Azzrian

Oh okay – wait – what – the photo has changed now. Okay well ummmm I was going to clear chache but it changed anyway but yes that makes sense.

Yum, I’ve been craving this tea all week. Having it tonight to celebrate my guy being home from up north finally! Ahh I can finally relax :) this tea have a nice caramel flavor mixing with the black tea. I get a hint of salt in the aftertaste, which is nice. I enjoy this blend because it’s not a signature overly sugary DavidsTea dessert blend, it’s far more subtle and the base actually is present in the flavor. Light yet rich. Good for before bed and listening to zen music. Ugh, can’t believe it’s only Tuesday…can’t wait for the weekend, I just want to relax and drink tea and stay warm! See previous notes on this tea :)

Yvonne

This tea is just lovely :) Cures all my ooey gooey caramel cravings

mrs.stenhouse12

Nice, yes it’s hitting the sweet spot quite well right now, not overly sweet, which I am very much enjoying! I will probably stock up on a bit more of this, I only have enough left for about 1 more cup :(

Yvonne

Oh no :(

mrs.stenhouse12

Ah well, more room to try more teas, or restock! :D so much tea to try, and so little cupboard space lol

So, I’m currently watching an episode of Bones (the one that aired last night) called “Carrot in the Kudzu” and while typing the name of this blend into the search bar I typed in “Salted Carrot” and it took me an embarrassingly slow time to figure out why the search results were not yielding the correct type.

Also, my kitchen smells AMAZING; there are brownies going in the over and they just smell so divine! I had a thought while making them, though and I’d like to pose it to people here on Steepster: Do you think you could infuse cooking oil with tea through cold brewing it? And then, how concentrated do you think it would have to be to really affect the flavour of what you’re baking? I was considering making something like an “Earl Grey Brownie” or maybe something more caramel flavoured, like this blend perhaps.

Anyway; short steep time for this blend is key! And thankfully, I nailed it. There’s a lovely “burnt caramel/brown sugar” flavour along with the black tea and none of the massive amounts of bitterness that comes with this blend when you oversteep it. Also no salt – but I’m not complaining on that front.

The little “salt floaties” are maybe a bit annoying though; I can sort of feel their presence in the mouthfeel.

Daddyselephant

I’ve both infused tea in butter and made butter using tea-infused milk. I’ve made earl’s garden scones and such. Try looking up different ways of infusing pot into butter/oil, it’s the same principle. And here’s a link to my scones recipe: http://aislingoftea.wordpress.com/tag/zing-me-scones/

I don’t think you can infuse the flavor with a cold brew, but if you warm the oil and cook it for a bit, it might work?

I got my little birdie! He’s sitting in his cage all comfy while we listen to Lykke Li and I drink this. I already got him to get on my finger and eat some millet while I held it. He oddly seems more uncomfortable with the cage than me, so I broke that rule. I haven’t decided on a name yet because I can’t figure him out till he starts acting more like himself again.

But I am leaning towards Seb or Sebastian, though at this point he might be a Kimi.

So I haven’t had this tea for a bit, and I do love salted caramel so it was time for some again. It actually reminds me more of toffee than caramel. But it’s still got that burnt sugar type flavor. I definitely love it, it’s hard to get such a sweet, creamy flavor without adding milk or sugar. I added neither and it still tastes so good.

I really want a latte with this but unfortunately my small size saucepan got messed up by stupid candle wax. So when I go to buy my dear little bird a radio tomorrow, I will get one of them too and fix this want.

I just wish there was an easier way to add salt. I guess the latte might be the answer, especially if there was a caramel sauce on top…

Ninavampi

I saw the pic you posted. He is pretty!! I had one with my best friend and called him Yuki. He learned to make kissy noises and even to say his name! :)

tea-sipper

Maybe birdie misses their other bird friends from the pet shop? This tea sounds delicious!

momo

Yeah, he was pretty social when I was watching him yesterday. There was a yellow one he was good buddies with, but the last two times I’ve had two together, I never got to bond with any of them very well. When I was a kid I had one that bonded with me and I hope more for that…and maybe teaching him a few phrases!

Alphakitty

I’ve always wanted a bird for a pet! They have such sweet little faces. Sebastian is an awesome name too—makes him sound fancy.
