I won a Facebook contest with Della Terra Teas, winning a couple sample sizes of their teas. I chose this one, Dubbele Chocolade (DBC) because I love my chocolate teas and often feel a tea could use MORE CHOCOLATE!

DRY: Woodsy dark chocolate smell, yum!

STEEPED: bright tangy dark chocolate. Steeps up to a dark brown tea.

TASTE: Deep earthy, woodsy and smokey black tea base with strong dark chocolate taste. DBC’s chocolate flavor is similar to having 70% + chocolate bar as it is not very sweet of a tea on its own. No bitterness.
Adding rock sugar turned DBC turned the chocolate less strong and a more smooth chocolate taste.

WHO’D LOVE THIS TEA: Chocolate lovers and black tea drinkers. Coffee drinkers (come on, tea is better!).

COMMENTS: I don’t think there is way to pack more chocolate taste into this tea. DBC is very strong and packs a big chocolate punch – thus why I think a coffee drinker would enjoy this tea.
I don’t like adding sweetner/milk to my tea, but DBC was very good sweetened.

I’m thinking of cold steeping this bad boy into an iced chocolate tea drink, ohyeah! This tea would also make a killer latte! I must get some soy creamer! MUHAHAHHAAAA!

Overall, pretty good. I have one other sample to try of Della Terra Teas (a rooibos, gasp!). I really want in on the “Smore” tea they just released, I could see DBC being a precursor tea.

Received this tea as one of my mane many custom try me sample i don’t know what to say or think of this one the smell is really really good you can smell the chocolate and the cacao but i can’t find any of the taste when drinking it but at the same time i don’t find it bitter like i do with most black tea so there most be some taste other than tea in it.

i see in the description here 5 minute steep while the Website of Della Terra teas write 2-3 minute i will try it at 5 minute ( one or the other have the wrong info ) maybe the taste will get stronger in hope that it don’t get bitter with that kind of smell i hope to be able to have the taste to go with it

Updates: Following Della Terra Teas advice i was going to try this one with some sweetener ( cane sugar ) but i was out of it so Honey it be ! since it the only other sweet i can take .

The smell was still really nice. With honey in it the cacao taste is stronger, taste kinda like dark chocolate ( with chocolate and cacao i assume that was the purpose ) it my favourite kind so I’m good with it. A weird taste in that cup but that come from my honey .. i was probably really sleeping last time i bought honey it’s some weird flower honey i will have to buy some normal honey when i go for the sugar cane . Was way better that time still have enough to make another cup in my sample will try with the cane sugar.

Thanks for the review. We do suggest a 2-3 minute steep using boiling water on this. Without sugar we notice it has a more cocoa taste, almost like baking cocoa without the bitter. With sugars really brings out the milk chocolate taste.

Zoltar

Thanks for the answer ! i will try it with cane sugar since i don’t like normal sugar i have still enough to try it at least 2 more time surely i will find the way to get the taste out because it’s smell sooo good i just want to like it

Bonnie

You must play with your tea like you are in love.

Della Terra Teas

I totally agree Bonnie :)

Zoltar

i agree also but have to be more careful when a sample :P less quantity to play with

I am out of Florence but had an unopened 2 oz bag of this tea. I was oh so hopeful. I mean, double chocolate, right? I cringe at the name as they write it, by the way.

The dry leaf smells like chocolate and it looks a tad moist. Eagerly dumped 2 DAVID’s perfect measure into the 16 oz steeper I have from there, pour boiling water over it and tick-tock, tick-tock, waited the recommended 3 minutes. Added 1 tsp of raw cane sugar and took the tentative sip. Umm.. it’s bitter. Like dark chocolate bitter. It’s not a bad thing, just not what I expected.

I know all about how dark chocolate, couveture and the likes should be superior to milk chocolate (especially since I’m a chef with a short stint as a pastry chef) but the mouth likes what it likes, right?!?

I don’t like the taste of milk so I knew adding some would be a mistake but did it anyway. I added a splash. Probably a teaspoon worth of milk. It’s a good tea, folks. My partner had a sip of mine and promptly asked for a large cup of her own. So between the two of us we drank quite a bit, with resteeps. BUT be prepared for dark chocolate taste. I so wish that tea companies specify when they say chocolate. Because I think most of them use milk chocolate as opposed to dark and therefore that’s what a drinker would expect. Something about managing customer expectation comes to mind.

Florence continues to dominate the chocolate tea podium for me.

Ha! Bad timing…too bad, I just got rid of the 50g I had of this for my x-mas surprise gift box contest! I could have sent the whole thing to you!

@TheTeaFairy with your cupboard, I have a feeling that even with this one gone you still will be fine when it comes to variety.

Tea #6 from Traveling Tea Box C

So, I ordered the Chocolate Lovers Try Me Sampler from Della Terra a couple months back and they must have been out of this, because they subbed in The Malt Shop in its place (which meant I ended up with two samples of The Malt Shop, but I digress) so I was looking forward to having a chance to try this.

I definitely get chocolate from the aroma, but in an artificial sort of way. It actually made me think of the Tonka Cupcake Dolls from the 80s/90s (You know. The ones that have the plastic skirt that flips up so they turn into cupcakes?) They had this kind of generic artificially sweet smell to them, and that’s what this triggered.

The taste is chocolate; dark chocolate at that. It’s not as artificial as some of the chocolate has been in the other Della Terra blends I’ve tried, but it still has that aftertaste of I really don’t care for. The base is just okay, too.

This was kind of a swing and a miss for me, though.

I remember those dolls! Not the kind of chocolate aroma I want in my tea, for sure…

JustJames

never heard of the dolls… liked the tea though. i added cream to mine…. maybe that killed the aftertaste?

moraiwe

Latte-izing them usually makes Della Terra’s chocolate flavor so much better for me (ie killing the aftertaste), so it definitely a possibility :)

Short Sorceress

I still have a few chocolate teas left from Della Terra so I’ll keep that in mind. I didn’t particularly care for any of the Chocolate Lovers Try Me Sampler except for s’mores.

BrewTEAlly Sweet

I CAN’T WAIT TO TRY THIS I ALWAYS TRY TO ORDER IT BUT THEY ONY HAVE THE LARGE SIZE…:( TOO EXPENSIVE.

1.25 tablespoons for 375 ml of water

Dry leaf has a very artificial chocolate aroma.

Brewed tea has a primary chocolate aroma with only a bit of an artificial edge to it. There’s a definite underlying creaminess. Black tea aroma hints in the background.

Strong earthy taste. Artificial soapy-like chocolate flavour. Very faint black tea taste in the background.

Thanks Sil for sharing this with me!

like i forewarned…not crazy about the chocolate in DT’s teas. much prefer their other ones like oatmeal cookie, pumpkin pie, lemon chiffon etc…

Raritea

I totally get what you are saying now! I’m surprised that I had such a strong aversion to it though.

Sil

i think you’ll like the grandma’s pumpkin pie better. it’s got some decent spices in it….one of my more liked pumpkin blends so far

Indigobloom

oh dear. I have a feeling I’ll follow suit. Hey, one less tea for purchase! :)

Kittenna

I liked Dubbele Chocolade better than Double Chocolate Decadence. But I have only drank each of those once…

I got this in the fall Try Me pack. When I saw the fall one, I HAD to get it. I love anything fall and winter. And, while it may be fall in some places, it’ll still be a few months here in Texas before it gets below the triple digit weather.

My mom and I decided to try this tea first. It’s definitely chocolatey. It has the same good creamy chocolate flavor as their Chili Chocolate Truffle. I’m also picking up hints of smoky campfire flavors. I don’t think there was any flavor left in my cup from other things, so I’m assuming it is this tea. It doesn’t seem mentioned in the description, but I like the smokey hints!

Normally, I don’t like adding milk to my tea. But I always feel like I need to add milk to chocolatey teas. I tried it here, and I actually liked the tea better without the milk. It was still good with milk in, but it almost seemed to hide the flavors instead of enhancing them. Any chocolate tea that doesn’t need milk is great in my book!

I needed something desserty to keep me from eating all my kids candy so I made this. It wasn’t quite what I wanted. I was also craving coconut. Could be my kids chocolate coconut eggs that look so amazing. Anyway, i also brewed up some coconut cream pie by 52teas extra strong and mixed them together. Added some honey and milk. Yum.

Tealizzy

Sounds like a nice combination. I need to try blending. Mmmm, chocolate coconut eggs.

I think my tastebuds are out of wack with everyone else. This is NOT a tea i enjoy, but I’ll be happy to pass on to someone to try out as clearly others enjoy this :) The chocolate is less artificial than most of Della Terra’s chocolate teas for me but it’s just note a tasty cup.

Thanks Sil for this sample!!
The chocolate in here is indeed artificial tasting but somehow, in this cup, I don’t mind. It’s pleasant.
And… for some reason I am getting fruitiness in the cup when sans milk or sugar. Now that it’s cooled I get mostly chocolate.
Bah! When I portioned it out, I accidentally underleafed my cup so that could be why. Whatevs, it was tasty and I’m happy :)

Chocolatey sipdown!

Once in a while I crave hot chocolate, but hate that sugar-coated-teeth feeling you get afterwards. But it looks like I’ve found a replacement!

I agree with others that this is not as interesting as their other blends, but sometimes a girl just wants chocolate. Like simple, straight up, get-that-strawberry-off-my-cake chocolate. On its own it was sweet and chocolatey, and adding milk made it creamy but mellowed out the chocolate flavor a bit. Both were tasty in their own ways. I’ll probably wait till later in the year to restock this, cause today is the first official day of spring! (although the weather seems like it didn’t get the memo)
