From DAVIDsTEA

We take French toast very seriously around here. Which is why we created this sweet and buttery cardamom-spiced black tea with a dusting of cinnamon and cane sugar. It’s rich. It’s spicy. And it tastes just like the decadent breakfast of our dreams. Only this is one brunch tea you’ll be craving all day long.

Black tea, cinnamon, lemon peel, coriander seeds, cardamom, coconut sugar, cane sugar, natural and artificial flavouring

I liked this tea and then I didnt…. I drank it every day for weeks. And then all of a sudden the cardamom smell and the over-sweetness of it started to make me nauseous. However, I will review what it tasted like before I stopped liking it. It was actually really yummy. A perfect fall tea. The cardamom is slightly overpowering I actually started to pick them out of my scoops. I almost wish that they just did a “cinnamon french toast” tea instead of cardamom. But it was a warm and comforting, sweet and spiced fall tea.

Flavors: Cardamom, Maple Syrup, Spices, Sweet

ScubaArista

Me, too!!! I’m hoping I’ll feel the love again if I stop drinking it for a couple of weeks.

Day 21 of the 2015 Advent Calendar that I need to finish off before December. I loved the idea of this tea the moment I heard about it because I love cardamom in desserts and I love french toast so it’s a beautiful idea.

The dry leaf smell is very cardamom-y with some garam masala notes to it. I didn’t really smell anything too french toast-like or anything but I love the smell of cardamom so it doesn’t matter. In the spoon I steeped my tea in it had quite a bit of cardamom and coriander seeds in it, so I steeped it for a bit longer to try getting more flavor out of the tea leaves themselves, and I added a little bit of milk and sugar to give it more of that dessert appeal.

The tea itself tastes pretty nice, although I find it a bit mild. I would definitely use perhaps two perfect spoons per cup next time. The taste is like it says on the tin, with a lot of cardamom being prominent with black tea notes and some cake-like taste in the back. I’m glad that David’s brought this tea back this year because I want to give it another try with some more, fresh leaf.

Overall, it’s a good tea that I think will be nice to sip over the cold winter nights coming up.

This became a quick favourite of mine after I tried it last winter. So much so, that I’ve downgraded the Peanut Butter Cup tea from my top tier to create a new spot for Cardamom French Toast (so I’m slightly biased to sweet teas). I really enjoy the wonderful assortment of cinnamon, cardamom and lemon paired with the black tea. It has a lovely breakfast feel and aroma to it and I’ve had it with plain oatmeal often this past year. I find the sweetness of the tea makes up for not having anything on my oatmeal. There’s a really nice creaminess brewed up which DAVIDs description of being buttery seems quite apt to describe. Going to be stocking up on this again as my supply from last year is nearly depleted.

I’m confused. Did I buy a packet of sugar and cinnamon, or tea?
Honestly, this is a strong one, almost too strong. Wowsa.
I had to add milk just to tone things down. Sadly, the tea flavour was weak while the spices weren’t. Maybe I’ll grab an in store cuppa one day to see if that tastes any better.
I think it was just a bad cup. I’m hesitant to buy another sample…

Evol Ving Ness

Wow. Too bad. Have they changed the formula from when it was initially put out?

Fjellrev

This is what I’m wondering about too. I’m going to have to pick some up to see… well, taste… for myself.

Indigobloom

@Evol I don’t think I tried it the first time around, besides the in store samples. Maybe? I’m sure Sil could tell us :P

Indigobloom

@Fjellrev, let me know what you find!! I neeeeeed to know haha

Evol Ving Ness

yep, I don’t recall Sil mentioning anything about this. Perhaps we need to quiz her on this.

Indigobloom

No need after all, I tried it in store and it was MUCH better. Also asked the girl helping me and she said there really shouldn’t have been that much sugar in my sample; must have got a bad batch!

Plunkybug

I love this one…the milk makes it more eggy like french toast. I usually get a lemon custard note as well. BUT, I have not bought any this season since i returned. I had planned on getting a small amount to try again. I did get a cup to go and it seemed ok, but I find that teas to go aren’t always good or prepared how I like them, even if it is one I like.

Indigobloom

@Plunkybug, I think when I got my sample the tin was almost empty so got all the bits from the bottom. I might grab another sample, to try again… like yourself. I’ve noticed the same about in store vs homebrewed

Plunkybug

Yeah, def give it another go. It was a go to for me last winter. But I have to have it with milk…same as 52teas french toast one. It makes it more eggy and custardy. It does have coconut sugar in it, but I add a little more still. But that is personal. And as I have been reducing sugar in tea, I may no longer need it. Also, try as a latte.

Indigobloom

I’m curious to see what its like with eggnog!! can’t recall if I tried the french toast. Years ago, probably

I have trouble to love this tea. I feel like drinking perfume. I’ll try to give him a second chance

Have you ever been inside a Cinnabon? Where you walk in, and the sugar and cinnamon and grease just sort of float in the air? The smell is almost a solid presence?

That’s this tea. It’s strong. Just the smell is strong. And that’s not even the flavor. Let’s not even get into the flavor just yet, because the smell is so palatable that I received this for FREE. A friend bought it and promptly handed it to me, saying that the smell was so strong it was making her sick.

I took the bag, because I was born to handle sweets.

I came out of the womb with a sweet tooth. One fang, right in the middle of my face. The doctors were terrified.

But this, actually, might be a little strong for even me. This tea is a lot. It’s really really sweet and really really cinnamon-y. It basically screams for attention. Most teas just chill out until I sip them so I can get work done. This one remains in your mouth in between sips. It basically takes up residence, hangs up some posters, installs Febreeze plug-ins, turns on Netflix, and marathons some long-ass TV show.

This is a tea that’s so crazy I’m going to have to force mtchyg to try it. If anyone else wants to get into a tea swap with me for mostly dessert-y teas (I promise I have a ton of other stuff), you should send me a message. You would receive many delicious samples. Consider: a few teaspoons of this insane experience could arrive at your very doorstep.

Fjellrev

I haven’t tried this year’s yet but I guess that’s what I love about this tea: the strength of the flavouring, especially the cardamom. They’re not fooling around here!

mtchyg

I love it when you force me to try insane teas

Super Starling!

@fjellrev: They had the choice of going hard or going home. THEY OPTED FOR THE FORMER.
@mtchyg: It’s because I care.

I finally got to try this. Two three minute steepings. The first was the best. The second was weak. Overall a relaxing tea to drink because of the aroma. I think I would just add it full strength to another tea.

I would be a very good chai-ish tea if only there wasn’t so much added sugar! I feel like Davidstea is doing this more and more..

Sil

Agree on the added sugar…but I still can’t help loving it. It’s certainly a dessert treat for me though

This is one of my favourite teas from DT. It’s over a year old, so I’m trying to finish it up, but I don’t mind having this in my cupboard.

Maddy Barone

I’ve enjoyed it too.

Strangely, this didn’t really smell like anything in the mini tin. It doesn’t taste like much either. The tea was quite bland. There is a little cardamom and cinnamon, but mostly sugar, and nothing french toast like about it. I can decide for myself IF and how much sugar my tea has in it, thanks. It was okay enough to finish the container, but I wouldn’t bother buying it.
