Fire it up

Something magic happens when you grill a pineapple. The sugars caramelize, the juice gets sweeter and the flavour intensifies. It turns from an ordinary fruit into a golden gem of endless summer possibilities. And this insanely delicious tea perfectly captures the flavour of this juicy treat. It’s got huge pieces of real pineapple and toasty grains of roasted rice, all in a base of fresh green tea and sweet, smooth-drinking rooibos. In other words, it’s like drinking a cup of liquid sunshine.

At 1st, 2nd and even 3rd sip, I was not crazy about this tea. But I kept sipping and it kind of grew on me. I definitely got why many people said that they did not like this tea. It got alittle better after cooling off, so people who read this and don’t care for it, hot, try it iced down…maybe that will improve the taste a bit.

Jury’s out on whether I will get more though.

After Evol Ving Ness reminded me that this tea exists, I thought I’d pick up a bit when I went there earlier to try to snag a tin of Cranberry Pear at 40% off, which ended up being sold out anyway. I knew I should have grabbed one when I saw them on Boxing Day! Anyway, my mom came along and fell in love with the pink starry tree perfect mug and got that on sale, so the trip wasn’t all for naught.

This tea didn’t smell like much in the store. Faint dried pineapple but not discernible genmaicha aroma, which I was expecting. Bringing it home, though, in the pouch, the pineapple was very strong. Hmm, I think we’re going to get a flavour bomb here.

As a word of warning, the following description may not be for the faint of heart.

Steeped tea smells like sweetened canned pineapple juice, at least when you smell it up front in the beginning. But then my mom started to notice a funny odour in the air. She didn’t understand why she could smell vomit in the apartment. Clean rug, freshly laundered clothing, what’s the deal? Then she realized that it’s the tea and asked me to smell it up close. Vomit? Not really, but I see where she’s coming from with it, because to me, it’s like sugar-laden pineapple juice and a variety of stinky cheese. Not Tilsit. Nothing that bad. But something a little off. Then when I told her that she totally agreed with me on that too, and explained to me how baby burp-up has a similar undertone due to the milk, I guess.

In terms of the flavour, it is so freakishly sweet, but I shouldn’t be surprised since DAVIDsTEA’s pineapple blends always tend to be ridiculously sweet. My mom thought this had stevia in it or something. I don’t taste the base at all, just sugar-coated sugar with artificially sweetened dried pineapple.

I’ve been a silent lurker on this site for awhile, but this tea finally made me sign up!

Now, before I start, I’m a HUGE fan of David’s Tea. Like, whole cupboard filled and then some. I’m not an overly picky person nor a type of fancy tea connoisseur, so this is coming from just your average tea drinker.

With that aside, this tea was pretty well undrinkable, even for me!

Since grilled pineapple is one of my most fave additions to the grill in the summer, I was excited to ask for this flavor as a Christmas present. I had missed out on it during the summer, and it seems my local store still had it in stock.

Upon opening the container, you get a sort of musky, bold pineapple smell. Not totally bad, but a little off putting. I figured it was just the smell of the dried tea , so I shrugged and continued on. As it steeped, the aroma became stronger. I found myself wrinkling up my nose in disgust a little. It smelt like someone ran over a pineapple in a high speed car chase! Very potent smell of burnt sugar, like you’d smell on a grill after cooking some kind of sugary marinade.

Again, sorta just shrugged it off and took a sip. At first you’re hit with a sweeter pineapple taste, then you get a smokey, charred to a crisp finished. I nearly spat my tea all over my computer screen. Normally, grilled pineapple is absolutely delicious, but in drinking form?? Ugh, awful! It tastes extremely artificial. I can see where they were going with the flavors, but this did noooot translate well in my opinion. So in combination with the horrid smell, and very odd flavoring, this tea is defiantly not a buy for me.

I’m going to try and put it in my smoothies in the morning just to get rid of it, but besides that, never again!! Sorry David’s tea! This was a total strike out!

This tea is unusual but good! I’m surprised this doesn’t have a higher rating I’m really liking the sweet pineapple toasty-ness. To me what can be off putting is either the blackberry or rooibos or both, with that said THE SECOND BREW IS BEST.

I had this iced from the store today. Walking around downtown after a docs app I was so parched and really needed a beverage!
Somehow I knew this would hit the spot. SO my review may be biased. But I was right, it was perfection.
Great pineapple notes, with that slight burnt taste. A little too sweet for day to day, and there was something in there that wasn’t exactly what I wanted(artificial almost, but it didn’t mention that in ingredients) but I didn’t really care because I found it so tasty. Shrugs…
All of that said, I did kinda want more of the popped rice flavour!

Plunkybug

I liked this one, but there is an artificial note that develops as the tea cools.

Indigobloom

Yeah I know what you mean. That is why it won’t be added to my cupboard. Not that I need more in there heh

Plunkybug

I might get is again next summer…maybe 50g for the whole summer, maybe less. I dunno.

Indigobloom

Yeah I could see myself getting just a bit, to spice things up once in awhile. There are a lot of DT blends like that for me. I guess that is how they get most of my money. Ha!

Plunkybug

Same here…

I got more of this today, to try again, seeing that I think I liked it last year. I have now identified what that artificial taste is…I have tasted it in other teas from them…pretty sure it is the blackberry leaves. Sadly, the new mango black has it in it and I missed that, and I misses it being in this one til I looked at it again. Blech. I might just go return this straight away, but I feel like I ought to give it another chance. Should have gotten half of what I got though. I think…

Indigobloom

Hmmm I’ll have to keep an eye out. Thanks for the tip!! :)

I forgot to review this one from… last week? The week before that…? Either way, I had it and I’m not sure I like it. It is definitely pineapple and it’s definitely sweet and fruity. But at the same time, I don’t like the grilled part of this tea. It has that almost smokey or grilled taste that you would get from a bar-b-q which is great that they nailed it, but at the same time, I don’t like that addition to my teas sadly. Maybe it would be better iced…

I was very pleased with this tea! I bought an ounce to try and came running back into the store the next day to get more!I don’t really like the smell of the dry leaves. I think the “grilled” toasty smell threw me off a little but it tastes great. The pineapple notes are just subtle enough to not overtake the tea while still adding sweetness and a light flavor to the tea. The toasty flavor from the rice comes after the pineapple. It did not taste burnt to me at all but was a nice counter to the sweetness of the pineapple. I have only had this hot and unsweetened and I usually can only brew this a second time before the flavor gives out.

I’m shocked this tea has such poor reviews. I LOVE IT. I love the toasted flavour from the rice. I think it suits a green tea. The pineapple flavour is so bold and fresh. I love the smell of the dry tea too.

I love it hot, but it also makes a lovely iced summer tea. Resteeps well. I actually prefer the second or third steep because I find the first a bit too sweet for my taste.

My honest reaction to this tea was not good. To be as eloquent as possible but staying true to this review, it smelled like old running shoes mixed with the rancid acidic smell of fresh vomit. The flavor was not as potent however it remained undrinkable as an iced beverage. I believe this tea should come with a warning label to indicate that it is unpleasant.

DavidsTea’s July monthly tea, Grilled Pineapple. This tea smells strongly of natural pineapple, and has appetizing chunks of pineapple. The tea has a lightly pineapple flavour to start but ends in a bit of a burnt flavour. It’s not my favourite tea
