From 52teas

This is one of the big fan favorites!

Here’s the original description:

“Have you ever stopped to enjoy the cool quiet of an old cemetery on a fall evening? Ever stayed to watch the evening mist roll in? Maybe stayed overnight on a dare and found yourself waking in the wet grass to the vision of sunlight slipping through the vanishing mist?

Me either, but that’s kind of what this tea reminds me of.

Part Chinese sencha, part Yun Wu (Cloud Mist), with marshmallow root, spearmint and natural marshmallow, spearmint and a hint of malt flavors, this is a smooth, silky experience with the sweet pique of spearmint subdued and made ghost-like—subtle, but haunting."

Since this is one of those long-time faves. we didn’t want to alter it, so we stuck to the recipe.

Ingredients: Organic Chinese green teas, organic marshmallow root, organic dried spearmint leaves, all-natural organic flavors.

Another Travelling Tea Box 4

So the tea box arrives on Halloween night, and one of the teas is Graveyard Mist. Of course I have to try it. I’m not sure that it reminds me of anything eerie, but I did enjoy it.

It has a very minty aroma. The taste is interesting. The flavors move back and forth between the green tea and the mint. This works for me, but in the end the mint was a bit too much. The second steep had the same minty nose, but the taste is more subdued. I actually like it better than the first steep: better balance between the tea and the mint.

Ever seen the name of a tea and been instantly sold on it? You just find the name either so whimsical or evocative that not trying this tea would be a crime, well that is how I felt when I saw Graveyard Mist. I love graveyards, they are fascinating places to explore. So much history and usually beautifully designed architecture, you can learn a lot about people from their burial practices. Well that sounded more grim than I intended it to! Anyway, when I lived in the mountains almost a decade ago the house was right next to an old church and an equally old graveyard (I think the oldest grave site was from 1790). At the time I was working night shift so a lot of mornings I would come home to a misty graveyard to wander around. And now to the actual tea review!

Graveyard Mist by 52Teas is a blend of Spearmint, Marshmallow Root, Chinese Sencha, Yun Wu, and a hint of Malt. Everything about this tea seems ethereal, from the cloud white roots to the delicate green leaves. The aroma of the leaves is wonderful! Very sweet from the Marshmallow Root, which if you have ever had Marshmallows made from real Marshmallow, you know it is a treat. There is also a very slight vegetal aroma and also very mild mint aroma. Both are more of an afterthought as the Marshmallow steals the show.

After brewing the leaves, ah, there is that promised spearmint! The Marshmallow sweetness becomes light and is replaced with the aroma of of light, vegetal, green. Very evocative of clean mist over a green field (or in this case green graveyard) and it is very pleasant. The most remarkable feature of the aroma is how refreshing it is, in retrospect I wish I would have brewed this in the morning.

The flavor is mild and refreshing. The sweetness is subtle and yes, it tastes like marshmallows. The spearmint is also mild and feels like a palate cleanser with each sip. The green teas taste mildly vegetal with absolutely no bitterness to speak of. Everything about this tea is mild, subtle, and refreshing. The name Graveyard Mist captures it perfectly. Sadly the other tea drinker in the house, Ben, did not like it. I handed the cup for him to taste and his response was ‘too minty.’ I had hoped that the mint taste was subtle enough to sneak under his radar, but alas. So avoid if you have a strong loathing of mint.

Spoiler Alert!!!

On the sixth day of Christmas my true love gave to me a mug full of … Graveyard Mist tea.

This was on my must try list from 52 Teas and I am extremely thrilled to be trying it. Green tea + spearmint (my favourite mint) = magic in my opinion and that is why it was on my list.

Smell wise once brewed it’s very spearminty and refreshing in a sweet way. It also tastes that way too: sweet, minty and a little vegetal. Any fan of mint would like this blend. The blend as a whole is somewhat smoky/misty in a strange yet satisfying way, possibly because it’s not overly minty but is lighter than you would expect.

I love it :D

Pretty tasty.

I get a big note of mintiness and then a soft roundness of something creamy (marshmellow perhaps?). It feels light and airy and if your going for a fog effect this fits the bill perfectly.

I was pleasantly surprised by this blend. When I first read the description of this tea I was convinced that it was not a tea for me – but I took a chance and I am glad I did! The combination of marshmallow root and spearmint with a green tea base make for a rather interesting and unique blend. The marshmallow and malt flavors cut the sharpness of the spearmint flavor perfectly lending a subtle sweetness to the brew.

As soon as I smelled this it reminded me of spermint toothpaste and something else. Then I tasted it and it reminded me of spermint toothpaste and something else…lol I can’t say that was a good thing. I see from the ingredients that it has marshmallow, but I don’t think that is what I was tasting. I may give this another shot, just because I see so many people enjoyed it and I feel like I am missing something…

AJRimmer Advent Day 16

This is such an iconic 52Teas blend, I feel like I’ve surely sampled it somewhere along the line! But if I have, I never wrote a tasting note. Today, I found it to be a nice balance of cool mint and warming vanilla with the green tea adding some depth and complexity but (thankfully) no bitterness or astringency. I enjoyed it hot, but I’m guessing it would also be lovely iced or cold brewed.

Day 11 of my Steepster homemade advent calendar from Kelmishka! I haven’t had a lot of 52teas’ blends in recent years, and I never got to try this one, so I’m excited to see it here! The name’s a little macabre for my personal taste, but the flavor more than makes up for it. This is frickin delicious. I forget who was talking about 52teas’ marshmallow flavoring recently – I think it might have been Roswell Strange on an old episode of GeekSteep I was listening to – but I remember them talking about how 52teas uses marshmallow root and doesn’t use actual marshmallows, so it gets a really authentic marshmallow taste without the weird mouth coating or steeper clogging that tends to happen when marshmallows are included in a blend. That feels dead on (hehe) in this blend, where it’s all marshmallowy goodness with none of the negatives. I also really like the way that the cooling mint plays with it – I wasn’t sure that I would, but it’s actually a really refreshing and pleasant combo. Super super happy with this one.

I loved this one! I had the version with a Doctor Who Weeping Angel on the label!

Kelmishka

Ahh, glad you liked it! This one is SO good.

Kaylee

Oh I can totally see this as a fandom blend- the Weeping Angel connection totally works.

52Teas

There was a blend called Weeping Angel. It’s a buttered toffee caramel corn flavored black tea.

Nattie

I love this one!

Brewed up a nice pot of this minty green tea on a strange sort of Sunday: It’s 75˚F, but cloudy and humid, with occasional sprinkles. The wind is a-gusting, sending leaves and pine needles skittering across my yard. It’s like… steamy-spooky. Which might explain why this name of this tea appealed to me! :D

I never find myself reaching for the few straight mint teas I have in my cupboard. I love mint in general, but I find mint tea very one-note, and it tends to bore me after a while. There’s only so much mint flavor you can take in a sitting, y’know? But because this blend has more going on, it’s working for me, big time! It’s like a minty, creamy, marshmallow… or maybe one of those melt-in-your-mouth mints? Butter mints? Yeah, that’s exactly what this tea is evoking for me. Butter mints! It’s like an elevated version of Twinings’ Buttermint. I love that it gives a sensation of sweetness without actually being sweetened. And the sharp spearmint is a great foil to the rich, creamy mouthfeel of the marshmallow root.

It smells and tastes delightful and screams “winter holiday” to me, which is no bad thing this time of year. I’m really enjoying it and could see it becoming my go-to mint tea.

Minty and creamy with a hint of astringent green tea at the end. A nicely drinkable version of Moroccan mint tea.
