Also oversteeped, although not as astringent as Radioactive Marshmallow. Doesn’t really taste anything like peanut butter or jelly, but I don’t remember it ever working for me. (Also, there weren’t any sunflower seeds left in it, not sure if I removed them previously or not, but at least they weren’t rancid.)

I had a really bad run of severely oversteeping all my teas today. This is not one to oversteep; it was quite bitter mixed with marshmallow. Even diluting it didn’t help all that much. Oh well.

52Teas

Yeah – this one should not be oversteeped. Sorry that happened. :(

Kittenna

At least it wasn’t a sipdown! Haha.

52Teas

I really like this tea – but because the base is a really strong CTC base, it’s one that will definitely get bitter if it’s oversteeped.

I don’t recall caring much for this the first time I had it, but I’m enjoying it more this time. The peach is light, but realistic, and there’s some creaminess. The base is present and a bit astringent; don’t think it’s from steeping error as I was fairly careful, but it’s hard to say. I’m finding that this tea tastes best when slowly savoured, to give the peach time to develop on the tongue – sipping it quickly makes it taste like a generic fruity green.

Although I don’t think this is a tea I’d pick up again, it does make me excited for the latest peach tea in the 52teas lineup, headed my way right now! (Yay teamail!)

Review for the Sep 2020 reblend. Drinking it cooled to room temp, and it’s really satisfying. Spot-on root beer flavouring with the robustness of the tea base, no astringency. And the bonus of satisfying a root beer craving without the sugar.

getanzt

I have this one in my stash and need to try it soon!

Kittenna

You do! It’s so good. I’ve had root beer teas from other companies before, and they just don’t compare IMO.

I swear that I smelled citrus when I opened the packet/while brewing, but I really didn’t notice it in the sip. Instead, it was just a delicious cup of fluffy marshmallowy genmaicha, maybe a tad more vanilla-y than some others. A really tasty cup, just missing that expected fruit flavour.

drank Boo-Berry Cotton Candy by 52teas

There are two listings for this tea; one is “v2” but I’m not actually sure what the difference is. Anyhow, this review is for a sample packet from Oct 2020, and the tea tastes very much like my memory – cotton candy sweetness, berry, and a strong, almost smoky, green tea base. Just delicious.

52Teas

The difference between the v.2 & Frank’s Boo-Berry Cotton Candy is that Frank’s was made with young hyson & gunpowder – and it took me a while to find a young hyson that I enjoyed – so my version of this from 2020 was made with gunpowder & chun mee (which is my “go-to” green tea blend). The change in base is why I called the 2020 version a v.2.

Kittenna

Ah! That makes sense. Pretty sure my reviews are on the wrong versions, but oh well. I did quite enjoy the 2020 base tea.

2022 Sipdown 120/365!

Delicious! So roasty, mapley, and with a bit of plum. Really enjoying this tonight, and only sipping it down as I have a second packet squirrelled away. I wonder what the base is here – it tastes like it must be something unique because I can’t imagine the roasted, almost smoky notes being from a flavouring.

52Teas

The base is a Gao Yan Fujian black tea with just a teensy bit of Lapsang Souchong added for a hint of roasted & smoky notes.

ashmanra

That base sounds marvelous.

Mastress Alita

I love this one!

Kittenna

Ah! Of course it’s lapsang for that smokiness. I should have guessed, but I think it was just so balanced that it didn’t cross my mind. The lapsang made itself known in the second infusion, though, probably because of a slightly longer steep + less flavouring.

Cup from a second opened package of this, from the same batch. Quite tasty, just love the marshmallow on that toasted houjicha base.

2022 Sipdown 119/365!

Not really sure that I get bread pudding from this, but it’s a nice, raisiny, spiced oolong. An acceptable sipdown since it’s not a favourite (although I did rate it rather highly apparently).

Rich and robust but not astringent. Definitely a breakfast tea! I didn’t get enough flavouring in it, though. Wanted more burnt sugar and vanilla.

Profile

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
