From Steepster

A rare and innovative black tea from Fujian, China. Sweet and smooth with notes of caramel and sour cherry. Unlike traditional black tea, our Wuyishan Black is made from oolong varietals. This unorthodox method imbues our Wuyishan with complex fruit aromatics and a deep flavor that reveals itself through multiple infusions.

My nose is a little congested today so I am not getting much aroma from this tea. That may be why I am missing the earth and smoke that others have described. However, this is one of the best black teas I can remember having. It reminds me of the best elements of a cherry truffle without being overly sweet. For a black tea it has very little astringency so that the flavors of the tea remain smooth and linger. You can easily pickup the slight caramel sweetness and the tart cherry flavors. These flavors are very balanced. A great tea to start the day and paired nicely with the scrambled eggs I had this morning.

Mild black tea flavor, very nice notes of fruit in the finish. Not a particularly bold tea, would be nice for summer and warmer days. Nice flavor complexity, with many delicate overlapping tastes. Light tannins, very easy to drink. 8/10

Got another one from the TTB. The description on this was, “Sweet and smooth with notes of caramel and sour cherry”, so I figured I’d try it. This one had only a tsp left, so I figured it was safe to take.
It says “sour cherry”….but honestly…it tastes like sour wood. xD It’s like wood…with a bite to it. xD
This is just….weird. xD Apparently I did not pick out good teas from the TTB. XD

I love Wuyi oolong. I wonder if i like this one. Probably yes.

Tamarindel

How sad! The promised caramel and sour cherry sounds like it would have been a great combination.

I received two individual servings in the Steepster black tea sampler.

I steeped according to instructions, and the result was a golden orange liquor with a faintly sweet aroma and a toasted caramel flavor. It was rather pleasant, but more subtle in flavor than I tend to favor. It was also good during one resteep, with similar character as the first. I normally only steep black teas once, but noticed in Steepster’s description that this was suitable for multiple resteeps. I would love to steep it several times to observe how it changes. Unfortunately today wasn’t the day for it, as I was busy being dad.

I’m sitting here finishing up some studying and wanted to try a new cup of tea and write a tasting note to relax. This one sounded ideal as it’s supposed to be sweet and smooth. It smells sweet, a little bit tangy and very earthy.

Sipping… eh, I don’t know if I like this one. It’s smooth and quite sweet, but it has a sort of smoky hay note that I’m not fond of. The finish leaves a sort of sourdough tang in the back of your throat. It’s weird because the first part of the sip is very tasty… sweet and silky. It just changes so fast into that smoky hay flavor that it ruins the cup for me.

I can see this tea being a favorite of some as it does have a silky, smooth mouthfeel and light sweetness. My tastebuds just don’t seem to agree with this one today.

I was not a fan

Stephanie – glad I’m not alone in not enjoying this one so much. I feel like it had such potential to be awesome, but something was just off about it.

Strangely. I found this to be much more smokey than the Golden Yunnan I tried from In Pursuit of Tea, even though everyone seemed to find that too tobacco-y. Wasn’t really a fan, much too smokey for me apparently. I did end up adding extra sweetener and liked it better that way, but it’s not something I would ever buy.

Arshness

I am further convinced we have opposites tastebuds. :D This one was nice and smooth to me. The Yunnan was eugh.

Mandy

The good thing is if one of us ever has a tea we don’t like, the other will probably like it and want to swap, haha

Arshness

Haha yes! When I go BLEH I’ll have to send it to you and see if you love it haha :D

This is my second pick from the TTB. I would have tried another fruity one, but it was close to dinner and I wanted something more like this, a black tea with a hint of flavor. I’m not sure if this tea is “flavored” black tea, or just black tea with a lot of character. I don’t know enough about Steepster’s varieties to know…

The flavor is like a really pure delicious black tea with a sweet floral or fruitish note accompanying it. The nose is sweet and not at all bitter with a fruitish, flowery tail. The lingering flavor is very smooth and sweet, almost honeyish, but more nectarish if that makes sense. It’s not a thick, deep sweet, but a light, fluid sweetness.

I really don’t taste even a tiny hint of bitter or astringent, so I suggest maybe others who noted that had oversteeped it or brewed too hot. This tea is perfect. I wish I knew where to acquire more of it.

T&C TTB#12: Smells not of smoke. Taste is smoke and earth with a little dryness. Not bad but not really my thing due to the smoke. It’s a little more than I like. Nice to have tried it, though.

TTB&C #8

This is an epic fail on my part. I am blaming my overworked brain this week. I for some reason had it in my head that this was a Verdant sample. I even searched my cupboard to make sure I didn’t already own THIS verdant tea. As I was tearing open the package and dumping the contents into my steeper I realized that this was not a Verdant tea, this was a Steepster Select tea, which I have tried, haven’t reviewed, and still have one package left of it. So this will just be a swap out. I will enjoy this package and add my sample pack to the box.

This tea is very nice treat tonight. It is earthy/woody with a fruity after taste. It is really really hitting the spot tonight. My first steep of this in December I remember not knowing what to think.

Great sample. Caramel malt and cherry oh my. Brewed in a small yixing and served gongfu style to a group of friends and we now have a few new tea converts among us.
