This was the free sample at Red Leaf this month. I’ve never had matcha before, so I figured I’d order it and give it a try! Dry, the almond scent is extremely strong, which got me a little excited.

I don’t have any experience with matcha. I wanted to try it cold with milk so I looked around to see what other people had done. I ended up mixing about a half teaspoon of powder with an ounce or two of hot water, stirring to dissolve. Then I added 8 ounces of vanilla soymilk and mixed it all up. Overall, I thought it came out pretty tasty. I could definitely taste the almond, but it was overpowering, and I could just taste a hint of the matcha. Not going to rate it because I have no idea what I’m talking about! :D

Flavors: Almond, Marzipan

Preparation
0 OZ / 0 ML
Marzipan

I do 8 oz milk, 1 t matcha, a few ice cubes and sugar to taste in a blender.

Cameron B.

Maybe I’ll try that next time. Although with the vanilla soy milk, I probably wouldn’t need sugar. :D

Marzipan

I sort of went by the card that came with the matcha.

Skulleigh

I really like matcha, so I tend to throw extra in when I do a latte – 2 to 3 tablespoons. If I am just preparing it traditionally I follow the instructions. Also, did you sift it? It’s much easier to blend if you sift it- I have a special little sifter thing, but you could also use a brewing basket and sift it through there but smooshing it through the screen with a spoon.

mj

I like the verb “smooshing”

Arshness

I usually warm my milk then add matcha and shake it in a shaker. :) I add sugar before I shake. It comes out frothy, blended and delicious. :)

White Rabbit

What ingredients do you put in your smoothie?

Kirkoneill1988

Alas, I did not get to make an almond matcha smoothie. Usually I use milk, banana and starter matcha. http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/starter-matcha-en.html

Kirkoneill1988

I might try today though

Matcha!

I was so happy that Red Leaf made this the sample of the month. I have been waiting to try it for a while, and this was my big chance. I have to admit that the scent put me off at first. However, it tastes pretty yummy. I am to the point where I mix it up in about 8 oz of almond milk with just a little sweetener. I also had some chia seeds on hand, and threw about a half tablespoon in and then blended it all up. You know, this is not a bad combo at all. I may even put in half a frozen banana next time. Also, I would consider buying this, but I need to seriously drink some of the matcha I have. Sweet with the taste of almond. I wonder what flavoring level this is in the sample…..it is perfect.

Mixed with some vanilla almond milk and a few ice cubes, this was delightful! The almond flavour really works, although I wish I could taste the matcha more. Yumm-ay.

Sipdown (179/185)!

This is the first thing I’m having from the newest package of teas VariaTEA has sent me; it was the easiest to work into my tea line up for the day because I just made it alongside the other cup of matcha I was having this morning.

Man, this smells strong! What’s the flavouring level here? Because I cracked open the package from you and literally this is the first thing I could smell. It was intense, even after VariaTEA double bagging it! Good intense though; like marzipan and yum!

Whisked into milk, it frothed up at a seriously insane level. Like, I had to wait for the froth to go away so I could pour more milk in the cup – the froth was taking up all the space! And it tasted pretty good; really strong and very rich and marzipan like. I would have enjoyed it an awful lot but I found that there was a faint chemical edge to the aftertaste. Like it was almost too much almond concentrated into the one cup of cold milk.

I have to say, I’m glad I got this from you because I was semi curious about it, and it’s Red Leaf’s free tea sample of the month for June so I think I would have picked up the free sample if I hadn’t got this from you. But now trying it I can say that yeah this is really good but just the one experience is probably enough to keep my satisfied especially given how much matcha I have on hand right now anyway.

Thanks VariaTEA!

NayLynn was actually the one who sent this to me and she was the smart one who thought to double bag it. I simply passed it along so you can try all the matchas too :)

Thanks to NayLynn too then!

Good afternoon Steepster…
We were having a nice, warm sunny day but the fog rolled in and took care of that (typical for San Francisco).

I got this matcha in my last Red Leaf order. I wasn’t a big fan of the Belgian chocolate, but this is a lot better. I made a hot latte with it this afternoon and I made a cold matcha drink with soymilk in it the other day. Each drink was equally as good. It does have a slightly sweeter, marzipany quality about it, but I liked that. In my opinion this is pretty yummy and somehow less grassy than the Belgian chocolate, though I did order the standard matcha flavor on this as well. I prepared this by nuking my soymilk in the microwave and then mixing it up with a milk frother.

I bet it is gorgeous down on the peninsula! I’ll be there in a week and can’t wait to go tea shopping. Eeeee!

TeaBrat

Nice! Where do you plan to go?

TeaterTotter

I moved to Cali mid-December and I have been dying to go see what SF has to offer in terms of loose leaf.

Dustin

Oh man, everywhere! Lupicia, David’s, there are several shops I have book marked that sell Kusmi or Mariage Freres both in SF and Oakland.

TeaBrat

Dustin, you may also want to check out Red Blossom in Chinatown if you like Chinese teas!

Tealizzy

Hey Dustin, where can you get Mariage Freres teas in SF? I haven’t come across them yet.

Dustin

Last time I was in town I checked out several tea shops in Chinatown. Red Blossom was interesting, but packed with tourists tasting, so it was really hard to get any help and I just ended up leaving.

Dustin

From what I have read, a lot of the William Sonomas in the bay area have a few tins. Bi-Rite markets have mini Kusmi tins. Dandelion has MF… I thought I had a few more bookmarked for SF.
In the East Bay The Pasta Shop has MF in tins and bulk, Market Hall Foods and Maison d’Erte are supposed to have them too. Pasta Shop is the only one I have been too, the others I have just seen online mentions of having gotten MF there in the past.

Tealizzy

Thanks!

TeaBrat

There is a French bakery in Hayes Valley called Chantal Guillon, aside from macarons they sell MF teas, or at least they did the last time I was there which was 2 years ago or something

This. I do not like this. It isn’t so much nutty almond as it is overly sweet marzipan. I am just not a fan. However I am super grateful to Naylynn for the chance to try this.

VariaTEA

It’s okay. If I liked them all, I would be broke so it is nice to find a few that are definitely not reorders.

Stephanie

Hmm, I’ve been debating about trying this flavor. Now I’m not sure…

VariaTEA

If you like marzipan, you may enjoy it. However, I was hoping for a flavor more reminiscent of the nut

Interesting flavor, the best way to describe it is similar to a caramel almond butter type flavor.

Had this tea once before, but can not find it. It is very good, reminiscent of the caramel macchiato tea I reviewed. They are made by the same company…………haven’t seen either in a while. In closing this tea has a delicious mild flavor to it.
