Sweet anticipation
Is there anything more summery than a big bowl of strawberry shortcake? We look forward to strawberry season all year, just for that familiar dish of ripe, juicy berries, golden pastry and a cloud of whipped cream. But with this sweet, juicy blend, you can enjoy the taste of summer anytime, anywhere. It’s a dreamy mix of black tea with sweet strawberries and toasty pieces of brittle – ice it with a bit of cream for the full experience.
Ingredients: Black tea, brittle pieces, strawberry.
DavidsTea is a Canadian specialty tea and tea accessory retailer based in Montreal, Quebec. It is the largest Canadian-based specialty tea boutique in the country, with its first store having opened in 2008.
I got a sample of this in an order a couple of months ago, and thought today, with the roofers in a work, replacing the roof, and a forest worth of printing for the Board for my work to do, that shortcake was the way to go (the low-cal form of course).
The smell, dry and wet, its quite strong, very strawberry cheese/shortcakey. The taste is nice, a nice creamy strawberryness. My timolino-ful is a bit bitter, but I think that may have been a last minute, rush out the door steeping error on my part.
So quite tasty, will steep the remainder and ice tonight with a smidge of agave to see how it goes cold.
Another sample that came with my David’s Tea shipment. I appreciate the opportunity to try it, but I don’t think I’ll buy it — it was fairly ordinary sweetish, kinda fruity, but it did not proclaim either strawberries or shortcake to me.

Taking it easy today. The other day I got my 3rd stripe on my white belt in brazilian jiu jitsu. Yesterday I rolled and got a buggered thumb and a cut lip. I got an advanced class tonight and probably going to get more damaged similar to last week as blue belts pick me off doing crazy moves on me.
With that said, a nice strawberry tea? yum!
DRY: Very sweet strawberry smell that is also nutty. I ate one of the brittle pieces and it was chewy, weird! Lots of brittle pieces and strawberry chunks. (wonder if they load samples to be a perfect spread of tea?)
STEEPED: Strawberry and black tea smell. Hmmm.. now I recall I did get my nosed winged in last night too. Uggg, I’m an injury magnet.
TASTE: Black tea base with a slight tart strawberry (like as if the strawberry wasn’t fully ripe tart). Quite sweet. I couldn’t pick out the nuttyness.
Sweetened, the strawberry comes out more. However, sweetening this tea seemed overkill as it is already sweet. No bitterness or astringency.
WHO’D LIKE THIS TEA: A black tea drinker that likes sweet teas – it’s already sweet! Also a pretty good black base that isn’t ultra robust, so someone wanting to try a black tea could give this one a go.
COMMENTS: really good but I wish I didn’t sweeten the last of my pot as it was just too sweet for me! I added sweetener before I tasted it. I wish I got creamy and nutty notes from the name strawberry shortcake, all I got was strong tarty yet sweet strawberry.
Overall, not bad, probably would be good iced (the focus of the summer collection).
Strawberry Shortcake, huckleberry pie… who’s gonna be your lucky guy, A, B, C, D (mine ends at D)… and so goes the sing along while playing skip rope.
Alright, I must be the minority here. I bought 100g of this my first ever order of Davids tea. The whole 100g, I have been trying to convince myself to like it.
The smell… so fake, so astringent. The lack of black tea to balance out what feels like a bottle of liquid fake Strawberry flavour. Am I the minority here? This tea is flat out gross… I’ve tried it with milk, cream, sugar, stevia, brown sugar… you name it. I’ve steeped, oversteeped, understeeped, over-leafed, under-leafed… NOTHING. I made myself a nice mug of it hoping to sooth my some what sombre mood and it just made me a little irritated. WHY does DT have to use fake tastes… and why does this tea curdle my milk and cream? They’re fresh, very fresh in fact… WHY!?!?!
This tea had a lot of potential, but with the lack of leaves, the fake taste and the murky look to it… I just don’t understand what all the fuss is about. I have about 30g left and after that, good bye, never again. I’m glad I get to stop before S in my skip rope song, because quite frankly… if I had to drink Strawberry shortcake for the rest of my life… I would be one sad sad excuse for a tea lover.

This was alright, not a favorite though. Definitely did taste like strawberry and a bit vanilla/cake-y. My cup was cloudy though, not sure why or if that’s normal. Wish I had a chance to try this cold, but I used all my sample up. :(
I probably should start off by admitting that I am NOT a big iced tea drinker. As far as I’m concerned, the way to drink tea is hot. I’m literally the kind of person who will brew a nice steaming cup in 30-something degree weather (Celsius!) and thoroughly enjoy it.
So, if this tastes best as an iced tea… I’m probably missing out.
According to my estimation, I made the tea a little stronger than it’s supposed to be, and the flavours still came out being rather delicate — a little too much for my liking. It was certainly pleasant — I enjoyed two steeps of it in my two-cup teapot, but I just found it… not strong enough for the flavour to come through.
I had it both plain and with milk. I think I liked how the flavour worked a little better with the milk added personally, but it did work well both ways.
If you like light-flavoured teas, you might really enjoy this. Personally, however, I like my tea with a little more oomph with it.
I finished off my sample of this tonight, so time for a review!
The loose leaves smell so heavenly, and the idea of the little strawberries is tantalizing, but the actual cup is kind of a disappointment. It really does taste like strawberry shortcake, and you can taste the strawberries… but the black tea falls short.
It’s good when it’s pretty hot, but as soon as it cools it’s pretty much undrinkable.
Kind of fun to try and have a sample for a bit, but not something I could see myself drinking more than a few times in my life. Maybe I just can’t get into the idea of a cup of tea tasting like cake. We had our little affair, and now it is done.
this tea is delicious. with a name like strawberry shortcake how could it NOT be.
it has caffeine, but i’ve been drinking coffee again for the first time in probably a year, so i can enjoy this tea with no guilt. in fact it will help me ween off caffeine again :)
this tea is warm and inviting and smells sweet and amazing. because of the candy pieces in it it’s also slightly sweet on the tongue. but not too sweet. it tastes real. and smells real. and i want more.
