From Butiki Teas

Glenburn Estate Darjeeling is a black tea that originates from the Glenburn Estate located in the Himalayas above the Rungeet River in India. Graded FTGFOP-1 (Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe, First Flush), this Darjeeling is comprised of tender shoots plucked during the onset of spring. The Glenburn Estate is working closely with the board of the Ethical Tea Partnership, which focuses on sustainability and living and working conditions of those working at tea estates, to bring the ETP to the Darjeeling region and is focused on maintaining high ethical standards. Our Darjeeling has gentle citrus, fragrant floral, and sweet juicy peach notes with some mild ginger notes. This smooth tea is free of astringency and has as substantial body.

Ingredients: Indian Black Tea

Not a favorite
but worth trying none the less
now it’s gone, sipdown.

Haha. I love it!
If I wasn’t totally addicted to Doodle Or Die, I would try reviewing teas in Haiku, but maybe another day.

My son Drew was really into doodle or die for awhile

Full Review on SororiTea Sisters on the 21st but here are the snippits:

Glenburn Estate Darjeeling from Butiki Teas is a prime example of a quality first flush Darjeeling. If you are like me and generally prefer second flush you should still give this one a try, because it is worth it to have one of the best first flush Darjeeling’s as a tea lover and connoisseur.

The flavor notes are so laid back, mellow, but absolutely present. I love the light juicy sweet peach notes, the light lilting floral flavor, and that ever so subtle touch of ginger, which I pick up more in the aroma than the flavor but again, the flavor is there. I even get a honey aroma and note on the palate.

This has made it to my shopping list.

Indigobloom

For some reason I got pear when I tried mine. Mind you it was mixed with mango and cilantro LOL

Butiki Teas

Indigobloom-I’m pretty sure we tried the Glenburn Moonlight as the base. This one is a little different. :)

Kashyap

still a touch early for first flush isn’t it? I believe all 1st Flush Darjeelings are harvested in March and unless you have a direct connection to the estate and are willing to pay a premium, the tea wouldn’t hit foreign shores till April

TeaBrat

kashyap, it’s probably a 2012 tea

Kashyap

good likelihood that the ‘mellow’ flavors are due to is age then…but still a notable tea if the honey is lingering….the floral distinction and grape has probably dissipated

Butiki Teas

This tea was harvested March 14, 2012. We do deal directly with Glenburn’s reps. The new First Flush will likely be in April since we do not pre-order as we like to sample first. This was a pretty mellow tea to begin with and the estate’s most expensive first flush.

Kashyap

thanks for sharing Butiki!

We are happy to :)

Ooh excited to try this one when I get home then…I picked this one up but haven’t had a chance yet to get in to it

sample of this one from stacy! I think i might prefer this one to the moonlight glenburn but i’m not entirely sure. Sadly i forgot to a) brew this side by side to compare and b) drink this while it was hot. Thus sort of ruining the sample. As a hot brewed, cooled tea this is refreshing with a hint of astringency and some faintly floral notes. Other than that, I can’t say much since work ended up really distracting me tonight. Soooo i’m going to call it quits and not ruin any other samples that i have.

Final count for the day of organising and getting my orders/samples from people – 287 though that includes a number of single cup sample sizes i should hopefully be able to finish off quickly this week :) YAY for not being over 100 and getting organised. Also mini grats for not really placing any orders in May…apart from the sloane mega uber never happens 50% off sale i had to take advantage of.

Kittenna

Aren’t you glad I didn’t shower you with tea samples?

Sil

Nt like I won’t be getting more from you later lol

TeaLady441

Woah! I was waaaay off. But that sounds like a pretty decent number, especially with so many future sipdowns! I’m down to 115 which is nice while it lasts, but I have about 4 boxes of swaps/samples coming in, as well as my Verdant order. It’s a fun game thoguh!

Sil

Yep it’s good though…I’m happy to still be under 300…was a little worried

I wish I liked Darjeeling teas more. They smell like fantastic, sour-sweet fruit and hay. There’s been a couple that I’ve enjoyed consistently, and a few instances, influenced by steep variability, where a particular sample wasn’t as abrasive as it was previously.

That latter is actually what happened with this Darjeeling. I haven’t enjoyed this one all too much, and was in no rush to make the last cup. Maybe the temperature was lower (around 180F) than it usually is, but it’s so mellow today, like a second steep! It tastes floral, with a bit of sweet fruit and sour citrus. The cup led to the trademark mouth puckering too.

This is so good! I was thinking of getting a variable temperature kettle for school, but sometimes it’s nice to do the guesswork and get lucky! It just shows me that some teas (puerh, chai) have very specific “settings” that need to be met before the “best” of them (for me) is brought out.

variable temperature kettles are awesome! I find I enjoy my tea more usually when I make it at the right temp lol

OMGsrsly

I’ve used my new kettle once, and I’m a convert. I tend to shy away from picky teas because I dislike it when I don’t get them right, or even just nearly right.

Sipdown! Thanks to Stacy for a sample of this one, so I can expand my very limited darjeeling knowledge.

This tea smells lovely and sweet. A bit grapey, as I’ve gathered is characteristic. The sweetness also reminds me of that caused by leafhoppers, e.g. in Gui Fei Oolong, etc. Flavourwise, I’d be hard-pressed to identify this as a black tea. It’s much more like… a non-oxidized Gui Fei, or something like that? It’s sweet, just the teensiest touch astringent, and kind of has a hay-y sort of flavour. Quite pleasant, but I’m not sure that it quite falls into the realm of tea I would want to drink often. It’s not bad, and certainly interesting to have tried, but there’s something about that leafhopper flavour that, instead of growing on me, is doing the opposite: I’m starting to find it unpleasant. Which is unfortunate as I have no shortage of such teas. Oh well! I definitely preferred the Glenburn Darjeeling Moonlight; I’ll have to dig out the last of my sample from Boxermama and finish it off to remind me how it tasted.

Maybe you just need a break from those sort of teas for a while?

I think I have some of this on the way. I ordered that sampler, and I can’t quite remember what all are coming in it. I’m very interested in the sampler; my knowledge of Darjeeling is even smaller, I’ve never had any ever. xD

Kittenna

Sadly, I haven’t even been drinking much of them lately. I’ll keep at it though; some days I find it more palatable than others. I think it’s because of a weird association I’m making between squishing ants and that flavour… and it’s hard to break things like that. There are a few other smells that I can’t handle, too, that associate with multiple things, some of which shouldn’t be in the least unpleasant. Sigh.

Yeah, this is maybe the third I’ve tried? :D I tried one from LiberTEAS a while back that was either too old, or I screwed it up. It wasn’t very good. Then I tried the first Butiki one in a swap, and it was amazing, so I ordered this as a sample with my last order. I plan to try some more, but I don’t think it will end up being a tea I drink often (unless they all taste like Glenburn Darjeeling Moonlight, because that was amazing.)

Will have to do a full review later on this wonderful 1st flush Darjeeling. I just finished my sample that Stacy sent. It is a chilly, rainy day in Atlanta and I am enjoying a delicious bowl of homemade soup which includes carrots, celery, sweet potatoes, garlic, kale, fresh parmesan and chicken. My husband found the recipe on the internet. I love homemade soup and tea on a rainy autumn day! I just wish I could spend the rest of the day checking out my new teas from Butiki instead of going to work. But if I don’t work, I won’t have any money for tea!

Oops, forgot to add this to the database. Thanks for adding it! Don’t you just love homemade soup? Last night I made a huge pot of my world famous veggie soup for my hubby since he was feeling sick.

Donna A

What a nice wife! Sounds like the perfect medicine for your husband, and hopefully you gave him his favorite tea as well. I’m sorry I didn’t put the picture in, but I’m glad to see you did. I am not that tech savvy.

Butiki Teas

Aw, thanks! He is pretty spoiled. I make him all sorts of tea but told him no sugar when he is sick, so he had our Creamy Eggnog sugarless and some genmaicha. Tonight I will boil him a pot of water with grated ginger for a good 30 minutes then add some tea at the end. No worries, its really easy for me since I have the original picture on my computer. :)

Butiki Teas

When he gets sick, I pamper him so much. I used to give him a bell to ring so that I would bring him whatever he needs but he abused that privilege so no more bell for him. Hahaha.

Donna A

You are funny Stacy. I’m not going to tell my husband about the bell idea! He’s the type you have to pretty much leave alone when he is sick, which is a little tough for me, since I’m an RN and my natural instinct is to be nurturing to sick people. BTW, I’ll have to try the Creamy Eggnog on my next order!

Butiki Teas

I am a nurturer too but there is a limit. The bell would go off every time I just settled in downstairs. Sometimes it was a legitimate request for water, food, tissues, etc but then he would also ring the bell for a hug, kiss, to talk, etc. After about 20 rings, I said this isn’t going to work out. Mmmm, I really recommend the Creamy Eggnog. Its one of my current favorites.

Smells fruity and floral when dry. After steeping, the leaves are predominantly green. Vegetal taste, very light and astringent. I’m happy to have tried this, but it confirms further to me that first flushes just aren’t my thing.

Not rating since I can’t compare this to other first flushes and have no way to say if this is a good one or not.

UPDATE: Continuing my way through this cup, I think I’ve narrowed down why first flushes aren’t for me. They are very reminiscent of green tea and green tea truly isn’t my thing.

My first first flush Darjeeling! Thank you to Stacy for the sample.

This seems so much like a green tea to me. I thought it was!

I won’t give this one a score, because I really have nothing to compare it to. It is not really my kind of tea with its floral, slightly bitter flavor. But, I’m glad I tried it!

Butiki Teas

You might be more into second flush Darjeelings. They are less floral. :)

Rachel J

Thanks Stacy!

Rachel J

I wonder why I got a bit of a bitter bite… Is that supposed to be part of the flavor profile of this tea? I followed the brewing instructions exactly. Hmmmmm…

Butiki Teas

Rachel-I don’ any bitterness from this but I have heard others describe Darjeelings as having a bit of astringency. If you had more, I would recommend lowering the water temperature. If you used the sample bag, as a measuring that might be my fault since I tend to add a little more than one samples worth since I noticed that most people don’t measure out their water.

Rachel J

No problem, just wondering! Yeah, I used the whole sample in exactly 8 ounces. Like I’ve said before, I seem to be really sensitive to astringency, but now I am starting to wonder if it could be my water?! NYC tap water is awesome and even so, I always run it through a faucet-mounted filter. BUT, even so, maybe I should do some taste tests with spring water some time.

Butiki Teas

Hmm, that’s an interesting theory. That might be worth looking into.

Backlog from Sunday.

While I’m tasting plain black teas, I thought I’d finish with this one. I like Darjeeling well enough, on the whole. Not as much as I like assam, but it’s definitely up there. I generally prefer first flush, but I’ve had a couple that aren’t, and they’ve been okay too. I gave this about three minutes in boiling water, and the liquor is a medium yellow-gold. The scent is quite perfumey, and a touch grassy.

To taste, this is beautifully smooth and delicate. There’s a very slight almost metallic tang, then a distinctive floral fruitiness, ending with a gentle muscatel note. No grassy notes, really, but that’s okay.

This is a tea that’s really easy to drink, and very moreish. Perfect for a warm summer evening, which is more or less what the day has turned into, despite it feeling decidedly autumnal earlier in the week. Another great tea from Butiki!

Darjeelings are growing on me, but I think I prefer the Giddipahar from Butiki to this one.

This is tasty, though. Don’t have much more to say than it’s a very darjeelingy. :)
