From Butiki Teas

Creamy Eggnog is part of our holiday series that encompasses a number of holidays from different religions. Many people might not think of eggnog as their number one choice for a Christmas flavor but Eggnog is particularly important in my family’s tradition of celebrating Christmas. Eggnog always marked the beginning of the Christmas season and was the last thing we would drink before we would try to go to sleep Christmas Eve. As a child, getting any sleep Christmas Eve would have been a miracle. There was always so much excitement and anticipation building. Creamy Eggnog pairs our buttery Organic Huangshan Mao Feng with a rich creamy eggnog flavor. The tea and flavor work well with each other and neither overshadows the other. This tea is sweet with a heavy cream and eggy quality. Add a little brown crystal sugar and the tea becomes extremely creamy, rich, and very much like eggnog. Some vanilla notes become pronounced and so do the egg notes. We added safflower for a touch of red for a festive Christmas colored tea.

Ingredients: Organic Chinese Tea, Safflower, Organic Natural Flavoring

I cannot even express how much this is not for me.

I’m not going to rate it, because I imagine that for someone who likes egg nog, this tea would be amazing. Sadly, I am not one of those people. I did drink the whole cup, and it was, as are all of Stacy’s teas, very well done. It amazes me how perfectly she can craft her teas.

I wish I liked egg nog, because I imagine this would have been incredible if I did.

What type of tea is that? I’ve been wanting to try it.

It’s a green tea, I believe.

I really want to try this one, I’ve heard it’s very well done.

I can’t get over how much my palate has changed the past several months. The first time I had this — I think it was as a sample on my first Butiki order — I remember that until I added some sugar I literally couldn’t taste anything. Now I taste more flavor straight than I did back then with added sugar!

The leaves are pretty Christmasy, green with red bits. The aroma of the dry leaf is intoxicatingly sweet, almost like smelling frosting.

It starts off with that sea-weedy flavor typical of green tea and then the sweet and creamy taste kicks in right at the end. While I’m not sure I’d say this tastes like eggnog exactly, it’s wonderfully sweet and I could definitely imagine craving this around the holiday season. It’s very vanilla-y which is a good thing, as I love vanilla. This is one of the very few green teas that I actually quite enjoy. :)

Ermergerd!!! First I want to send a big thank you to Stacy for being so nice and accommodating my anal organizational request :) I appreciate it!!
As for the tea please see my first word above. This is beyond delicious. The at-first subtle vanilla notes become more pronounced as it cools. And I do detect a creamy egg taste too! Beautiful colour once steeped. I cannot say enough good things about this tea! My only wish is that this tea will be available all year long.

You’re quite welcome! Well, this one might be available all year. We will definitely be selling it until summer but if there are still enough sales we will keep it throughout the year. The longest it might be removed is 3-4 months.

I received my massive black friday order from Butiki this morning! Despite having limited experience with eggnog (I can’t have dairy so my first and only time having it was yesterday when my roommate brought home some coconut milk based eggnog), I picked this one out first because of its delicious smell. And it is just as good as it smells. So creamy and slightly sweet with the perfect balance of spices. The flavoring really pairs perfectly with the Huangshan Mao Feng base.

I have since gave into my cravings and made another cup and my roommate had one too. This is completely addictive.

Creamy eggnog tea, wonderful with a touch of brown sugar in it. A nice treat to have on a cold Canadian winter evening.

The steeping scent of this is confusing my brain. It smells like eggnog but also delicious! I do not care for eggnog at all. I’ve noticed some people have been saying it doesn’t really taste like eggnog or it’s bang-on eggnog.

It’s definitely creamy. I’m not getting too much of an eggnog taste here. I’m tempted to add the brown sugar recommended to see what happens.

Update: Doing a second steep this afternoon to see what happens. Very similar to the first steep, with less flavour. I get an egg-y taste but not necessarily eggnog. It’s interesting, but I don’t think it’s for me.

Yep, that was pretty much my opinion, too. But I can totally see why other people love it so much, it’s very well done.

Alright. So it’s finals time again which means I needed to break the bank and restock my cupboard. (otherwise I’d be found in the bathtub with a toaster and a beer)… but I digress. Ahem.

Needless to say, I splurged and got a sweet black friday deal from butiki teas. This little gem was included and I am pumped to have this on my shelf for the holiday season.

The first thing I did was stuff my nose into the bag. holy eggnog batman! this couldn’t be more on point in terms of scented teas. I started creeping on the tea leaves, and was a bit nervous about a green tea base for such a creamy holiday beverage tea. After I sipped it, I started to doubt myself. There was no trace of vegetal flavors anywhere… how suspicious. Could it be a white tea base….? i hate white teas…

Apparently I was right the first time- it’s a green base, but I’m amazed at how well this tea is blended. I added no sugar, and it was a sweet and smooth dessert tea that made me think of sugared plums, christmas cookies, and other happy holiday memories. The green base tastes nothing like a typical green, all you can taste is the buttery deliciousness bathing your tongue. The taste after sipping was reminiscent of powdered sugar and cookie dough- but not overwhelmingly sweet. The flavor stayed rather consistent through a second steep, so I’m a huge fan.

I also may have put the second cup in a griswold moose glass…. if you’ve seen national lampoon’s christmas vacation- you get me. just add a dash of half and half and it looks and smells like you’re drinking the real thing… alcohol optional. don’t judge me.

overall- a great holiday tea, and a great new replacement for my sugar cookie tea.

(I must confess I have a weakness for dessert teas and vanilla, so this review may reflect that. plan accordingly and double knot your laces before sipping.)

and for now, the toaster will stay out of the bathtub. happy holidays and stay alive!

I remember finals week all too well. Instead of going the normal route, I spent 10+ years in college. I can’t imagine being under that much stress constantly again. Tea was my one saving grace. Good luck on your finals!

Eggnog (well, more like Silk Nog… the real deal’s a bit rich for me) is one of my favorite parts of winter, and I couldn’t imagine how the flavor and texture could possibly be translated into tea form. As it turns out, they’re not, quite. I’m not getting a true eggnog flavor, but I am reminded of sweet wintry treats—which is close enough, I think. The flavoring is reminding me a lot of Celestial Seasonings’ Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride herbal, which is one of my favorite holiday blends. The flavors are fairly subtle, but they’re definitely present.

All good so far. But I’m not entirely sold on the way the sugar-cookie flavors are working with the Huangshan Mao Feng. While it is pleasingly creamy, it’s also quite vegetal. I know that’s intentional, and while I see that a lot of people enjoy the interplay between the sweet and savory flavors in this tea, this particular combination of base and flavoring is not quite right for me.

I think I would’ve enjoyed this more with a different base – a white or an oolong (like the base used for Butiki’s Maple Pecan Oolong, maybe?) seem like strong contenders. Still, I’m glad to have had the chance to try this creative tea – thanks to Shelley_Lorraine for the sample!

Quick note & then back to work!

I requested a sample of this one with my last order because the description lists Huangshan Mao Feng – the same base that’s used in Potato Pancakes & Apple Sauce. This has a similar thick mouthfeel, but it doesn’t come across as ‘starchy,’ like it does in the PP&AS. (Which is good, because that would be weird in an eggnog tea.)

Got this as a sample in my Butiki order. Thanks, Stacy! I unfortunately had the same experience I had with the pistachio ice cream tea in that the vegetal note was strong for me. I did get a custardy vanilla note, and even a hint of nutmeg. I got more as it cooled. I would have liked more spice though.
