Our Premium Taiwanese Assam is sourced from Yuchih Township in Nantou County, Taiwan. Assam bushes were brought to Taiwan in the early twentieth century but have since been refined by the Taiwan Research and Extension Station. The long dark chocolate-colored leaves produce a sweet fruity aroma. This malty tea has rich chocolate notes with notes of cinnamon, clove, and raisins.

Ingredients: Taiwanese Black Tea

Recommended Brew Time: 3 minutes
Recommended Amount: 2 teaspoons of tea for 8oz of water
Recommended Temperature: 212 F (boiling)

Sad sipdown.

This has always tasted like marshmallows to me. Not the artificial, powdery Pascall kind, but the all-natural handmade ones which are super expensive from a boutique patisserie.

Slightly crushed leaves at the bottom of this old, old packet. Made for a bit of an oversteeped taste but I just added a splash of water and got it tasting like it should (minus the effect of age).

Will I ever see its likeness again?

Thank you again to Stacy for adding this sample to my Butiki order! This one is great, as advertised. I’ve never tasted a fruity Assam before. It’s not overly fruity, but that characteristic is very apparent, along with the fact that it is not bitter at all, and a bit lighter than I expected. The Assam maltiness is there, but it’s not as dominant as for Indian Assams…Assam Assams, I guess (:P), and it mixes nicely with the fruitiness of the tea. Overall, a very enjoyable tea.

Happy full moon day. I got this sample from Marzipan. It smells nicely malty, with some cocoa. The flavour is more on the fruity side, and maybe slightly floral. Glad I finally got to try this one. Really wish I had more.

Wow, this tea. I’m not even sure how to do it justice… Fortunately, plenty of Steepster users have already described it so well! The first time I steeped it, I couldn’t believe how fruity the aroma was. I even waved my cup under my sister’s nose, and she thought it was some kind of berry-flavored tea. Nope, I told her. Just one of the most delicious black teas I’ve ever tried.

For me, Premium Taiwanese Assam tastes really fruity at first— with notes of plum and berries and maybe a hint of raisin—and then mid-sip, a mouth-watering chocolate note shows up and takes over. Even the empty cup smells amazing when I’m finished. If you like teas with fruity and/or chocolate notes, you’ll love this. It’s smooth and sweet and pretty much perfect. I’ll be ordering more very soon!

So now that I’m under 100 teas, I seem to be going on a Butiki rampage without even noticing it… This is a much-beloved tea that I hadn’t tried yet so I figured I should get it over with and see whether it lives up to the hype! The leaves are the lovely creepy tree branch variety – large, long, and twisty, and jet black. The dry scent is sweet in an almost caramel way with some honey and a bit of stonefruit or something similar. I wish there was a weight parameter for this tea, as it’s extremely hard to measure in teaspoons. I think I may have overleafed but it’s hard to tell having never tried it before…

The brewed aroma still has those strong sugary caramel notes, along with sweet potato and a bit of dark fruitiness. Happily for me, I can also taste caramelized brown sugar and a bit of caramel, especially in the end of the sip and aftertaste. Yums! This is a very rich tea, with nice dark dried fruit flavor along with some molasses-like richness. There is a point in the sip where it’s almost bitter but not quite, I’m not sure if this is from overleafing or just part of the dark cocoa flavor that’s also present.

Overall, this is tasty but I’m not convinced that it warrants its high rating. I definitely enjoyed the Taiwanese Wild Mountain Black much more. Ah well, to each her own. :)

Tea of the morning. Oh, but I love this tea. There are so many wonderful flavors and Assam-y notes, but this isn’t an in-your-face Assam. It’s quieter, more dignified in its delivery of the caffeine I need so badly. Delicious.

This is a happy making tea. The dark, almost stick-like leaves make it a bit hard to measure. They were still tight after one steep, but oh, that almost sweet assam odor coming off the wet leaves promised a fine cup, and didn’t disappoint. The first steep had almost a caramel nose. There was no significant sweetness and no tannin, just smooth, full tea with maybe a hint of vanilla(?) and the richness of fresh bread. The second steep unfolded the leaves and was just a bit flatter, but I thought I got some subtle chocolate tones. Interestingly, both steeps are not so good as they cooled. They got kind of, I don’t know, ashy? No, maybe just a bit of tannin. No matter, I’ll just brew up another hot cup and thoroughly enjoy it.
