From Butiki Teas

Our Premium Taiwanese Assam is sourced from Yuchih Township in Nantou County, Taiwan. Assam bushes were brought to Taiwan in the early twentieth century but have since been refined by the Taiwan Research and Extension Station. The long dark chocolate-colored leaves produce a sweet fruity aroma. This malty tea has rich chocolate notes with notes of cinnamon, clove, and raisins.

Ingredients: Taiwanese Black Tea

Thank you Stacy for this sample. I brewed according to the suggested parameters of 4mins. A very nice black tea! I don’t have a refined enough palate to explain or tell the difference between this and some other black teas I have tried:(
It has such good review here that I thought I would be able to taste the differences but I can’t :(
Will have to try some more of this later on in my tea “journey”
All in all a very nice cup of tea though!

I have quite a bit of Butiki tea left and I think every last drop of it has been ruined :( Several of the unopened packages, that at the time I didn’t have enough bags to seal the tea in were stored next to a rose flavored tea. I have tried 3 of the remaining teas, including this one, and they are all contaminated with the rose. I am shedding lots of tears. A hard lesson learned for me about tea storage. Even for a short stent, teas taste can be greatly affected by how and where it stored.

Oh my, I had a similar experience recently, and likewise had to toss all 4+ oz of my favourite Butiki tea. It was very, very sad. :(

Marzipan

Rose is nice in tea, maybe it will be good but different?

tea-sipper

AH i’m so sorry.

TeaExplorer

Yeah, had the same issue with my Butiki teas. I bought them when I was new to loose leaf and left them in the original bags. A hard lesson, but it stuck with me.

Glorious tea. Like eating cotton candy and chasing it with the best Assam. There’s an upgrade? How is that possible?

SO surprised to like this tea. Usually I go to Taiwanese teas for Oolongs or go to India for assams…what a funny switch!

Very bold, chocolatey carmel taste. A hint of vanilla here and there.

BOLD, is the best word to use. yes, Bold.

I like their teas usually, and this tea is no exception. A great tea. Thank you

Assam has always been my favorite black tea and this one is astoundingly good. I was quite surprised at the natural sweetness of this tea, almost like maraschino cherries and a bit of sweet almond. Multiple infusions in my trusty gaiwan revealed sweet malty Assam goodness with little to no bitter notes or astringency, even at 3+ minute brew times with freshly boiled water. Remarkable! This tea is so very solid and consistent, it embodies everything I love about strong bodied black teas without any of the negatives and its fairly priced for the high level of quality. A luxurious daily drinker for sure!

This is very very good black tea, I have encountered maybe one or two other black that I could “rate” higher. Easy 95 here, will be buying more of this!

First of all, great customer service from this company.

Man this tea smells good in the bag, has a very clean, fresh character.

On steeping it has the classic tea scent, yet it also has notes that remind me of pumpkin, honey, brown sugar, and general vegetal scents.

Taste: Not being the biggest fan of Assam teas, I was skeptical before I tried it, but this is the best Assam I’ve had thus far. Actually, this is one of the best teas I’ve had in general. Smooth and malty. A bit of natural sweetness. Just a slight hint of vegetal and mineral notes. Pretty clean finish, although now that I’m done with the cup there is a nice lingering aftertaste that makes me want more.

It doesn’t need sugar, but I made a second steep and added some out of curiosity, and the tea takes on a nice roasted caramel taste.

This Assam lacks the astringency I like and has a slightly sweet and earthy/woodsy aroma. It’s a good tea but if you like the maltiness of Assams then look elsewhere.
I do love the fact that the leaves are whole and not chopped up which, in my opinion, says quality but the fragrance is lacking.

If you are looking for a little more astringency and maltiness, I recommend steeping the tea for 5 minutes. We tend to set brewing instructions so that there is minimal astringency. :)

Wow. I am rating this tea over 90. I don’t do that often. This is a big tea – I would not drink it every day. I like to drink it slowly. It has a floral part to it that I can feel in my sinuses when I drink it. I have never had anything quite like it. Very unique. It is a little more expensive, but worth it. Very nice. Can’t wait to try it out on some friends who are not expecting it.
