From Verdant Tea

This blend was born out of a special collaboration between Verdant Tea and local yoga practitioners with the goal of creating a tea to help yoga studio clients leave the weight of the world behind them and prime them for the focusing experience of yoga. With the cleansing and sweet upper notes of peppermint and spearmint, the lingering spice and thickness of Holy Basil and a base of solid burdock, this blend has been a great success. This tea rises to the challenge of being both comforting and cleansing, making it a popular flu season go-to. The Holy Basil Spa Blend is also great iced, or brewed up as a concentrated shot to mix with sparkling water and a touch of honey.

Ingredients: Peppermint, Spearmint, Holy Basil, Fennel, Burdock Root, Ginger, Licorice Root

Yummy! Mint + fennel are the brightest in this one, imo, and while I usually don’t like fennel , here it does not seem out of place :) Very light and refreshing. I like it!

P.S. I surely was not prepared for the xplosion of smell when I opened the container O_O It’s like someone flattened and left to dry a heap of fresh herbs :) Almost overwhelmingly intoxicating.

UPD: 7 brewings in and tehre si still flavor left :)

I finished up this last of my little bit I ordered from Verdant Tea as a iced tea. It was really good – very cool and refreshing. If I was feeling under the weather this would be the tea I would want on hand.

Well, I seem to have gone full on nocturnal, I don’t really mind too much since it means I get to miss the hellish day time heat (not that I sleep very well either way, ugh, I hate summer) but it limits what I can do because someone has to go and be all diurnal! Jerk. It is something I have done since I was a wee thing, much to the annoyance of my poor mom who really tried to keep my schedule sane, I just end up nocturnal(ish) during the hot times of the year. I still have my fingers crossed for a mild and stormy summer, but if not, at least there is that research that states drinking hot things keeps you cool!

You know what is sad? I have not looked at Verdant Tea in a long while, I mean really, I think it has been around a year, not really sure why either. Verdant Tea was one of the first tea companies I ordered from back when I made the leap to buying tea online, I discovered them while hunting down Oolongs! But today’s tea is not an Oolong, it is Holy Basil Spa Blend, one of their Alchemy Blends , which combines Burdock Roots (Gobo!) Peppermint, Spearmint, Holy Basil (name drop) and Fennel seeds. The aroma of the rather refreshing sounding drink is intensely minty, which is expected with two different kinda of mint. With these minty notes comes sweet fennel notes, slightly savory notes of holy basil (which is also a tiny bit peppery) and a slight note of earthiness at the finish. This herbal tea is very balanced, even with all the mint, the other notes reign it it, kinda like that one rambunctious kid at a family reunion that is actually quite tolerable to be around once the other people get it to chill out.

Brewing the herbs, the tea lair was super aromatic afterwards, which is always nice. The aroma is pleasantly sweet and very minty, there is of course herbaceous notes of basil and fennel, and a tiny note of earthy roots, but mostly there is sweet mint. The liquid is only moderately minty, instead the green and herbaceous notes of holy basil really shine, they are slightly pepper and a touch savory. It blends well with the sweet notes of fennel and mild mint.

You know, I was surprised, it turned out to be more savory than sweet, usually teas with fennel tend to be pretty sweet, but not this one. It starts out with a powerful burst of herbaceous and slightly peppery Holy Basil, there is also a tiny hint of lettuce, Holy Basil is a complex smelling plant. After the initial savory burst it switches over to cooling minty sweetness which lingers only in cooling sensation before the Holy Basil takes back over, with a slightly earthy note from the burdock. This tea is very refreshing, the taste reminds me more of a healing broth to drink when you have a rebellious stomach rather than a tea, and I am totally ok with that!

It may be because I’m enjoying this in my comfy chair with a bag of frozen peas tucked under my painful, twingey, raw-nervey lower back, but I can just feel neck, head, and shoulders un-knotting as I sip this herbal blend.

You don’t have to sell me on tulsi—it’s my tea tranquilizer of choice—-but the ginger and fennel pleasantly round off the lemon sharpness of the tulsi. Licorice is present, but not annoying.

Thanks again, Nicole; this was well timed!

Had this tea after lunch today. I really enjoy mint tea, and that is mostly what I got from this blend. When the tea was freshly brewed the fennel stood out quite a bit at the end of the sip. As the tea cooled a little the flavors, mint, fennel and ginger, definitely blended together well. This is a very enjoyable herbal.

Lewis & Clark Traveling Teabox – Tea #27
An odd little blend that just seems to work for me! It’s almost like a chai made with tulsi. It’s spicy but I can definitely taste that holy basil flavor I love (like green beans). The dry blend has a strong spearmint fragrance but it’s almost lost in the flavor. There is a cooling from the peppermint at the end of the sip. Dry scent: spearmint. Flavor: peppermint. Very smooth from the licorice root. I love the cooling with the spices! I can say this one is a great blend from Verdant! Everything works in harmony.

This is one I went back and forth on trying. There were a lot of flavors I liked in the ingredients, but there were a few I wasn’t so sure about. In the end, I decided against trying it because I had so many others I really wanted to try.

I have no idea what holy basil tastes like, but the fact that it’s called “Spa Blend” sounded interesting to me. This tea is a mixture of very small pieces of herbs – looks like mint and fennel seed with chunks of something else. Dry scent is mostly mint to me, though I can smell the fennel a little bit. Again, weird instructions, so I did boiling for 5 minutes since it’s herbal.

Brewed, it smells like mint and honey. The taste is mostly mint to me, but there’s also something in here that tastes similar to honey to me, but without the sweetness. I can taste the fennel, but only just slightly. I don’t know what holy basil tastes like so I can’t comment on that really. :P I can’t say that I taste burdock root, or at least it doesn’t taste like the burdock root tea I had earlier. Pretty good, but I wish the other ingredients stood up to the mint more. :)

No, I haven’t. :P But good to know!

Stephanie

We grow tulsi at home to use in Thai food. It smells crazy fresh!
