From DAVIDsTEA

Peace and love

Our deliciously fruity blend has its roots in the 1960s, when every cool hippie was growing kombucha. Today, hipsters are again promoting this fermented tea for its delicious taste and good vibes. We’ve combined it with oolong, mango, pineapple and safflowers to make it taste like a golden ray of psychedelic sunshine. Yeah.

Ingredients: Oolong tea, mango, pineapple, Kombucha Powder, safflower petals, artificial flavouring*.

Allergens: Gluten-free wheat starch

I am such a loser. I spent the entire school year annoyed that I never had the time to do anything else other than write papers and attend symposia, and now that I have had nearly a week to do whatever I wanted before meeting up with my supervisor to get the thesis proposal ball rolling, I just wasted it all sitting around home. Tomorrow is my meeting so say goodbye to spare time? I blame it on my new toy and shoddy weather which has prevented me from going to the beach, Butchart Gardens and what not.

I was a little wary of this tea. Love oolongs but the flavour combination sounded a little too overdone, and I imagined juice crystal-like qualities with every sip. The dry leaf is primarily mango, so I went with a cold brew.

Sure enough, it is on the artificial side. The base is fresh but gets a little bitter towards the end of the glass. The strangest thing about it is at the end of every sip, a mango peach silken tofu flavour envelops my taste buds. It’s exactly like that dessert tofu you can buy at the grocery store.

That said, I’m afraid my hunches were right about this oolong. I’m starting to lose faith/interest in DT again.

CHAroma

Butchart Gardens?

Fjellrev

Yeah, it’s one of the most beautiful places on the planet. :)

http://www.butchartgardens.com/

CHAroma

Wow! You weren’t kidding. That place is gorgeous!!

JustJames

must say i’m in the same boat… (also the same island) as you…. david’s teas is one of the fastest growing canadian companies and sadly it really shows. they’re not keeping up with quality controls or creative demand.

OMGsrsly

Pretty much every tea store I’ve been into has said that DavidsTea (and to a lesser extent Teavana) has been a boon for their business. So that’s good, right? :)

TeaLady441

They ate a great starter company for people looking for a friendly and convenient intro to tea.

JustJames

true… though i began with teavana. i admit i hold a bit of a grudge against david’s teas because i have food sensitivities and they haven’t been as diligent as they need to be for their customers.

Fjellrev

It’s definitely true that these bigger companies are helping out the smaller ones in a way. It’s getting more people into tea in general. But I’ll admit that when DT opened a store near me, I thought it was overrated even then. The only thing that traps me into giving them more money is the 10g allowance. It’s convenient and I don’t feel like I’m putting all my eggs in one basket by having to blindly purchase 50g or even 100g.

And nice to see another Steepster on the Island!

OMGsrsly

How do you mean, James? My BFF is severely allergic to mint, and this month especially it’s been a bit of a trial. Thankfully the local stores have been really good about helping her even when she can’t come in.

JustJames

@OMGsrsly… everyone has a different set of parameters and sensitivities. i have an auto immune disease which, in my case, had included a fabulous case of broad spectrum sensitivities. for the most part i know what they are and i handle the issue with a healthy dose of literacy— reading before i put it in my mouth.

this is where my problem with david’s teas occurred. i got a free sample from headquarters in montreal… not something i would normally buy for myself, but hey… it’s the thought that counts. i dug in. i felt rotten. i read the ingredients. no issue. figured it was random. it happened the next time i tried the sample.

i decided to look up the tea here on steepster. DIFFERENT INGREDIENTS WERE LISTED!!! the list here had something in it that explained what was going on.

i won’t say that it’s a store or an employee problem, it’s a diligence level that isn’t being met at a corporate level.

please keep in mind this is just my opinion after a very frustrating experience. i am very glad that your friend has been given good direction.

Fjellrev

I’m so sorry that happened to you, JustJames. Did you contact them about it? That is a very serious issue and they need to straighten things out like that. Show a little more consistency and accuracy with information. I’m so lucky that I don’t have allergies or an auto immune disease. I can’t imagine how extra careful you need to be.

OMGsrsly

Oh geez that’s absolutely terrible. I’m glad you’re ok. Just FYI, tea stores to be careful with are TWG/The Urban Tea Merchant, Murchie’s and Granville Island Tea. The first two do not list ingredients as far as I’ve been able to tell, although Murchie’s sometimes has them available. And Granville Island has different ingredients on their website and in store. I try to get ingredient listings for everything, just in case.

JustJames

i have to be diligent is all, i am careful where i eat and where i buy… but life gets alot more complicated if things are not clearly AND CONSISTENTLY listed. this borders on a rant, which i don’t want to do to your awesome post… as a company you do not get to have multiple ingredients lists in multiple locations. OR if you choose that option, you do not get money from me.

i do buy from DT, but it is very limited. they don’t list the ingredients in their artificial flavouring because it is considered proprietary (it is usually that stuff that gives me problems).

no, i did not contact the company about it, i just absorbed it into ‘buyer beware’. the reason i got the sample was as an apology from the company regarding an incident that happened when i was there one day.

i don’t know if DTs has an incognito presence on here or not, but i wish they more visible like verdant, butiki and teavivre.

argh! incendiare… sorry! another essay!

good luck on your thesis proposal! maybe just present it in ancient norse and have the prof nod and smile? lol. i’m sure you’ll sail through…

Fjellrev

Still, that must be a super inconvenience for you to have to triple check everything, especially when some companies aren’t consistent with the information they provide. But on the bright side, you’re not really missing out on the artificially-flavoured ones anyway!

I know DT has an account and announces/writes reviews of their new teas, but don’t think they have any reps reading our reviews and providing feedback.

Thanks, I need all the luck I can get with my proposal! First I need to read and listen to data in the lab to see if I can even do my topic. Aye.

JustJames

really? haven’t seen them here anywhere…. they are wasting a valuable insight resource if they aren’t paying attention to the reviews on here. (my opinion)

Fjellrev

They seem to write a tasting note for new teas: http://steepster.com/DAVIDsTEA

Maybe they’re here more for promotion than anything else? They appear to be following quite a few Steepsterites but I’m not sure if they comment on their reviews.

This tea is good but, I don’t think I love it enough to say I’d necessarily want to repurchase it when it’s done. With ingredients like oolong tea, mango, and pineapple, I thought it would be a love at first taste, but there’s something in this that I don’t care for. Maybe it’s the safflower petals or I suppose it could be the Kombucha powder, since I don’t really know what that tastes like on its own? I’m not sure what it is, but whatever it is, it mutes the fruitiness a bit too much for my liking. I have at least enough to make one more pot of this, so it still has a chance to change my mind.

Nik

Have you ever tried any kind of kombucha? I wasn’t sure if you meant in general or just within this context. I used to want to try it (like I want to try any tea-related thing) but I have an aversion to the word “fermented” (and all that it signifies). When I read the description (it was a bottled tea in the supermarket) I just put it back on the shelf.

(Tangent: imagine my ewwness, then, when I read that the red rooibos I love so much is fermented… I’m trying to pretend I never learned that.)

canadianadia

I’ve never tried kombucha, in fact, before having this tea, I had never even heard of it. When I brought this tea home I Googled it to find out more about it…intriguing.

I don’t think I’m turned off by the thought of fermentation, although oddly enough I’m not really a huge lover of red rooibos. I don;t think it’s that though, because I have no problem eating yogurt or drinking wine :) If I saw it fermenting in front of me I might change my tune though lol

Nik

Oh, good point. I love yoghurt. I think my issue is that there’s a very particular flavour I associate with it, like apple cider that’s a bit…off. Blech.

canadianadia

Ahhh, yes, I’m not fond of that apple cider taste int teas either. When I have this tea next time, I’ll have to pay attention if that is the flavor I’m not liking in it.

Far out and thank you to my friend IndigoBloom flower child for this cool sample

This whole review is the rambling of an old woman. If you hate that sort of thing, do not read on!

Finally a tea that has some history (Kombucha and the hippie part) to have some fun with! The Haight in 1967! (Haight Ashbury San Francisco) Was really wierd! My best friend had moved there and when I went the 50 miles from San Jose to visit…well…I had been to a “Love In at Stanford”, and a “Sit In” at my Collage, and a meeting with “H. Rap Brown” (look it up) but this was a mind blowing freaky place! Even then my senses said DANGER! The thought of taking drugs around a bunch of strangers where anyone could do whatever they wanted to with you…well…it wasn’t for me! Pretty much that’s what it looked like on the streets and at my friend Kay’s place. A little girl around the corner from my house got hooked up with Charles Manson at that time in the City. Her name was Susan Atkins. I remember her way before the evil happened. Old memories.

Anyway, I had a lot of pain in my bones last night and had to go back to sleep this morning to catch up. The Kombucha called to me…hey Bonnie…let’s boogie on down memory lane and groove to the 60’s beat again! Cool! Far out! I could dig that!

http://youtu.be/cvWjIgiUIw4 …Mamas and the Papas Are you Going to San Francisco

I steeped this tea a long time…6 minutes and it’s delicious! I love pineapple! My review on the flavor is going to be short and SWEET!
This is full and buttery, not a thin fruit tea but naturally sweet and ripe. Happy to say that hot or cold this does not change character! Lovely cup to ice or drink hot which means you can have it year around in the cupboard and delight in it any way you want to have it.
This is a flavored oolong and I would have on hand because it isn’t fussy. Great every day, dependable tea!

(FYI I think I’m the only one in the Bay Area of my generation that did not do drugs! Instead I became a Vista Volunteer and went to the East Coast during the Civil Rights Era. I did however, wear mini shirts and platform shoes and looked like a hooker!)
http://youtu.be/ntLsElbW9Xo This last one is a classic 60’s protest song by Barry Maguire called The Eve of Distruction. He came to my home…(actually we were friends long ago) and got there before me one night and when I arrived the house was full of people and he was just sitting on the couch playing the guitar…some guy was washing my dishes. This was after I was married with children in the 70’s.

ScottTeaMan

Great reviw Bonnie-and a good song. :))

ScottTeaMan

It’s funny you’re talking about that era. This song is a remake, but this is the look. This chick really has the look…….and she can sing…….so groovy, I’m diggin’ it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6atUODsWGs&feature=related

Bonnie

Right on ScottTeaMan! Was that Leslie Uggums…? Cool look! I added another tune by an old friend at the end…Barry Maguire.

ScottTeaMan

That hipster chick is Gayle McCormick.

Bonnie

No, the announcer!

ScottTeaMan

OOhhhh,,,,,,now that you mentioned it, I thought she sounded very fimiliar. Not sure but she does sound familiar.

Bonnie

If you ever watched Roots, she was Kizzie (Kissie?) and a fine singer.

Indigobloom

Right on dude!! :P
Good song choice…

ScottTeaMan

I was very young and do remember ROOTS, but now I have to see it again.

Drunk From Tea

Wow, you can really learn a lot about a stranger over a cup of tea… or a tea rating (:

Bonnie

When you’re my age you have nothing to hide.

Special Thanks to Amanda for this one!

I’ve been called a Hippie (a drug-free one, might I add) on more than one occasion…so…here-goes!

This smells wonderful! Mango/Peach/Orange-like. This infuses to an orange-brown. There are some floaties – but – I can handle it!

Sure…this tastes like the fruits listed – mango, peach, etc…but here’s what I find interesting…perhaps my own little twist that I don’t think anyone has mentioned yet in their tasting notes and if they did and I missed it I am sorry!

This reminds me of a Fruity-Mango Chutney! The texture, the taste, the way it lingers, the fruits IN it! It’s really very nice! It has a GRAND flavor.

I really like this!

TeaBrat

It’s grooooovy!

Bonnie

Love it when this comes up! FAR OUT!

Scott B

Might as well fire up the Mystery Machine!

Thank you Indigobloom for this sample! Everyone probably knows by now Im not a big DT fan but this is one of my absolute favs from DT! As an oolong its not all that … I mean there are far better oolongs out there BUT this tea offers a sweet and yet tart but not TOO tart yummiess, no scummy oily top coat I get with many of DT’s blends, tropical flavors abound, I do agree with other reviewers that there is a peachy flavor to it even though there is no tea in the ingredient list, I taste the mango, but not so much the pineapple but the blend of all the fruits is perfect! I am sure this would be excellent iced but its soothing and yummy hot tonight! This would perhaps even make a nice drink blend – add some rum perhaps? I don’t drink anymore “oh no no no I don’t drink no more” some of you may remember that song, although I changed one word…I digress …. YUM YUM YUM!
If I were ever going to place a DT order I would get this. Thank you Indigobloom for a GENEROUS sample – I have enough to make this again sometime! I am sure I will!

Indigobloom

yay, we have a hit!! I think I need to make some tomorrow… while I listen to some classic Winehouse!

Azzrian

Sounds like a plan!! :)

Kashyap

Thought Kombucha was a live, lightly fermented liquid beverage (Wiki : Kombucha is an effervescent tea-based beverage that is often consumed for its anecdotal health benefits or medicinal purposes. Kombucha is available commercially and can be made at home by fermenting tea using a visible, solid mass of yeast and bacteria which forms the kombucha culture, often referred to as 酵母 (koubo, lit. “yeast mother”, see etymology for disambiguation with 昆布, kombu, kelp). How can they name it after such? Is it probiotic? seems misleading…

Azzrian

I have no earthly idea honestly. I have recently seen these Kombucha brew kits popping up for sale online and a couple of threads on here about brewing it but I have no personal idea what it is, other than what you just pasted above and something Bonnie posted in her review of this same tea about it being really popular with the hippies lol.
You may be on to something here though about it being misleading!

Thanks to my tea pal Indigobloom for this sample!

Is this tea perfect for San Francisco? Hippy-dippy and kinda fruity? I’m about to find out. Speaking of fruity, I have a fruit fly infestation right now which is such a drag — I’ll have to take these leaves out to the compost immediately after I’m done! After doing a quick read of the package, I used my small Finium teacup and filter and went with 180F for 5 minutes.

My cup ended up being a medium orange and smells very fruity! The flavor is incredibly peachy and pineapple-y. It’s kind of hard to taste the oolong underneath here but it makes a good foil for the fruit. I actually like those fizzy kombucha drinks even though they are expensive. This has the slight aftertaste of one of those, it’s a fermented almost beer like quality. I didn’t know you could even get powdered kombucha, so that was interesting to discover.

When you buy a fresh kombucha drink it’s $4 a pop, so I was thinking you could mix this tea with some fizzy water and have a reasonable substitute for a lot less money. I wonder if it still has the same health benefits as the fresh tea? This would be good iced, too.

I’ve never been the biggest David’s Tea fan, but this had me scanning their website for the price. I might need some of this in the future, but then again I have a ton of flavored tea I still need to get through. Are they ever going to open up a David’s Tea in California?

It’s a nice fun, fruity flavored kinda deal. I think I’m going to try cold brewing the rest of it overnight. Me likey. Thanks IB!

Indigobloom

hehe SO glad you liked this one. It was a choice between this and Long Life Oolong. They’re very similar but oh soooo good :)

TeaBrat

I liked it! Sadly there’s no hippies in Haight-Ashbury anymore, just chain stores and houses that cost 1 mil!

Bonnie

Yep! Good stuff! You can still find hippies in Berkeley and Santa Cruz and then there’s the mountain towns …shhhhh scary places!

Kittenna

I hate fruit flies!!! The only good thing is that their lives are so short, if you are really diligent about removing any possible food sources, they go away reasonably quickly. Last year we had problems with both fruit flies (downstairs, kitchen area) and fungus gnats (upstairs, apparently breeding in the sink drain). It was gross. Still see the odd one, but I think they’re from outside now.

Also, I bet they will open up a DT in California :P Looks like they’re expanding reasonably quickly!

I’ve been wanting oolong all week! And this is the one I have not had in a while. With this cold, it just did not seem fair to try any of the oolongs I have that I have not truly tried yet.

My poor nose is stuffing up faster than I can empty it and I am FREEZING! God I wish there were meds in the house to take the stuffiness away and let me get back to sleep – I just hope this tea is helpful!

Cattibrie

Sorry you aren’t feeling well. Hope you feel better soon.

Winter Salo

I hope the tea helps and you start feeling better really soon. :)

MaddHatter

I would love to feel better soon, the illness is not helping with the break-up situation.

Winter Salo

That sucks. Being sick really does make everything worse. :(

Plunkybug

Did it help? I like this tea, especially mixed with some Toasted Walnut.

MaddHatter

I am still reserved on the Toasted Walnut… it was far too bitter for me.

Plunkybug

Bitter? Really? Interesting. I find that the pineapple and other nuts balance it all out, though the walnuts are allegedly bitter. That said, I am a sugar adder, so that usually helps bitterness. If it doesn’t I dilute the tea a bit.

Meandering out and about Toronto`s Queen St. E for the Jazz fest I went into DAVIDs. They were sampling Happy Kombucha. I was there to refill Love Tea #7 and upon trying this I bought 24 g. I don’t know what Kombucha is. I could look it up but I don’t care enough. I like the name. The tea, well, it’s sort of mango oolong. Lots of mango and little other stuff but that works for me. It’s mango madness but oolong instead of white. I have a feeling 24 g is not enough for I like mango in tea.

Preparation

From what I understand, kombucha is fermented tea. I thought you had to make it as a liquid – ferment sweetened tea. So I am unsure what the Davids Tea blend is. I have never tried either form of kombucha.

Fjellrev

Yeah, it’s fermented. From what I remember, this blend has powdered kombucha in it.

Nxtdoor

thanks folks!

ashmanra

Kombucha tastes like apple cider vinegar in water to me! LOL!

I was hopelessly in love with this on my first tin. It has this thick “bready”, malty warmth that seems to be at odds, yet nonetheless, works so beautifully with the tropical fruity wave of sunshine.

I had my first cup of this while beginning BBC’s Sherlock with my older sister on a cold January evening. It was so wet and damp outside and nothing seemed more comforting or soothing than this tea. I steeped that first cup for all it was worth and drank as much as I could in the span of two episodes of Sherlock. I even got a giant mango piece. I love mangoes most of all.I was so enamored that, when I finally ran out,I bought it a fancy blue tin. Bliss was the world.

Now it’s almost a whole year later. I’m on my second tin of this and the mangoes are all gone. Sherlock’s gone too. Nothing is as good as it used to be and I don’t even want to re-steep the cup I have in front of me. I’m typing up a fifteen page essay. I should want to procrastinate! but I don’t. Maybe it’s the lack of mangoes, maybe the lack of Sherlock, but this just tastes like malty fake fruit fuzz now.

Oh, happiness, where did you go? Is it just me or can I blame another one on university papers? Why don’t I desire to repurchase you anymore? The world is cruel.

Self-pity, off. Please make a third season of Sherlock. Also, mangoes.

Awww, sad story :( Do you watch Elementary? We really like it.

Crowkettle

I’ve seen about half an episode but my sister really likes it too. It’s been on my “to watch” list for a while now.

cteresa

Just a tip, but if you really love mangoes and love juicy mango teas, if you are ever around London try to get Yumchaa´s Mango Sunrise. It´s a really lovely mango green tea.

Crowkettle

I will definitely check that out when I get the chance. Mangoes top bananas and rival coconuts in my book.

this is THE WHACKIEST tea!

visually it’s quite lovely with the long umber tendrils curling among the black fingers of tea. kombucha….. i like the calorie free fizzy drink…. how would i like it in tea though?

for me this is a very honest tea. what i smelled is what i got…. which is great because the smell was awesome! the kombucha (which is a bacteria heavy fermented tea product btw….. i had to look it up) gives a great twang without any hint of bitterness which is perfect up against the pineapple and mango!

decisions decisions….. do i ship this off to ysaurella when the time comes? lol. just kidding.

Preparation

I don’t like very much mango if it could help you to decide ;)

JustJames

that’s the thing this is such an original tea that the mango is just part of one layer. even if you don’t like it it may be nice for you to try one of david’s teas hits, lol.

Ysaurella

if this DT tastes like a tea I would be happy to try it :)

JustJames

i know what you mean. no sprinkles, no fake colour….. this is a fruit tea with a kick!

Plunkybug

This was one of my first teas from DT. I haven’t had any in a while, but I do like this one a lot.

JustJames

we can share some when we meet up =0)

Plunkybug

Sure! I liked this iced, mixed with Toasted Walnut, a while back. I’m not sure why I haven’t gotten any of this in so long….
