Taiwanese Bi Luo Chun

I’ve had this tea a fair few times yet I have not reviewed it, must have passed me by. I do love Bi Luo Chun, particularly if it’s strong and grassy.

This will be a very short review seeing as I just sat down with drink in hand and was curious to see if this was still in my virtual cupboard and am too hot from the heatwave to stand up and walk the 20 or so feet into my kitchen to get the last of the loose leaf.

Either way the steeped leaves look nice and whole with some brown/orange discolouration around the edges. Some stems are present.

The resulting liquid is cloudy(ish) yellow with a grass and sweetpea scent.

Flavour is medium strength with grass, sweetpea, toasted hay and a lightly dry after taste. After a few sips there is some astringency to this but it’s in a pleasant way, a mineral, grassy sort of way. If you’ve had Bi Luo Chun before then you know what I’m talking about.

As it cools it gathers an increase of astringency and forms an almost perfume like quality. Still medium dryness but it isn’t terrible.

I love Bi Luo Chun because it gives me a super charge and I get tea drunk. It’s one of those teas that always gets me as long as the strength is right. Looks like I’m riding the Bi Luo wave tonight.

This is a super drinkable and fairly mild green. I’m mostly getting spinach, but it’s much subtler than in, say, your typical sencha. I’d never had straight Bi Luo Chun prior to receiving this in my mystery box when Butiki was closing down, but it’s definitely something I’ll seek out in the future once I’ve finished my current stash.

I really like this one – it is spinachy and veggie but also sweet. It is very very light, which makes it different from a lot of other greens I have. I will enjoy drinking the rest of this very much. I actually don’t have that many greens because of my low bitterness tolerance. I don’t tend to take risks on them. I am glad this one was risk free.

First Taiwanese green tea i have reviewed. Overall pretty good. The flavor profile is spot on and it is smooth to drink. Color is close to straw yellow, can get a good 3 steeps.

Of course a Butiki green blend has to be supreme. The creamed corn flavor with nuttiness, butter, sweetness. The first steep was somehow tastier than the second. The flavors were more distinct. Still a good cup though but the first was amazing. There isn’t much more for me to say (I should have more to say!) but it’s the perfect green. Try it!

I’m really happy that the Butiki teas in this box are all unflavored ones that I haven’t tried. Awesome! These leaves are not curled into snails like I would expect, they’re loosely twisted. They’re very dark green in color, with some silvery bits. Their scent is quite mild, but a combination of vegetal and hay notes.

The brewed aroma is very spinachy and reminds me of a strong sencha or gyokuro. This is a very mild tea, and the flavors are lovely. It’s mostly vegetal, a combination of steamed spinach and butternut squash. Quite sweet and creamy and lovely! I find it quite similar to Laoshan Green, which I also like. Thanks to Stacy for providing this tea, I like it a lot. :)

This is a really good tea. I don’t know how I never had this one from Stacy. It’s been added to my wishlist.

I love a good green tea, and this is one I love. I’m so glad it’s in the box to try.

I made myself a big mug of this, and it’s really helping me relax after a horrible week.

Now I’m going to curl up with a book and go to sleep. Well, once the laundry finishes washing so I can put it in the dryer. I need something to wear tomorrow.

A sipdown sample from Ms. Stacy that I drank earlier today. The color of the dry leaf is in beautiful shades of green, very luminescent, & although it isn’t rolled tightly into the ‘spring snail’ shape that most bi luos feature, the flavor is very nice, with a rich savory green taste, somewhere between spinach & asparagus, & a lingering thick mouth, a feature that I tend to love.

Got this as a sample in my last order. Not bad, not especially memorable. It’s definitely a more vegetal green, lots of spinachy green notes without being roasty or buttery to me. Maybe a bit of a grassy taste too.

I’m more of a nutty, Dragonwell drinker so this isn’t a keeper for me, but it was nice to sip on this morning.
