Didn’t intend to brew up two spiced teas in one sitting, but I happened to have this at the same time as “Mom’s Spiced Peach Preserves”. The spicing was similar, although there was a unique spiciness from the honeybush here as well. The blackberry was fairly muted, and I couldn’t really taste the pear, but I commonly have trouble with that. Overall I felt that this tea was ok, but not really a favourite.

I think I just got a reblend of this in my package of teas, but this is a review of the Sep 2017 version. And it is still absolutely amazing. The base tea here is just fantastic and rich, really supporting the light ginger sweetness well. I think I made a comment previously about one of Anne’s cola/pop teas tasting like the “adult” version of the drink, and I think that holds true here too. Unsweet, and complex, it has a sophisticated vibe but still delivers what one might expect in a “ginger cola” tea. Delicious. I hope the reblend is just as good!

I wasn’t totally into this one – the orange was pretty light, although the honey and white base were noticeable. I just am not sure that I cared for the combo. Nothing wrong with it, just preference, and I’ll certainly still drink it.

Didn’t really get too much peach, but a nice mix of spices – I particularly noticed the cardamom. I did oversteep slightly, I think, as the tea was just a touch astringent. Hoping that will go away next time, and maybe it will help bring out more peach? Also of note, I’d had a lot of garlic sauce when I drank this, and sometimes that has some lingering effects. Withholding rating because of that; it would be mid-high 70s for now I think.

Resteep brought out a really nice creamy/umami flavour that was likely from the base tea (it reminded me of a flavour that comes out with oolongs). Still not really peach, but that flavour was nice.

Shae

I’ve been curious about this one. I love a good spiced peach jam.

Kittenna

I’m really hoping I can coax out more peach!

I liked this one, though not as much as the lemon coconut custard tea. Nice berry flavour and some lemony notes from the lemongrass.

Speaking of robin’s eggs, we had some robins nesting in our carport (again!) and we think that two of the eggs failed to germinate, and mommy bird has just abandoned them. There were two babies that flew out of the nest at one point, hopefully they survived. But now these eggs are just sitting there…. should we just leave them? This is the first time it has ever happened.

gmathis

I am not ornithologically trained, but I would say if your eggs are still there after a day or so, Mama is not coming back after them.

gmathis

P.S. (The tea sounds lovely!)

Kittenna

So, odd update – nest definitely seemed abandoned, but all of a sudden mama bird is back. Possibly for a second round, possibly trying to incubate the two almost certainly non-viable eggs. (I haven’t managed to get a look to see if she’s laid more.) Adventures!

Mastress Alita

I’ve seen birds roll infertile/non-viable eggs out of the nest, letting them break on the ground.

Crowkettle

They’ll reuse the nest (or parts of it) and try again right after a failed attempt sometimes. I’ve heard that American Robins can have up to 4-5 nests per season!

CrowKettle is right, this blend has a lot going on. Coconut, cacao, two base teas. It’s decadent, desserty, and creamy. Definitely chocolatey, but the coconut isn’t overly apparent (just creamy). It reminds me a bit of a chocolate mousse cake? I didn’t really pick up on too much hojicha roastiness, but I also think that my cup may have been heavier on the white tea, so I’ll try to get it more balanced next time. Overall, I like it, but I’m not sure if I love it.

drank Lemon Coconut Custard by 52teas

It looks like there was a previous version of this tea from a few years back, with both red and green rooibos, but it seems that it’s not one that I ever got to try, so I can’t compare. Doesn’t really matter; this version is pretty incredible, with bright, creamy lemon and a refreshing green rooibos base. No yucky red rooibos flavours, no pithy lemon bitterness. I’ve really been loving the series of lemony (and berry) herbal blends I’ve had recently!

Available on the website now… please buy it so I don’t buy more tea! Haha.

52Teas

The lemon coconut rooibos from 2018 was a little different, the most obvious difference being the bases (that base had the red/green rooibos base and this one is just green rooibos – plus the combinaion of lemongrass, lemon myrtle & lemon thyme, while the previous tea only had lemon balm.) This one also has a bit of a smoother flavor to it with the custard-y notes. I definitely prefer this one, although that one was certainly tasty as well. I think this one, at least for me – was taking what the 2018 blend was and going one step further with it.

Kittenna

Well, this one is pretty darn delicious! I think the choice not to use red rooibos was a good one.

Cupboard count explosion since I just got my Jan-Apr subscription teas! So many fun new things to try. This was first up, mostly because it was near the top of the box. I’ll have to drink it again to write something more meaningful about it, but the base tea is amazing and rich and chocolatey, and the flavouring is light but makes the tea extra delicious (I mostly tasted vanilla?) This is the type of blend I live for, that you just cannot get from companies like DavidsTea.

I am now craving this tea base with Anne’s berry flavours, although it’s possible it would be hard to make them pop(?), but it could also be incredible.

2022 Sipdown 128/365!

Back when sales at DavidsTea were rare, I’d bought a large amount of on-sale individually-wrapped teabags of this tea, as I quite enjoyed it. I’ve since gone off milk oolongs to some degree, finding them a bit fake and preferring natural jin xuan and other oolongs. However, was in the mood for this the other day and it delivered. Creamy, delicious oolong, and didn’t taste particularly “flavoured”. A win!

Kawaii433

I haven’t had Milk oolong for a long time. This makes me want to go hit up my stash of them. It was my favorite for so long and I temporarily burnt out I guess.

I’d been waiting for this tea to show up on the website for a while so I could use up a free tea reward on it, and I think it was worth it. I overleafed, not considering that the rolled leaves are more compact, so it wasn’t as smooth or flavourful as it could have been, but I did enjoy it. I think the profile went more in the malty hay direction instead of chocolate (I’d hoped for the latter).

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
