Tea of the Week for April 11, 2022!

This is my Mother’s Day tea (for more details about that, keep on reading!) I love the way this one turned out: lots of peachy flavor with a warm & satisfying spice note.

This tea starts with a special black tea grown in Anxi county of Fuji. It has a thick, rich mouthfeel that reminds me somewhat of a dark Oolong with a naturally occurring stone fruit note to it so I thought it’d be perfect for my mom’s peach tea.

Then I added some freeze-dried peaches & some spices: allspice, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom & clove. The result is a lovely tea that has a beautiful peachy tone to it with a pleasantly warm spice medley. Not too spicy: just warm and cozy. Sweet, juicy & delicious!

It’s also vegan, gluten-free, allergen-free & all natural!

ingredients: black tea, organic peaches, organic spices (allspice, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, ginger & nutmeg) & organic natural flavors

more about this tea: As I mentioned above, this is my Mother’s Day tea (again, early – look at me! I’m being proactive rather than reactive. Wow! It only took her more years than I care to mention for me to get like that! Yet – no promises that it will always be this way, this is only like 2 holidays I’ve done this for versus the many that have passed by & me creating the teas after the fact.)

Anyway, I created this tea for my mom who requested more spiced tea – could I make a tea that tasted like peach preserves with spices in it like her gramma used to make for her when she was young? Now, I’ve never actually tried the tea that her gramma used to make for her. But I can make a peach tea with spices in it.

Thanks, mom, for inspiring this tea and for all that you do! I love you!

to brew: shake the pouch to ensure that the ingredients are well-incorporated. Use 3g of tea to 12oz of nearly boiling water (205°F) & steep for 3 ½ minutes. Strain & allow to cool for at least 10 minutes.

please note: the label of this tea was printed with a suggested steeping time of 3 minutes. I have since tested it with a steep time of 3 ½ minutes and I like it even better at 3 ½ minutes than the 3 minutes. The Fujian Huang Jin Gui doesn’t get bitter with a slightly longer steep time!

serving suggestions: I like this one hot but it’s also quite good iced! It doesn’t really need additions – it has a mild sweetness to it from the peaches & the spices in this help accentuate the sweetness a bit. If you want a sweeter cup, a wee bit of honey is really quite lovely in this! Definitely take this tea for a resteep! The second steep is even better than the first!

I absolutely love this tea. As I mentioned in the tea description, my mom asked me to make a tea that tastes like the tea she would have as a child. Her grandmother would make her black tea flavored with some spices (my mom called it gramma’s “witches” brew) and then sweetened with peach preserves (rather than sugar).

So, I decided to make a tea inspired by that memory for a mother’s day gift for my mom. I chose a Fujian black tea that had a natural peachy flavor to it so I thought it would be a perfect base for this blend. It is such a lovely black tea – smooth and sweet. A really nice afternoon tea. Pleasantly warm spices & a sweet peach note. I love it!

Didn’t really get too much peach, but a nice mix of spices – I particularly noticed the cardamom. I did oversteep slightly, I think, as the tea was just a touch astringent. Hoping that will go away next time, and maybe it will help bring out more peach? Also of note, I’d had a lot of garlic sauce when I drank this, and sometimes that has some lingering effects. Withholding rating because of that; it would be mid-high 70s for now I think.

Resteep brought out a really nice creamy/umami flavour that was likely from the base tea (it reminded me of a flavour that comes out with oolongs). Still not really peach, but that flavour was nice.

I’ve been curious about this one. I love a good spiced peach jam.

I’m really hoping I can coax out more peach!

This was the new Mother’s Day tea offered early (week of April 11, 2022) by 52Teas. I was attracted by both the tasty name, and my sister’s birthday, so I looked closer. The description was absolutely inviting. Creator Anne wrote: “I created this tea for my mom who requested more spiced tea—could I make a tea that tasted like peach preserves with spices in it like her gramma used to make for her when she was young?” I was hooked. I got visions of sitting at a table with a checked tablecloth, maybe on an enclosed back porch on a summer’s morning with a light breeze wafting in through the screen, while a beloved grandma made a special tea just for her and her granddaughter to share.
Okay, so I’m over-romanticizing. But that’s what the description alone did for me. I had to order it.
The result was just as good as the description. “Not too spicy: just warm and cozy. Sweet, juicy and delicious!” I was only able to get the 12 gram sample packets, but that was okay. Now that I know I like this tea, I will definitely go for the 36 gram package next time!
This is the perfect summer tea!

I just found this note. Thank you for the lovely words. My mom told me about when she was young – that her grandmother would brew a cup of black tea and sweeten it with peach preserves (they didn’t use sugar) and used her spices to flavor the tea. I loved the story – I guess I was kind of romanticizing it too, but it seemed like a sweet memory of my mother’s and I didn’t really hear a lot of stories about my mom’s youth so I really enjoyed hearing about it. I’m glad you enjoyed the tea too.
