drank Strawberry Kiwi by DAVIDsTEA

I’ve actually now forgotten what I thought of this tea, except that it was a bit sweeter than I’d like, and I didn’t love it. I preferred Strawberry Kiwi Capri.

2022 Sipdown 131/365!
Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge May 2022: Tea flavoured like a favourite baked good

Picked this tea for my favourite baked good; I loooove blueberry muffins!

Got a 25g packet of this as a freebie with a recent order, and as an experiment, I brewed the entire package up into a 16(?) oz mug. It was delicious. Berries and cream, earthy, perfectly sweet, kind of like an adult juice. I loved it, and so did my son. Had a resteep that was delicious too. An expensive mug of tea but that’s ok!

Iced pitcher of this; it’s not bad despite being rooibos, but there’s a bit of an oily film on it that I don’t like. Flavour is fairly creamy orange with some woodiness from the rooibos.

I enjoyed this one – slightly creamy lemon, and a nice black base. I got some really delicious hints of maltiness while drinking it, which made it stand out from other lemony blacks.

2022 Sipdown 130/365!

First summer pitcher of Goji Pop! Love this tea, tart, melony, goji berry-y, and 100% refreshing. I have a million more packets of this because it was heavily discounted last year and I went a bit crazy, so this won’t be the last review for it this year, for sure!

2022 Sipdown 129/365!

Really fallen off the bandwagon with sipdowns – I usually only find the time to consciously finish off teas in the evening, and now with my recent insomnia and trying to cut back on evening caffeine, that it is making things difficult. However, iced tea sipdowns are still fairly achievable!

This tea was a sample that Roswell Strange sent quite a while back. Can’t recall what I’ve previously thought of it, but I got serious fuzzy peach vibes from it and actually rather enjoyed it. Kind of a tart, peachy flavour. I would guess that there is no stevia in this blend? (Checked ingredients, I am right.) Definitely appreciate that lack of artificial sweetness. I had an artificially-sweetened green tea chiller packet thingy from Starbucks last night (it was ancient, they probably don’t even carry it anymore) and it was horrifically sweet, I almost couldn’t finish it. Yuck.

The last of this tea is still chilling in the fridge to be finished later, and I’m looking forward to it. Too bad I don’t have much more of this – spreadsheet says I have a 12.5g packet of it, which isn’t going to go very far. (I have a bunch of other summer peach teas from DT, though, as it seems to be a flavour released every year, so I’ll be ok. Lol.)

drank Pineapple Sencha by 52teas

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 279)

I opened the packet of this tea and was absolutely blasted with pineapple. Yum! Unfortunately, I think I may have overleafed a tad, not considering the fine leaf, and my cup is a bit unpleasantly strong. If I was feeling more motivated right now, I’d try diluting it, as I think that’s all it needs.

Anyways, flavour is pretty good (when I only take a small sip, haha). Strong, clear pineapple with a strongly umami/buttery/mariney green base. It’s just a bit drying but I’m 99% sure that’s because of the overleafing; it’s not bitter at all.

I particularly love that this is not a base that Anne typically uses – although a pineapple sencha isn’t a tea I’d pick out myself, I feel like there might be some other winning combos out there using the same base. Maybe… blackberry sencha? Blueberry? Lavender? Vanilla lemon? The possibilities are endless!

ETA: So I resteeped this one in a little bubble teacup, as I always do. Had a sip; it tasted alright. Left it until morning. Drank in the morning and omg, it was like a different tea. Heavily, heavily umami and pineapple, no astringency, nothing. Left the most amazing umami flavour in the mouth. This is not the first time I’ve had this happen with a tea, where it improves overnight, but dang. It was so delicious.

drank Raspberry Parfait by 52teas

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 278)

I think this is the most raspberry-tasting tea I have ever tried. It is utterly delicious. Base is smooth but I do have a feeling that it could get astringent without careful attention to infusion time. I’ll have to compare this to… that other raspberry black tea Anne did a while back. Raspberry Beret (I looked it up). (Also TIL, I have 6 different raspberry teas from 52teas. I don’t remember the raspberry flavour ever being this vibrant!)

I’m also getting Butiki vibes; I think she must have had a raspberry tea that had some similarity.

drank Pumpkin Butter Cookie by 52teas

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 277)

I feel like this tea has mellowed with age, which is making it more agreeable to me. It’s a nice smooth mixture of pumpkin spices, and the base isn’t astringent in this cup I just brewed up. I’m not really getting any buttery notes at this point, not sure if I ever did.

Definitely got an irish cream vibe from this tea, which has me very pleased, although the base was a bit rougher than my preference would be (I don’t think I oversteeped, but not sure). I did pick up the cacao nibs in the tea, which I’m not a huge fan of (prefer cacao shell, which is also present), but it wasn’t overwhelming. This comes in as my second-favourite irish cream tea, second to a tea I got in an Amoda sub box eons ago and somewhat recently finished off. Can’t recall the name offhand, but just thinking of it makes me salivate a bit. This tea could possibly get there with different brewing parameters, so I’m excited to play around.

Profile

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
