Being Canadian, I am used to rye whiskey, as that is what I would say the majority of Canadian whiskey is made of. Where I am from, there is actually not such a thing as whiskey, we call it rye – Can I have a rye and coke please! Ha ha. Anyway this is a preface to this note as this one tastes more like a malt corn whiskey. If anyone cares to know. (I swear I don’t drink that much…).

Made this one as per package directions, added 2 tsp of white sugar.

This one is actually not too bad. It definitely has a cola flavour and there are hints of whiskey in the background. I mentioned it tasted like malt corn whiskey, but I don’t get the feel of malt from the liquor, just the slight taste of malt, if that makes sense. (You can actually buy “malt” which is like a powder and you can mix it into things like drinks and milk shakes etc.). That is what I am tasting. There is, however, a strange chemical taste. It seems like that chemical taste you can get from some flavourings.

I would say that from the new SBTs (new as in from last years Kickstarter campaign), this is one of the better ones, IMO,

drank Lemon Lime Bitters by SBT

So I made this tea today but it is not in the steepster database which is odd because all the other SBTs are there. But what is really odd is it is not even listed on the Zoomdweebies website ?!?!? I even double checked the package and it for sure says Lemon Lime Bitters…

I made this one as per package directions. I added about 2tsp of white sugar.

Let me start by saying I love bitters. Any type of “bitters” or “sour” drink (ie. Whiskey Sour) is my absolute fav.

This one brewed does smell like lemon-lime. The taste of the tea is disappointing. Not bad but just not what I would have anticipated based on the “bitters” in the name. There is a lemon-y citrus flavour to the tea. I would say it is extremely similar to the other SBT/52 Teas limish flavours – lime jello, key lime cheesecake, etc. But it is missing the bitters. Not even a hint of the bitters. I was quite disappointed.

I did however drink a whole litre of this tea in a couple of hours, so it didn’t taste bad, just not what I wanted. I did not re-steep.

I love Assam teas!

My absolute favourite is a CTC Assam, I don’t know why, but they are the best. This one is not a CTC, the leaves are very small and delicately curled.

The dry tea has a nice, sweet, fruit and slightly spicey flavour. The brewed tea smells malty, slight cocoa-beany, with a lot of sweetness. My taste buds were salivating over the smell.

The brewed tea is bold and malty but with no astringency or bitterness. There is a slight natural sweetness to the tea. I want to say it is a stone fruit sweetness. Reminds me of the pits of an apricot or peach. There is a slight spice to the tea. But it is like a fruit-spice if that makes sense to anyone else.

Very delicious Assam. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a multi-faceted black tea.

In a side note: I lost some of this tea due to dropping the open package on the floor. I bet it was only about a TBSP but I still shed a tear over it.

So there was one major wicked storm in my area last night. Pea sized hail – my poor plants, 3" of rain in my gauge this morning – however last night the wind was blowing the rain sideways, so who knows. My house and yard ended up being spared, there are some pretty big trees that were downed in the area.

So I had wanted to make sun tea today. But that didn’t happen because when I woke up it was still grey and dreary and drizzling. I went to the farmers market and saw fresh basil. I grew basil this year in one of the deck pots, but I didn’t grow enough of it. So I use it sparingly. I picked up a large bag of fresh basil for $2. Once I got home I put 3 bags of this tea along with all the basil into a 2L jug of water and let it “counter brew”.

This tea is delightful. It always makes an awesome sun tea, so the counter tea brew works well for it too. It is pretty light as it has only been brewing for about 2 hours now. There is a light infusion of the basil, making it taste fresh and crisp and summery.

I just keep adding more water to the pitcher as I pour some out to drink.

I think this will keep me going for a few more days.

The sun is starting to come out. I may be able to do some sun brewing after all!

So I have had several cups of this one iced this afternoon. I used 6 tsp of tea in about 1/2 litre of boiling water. Then added a whole lotta ice. I didn’t need to add any sweetener as it is sweet on its own.

This one is definitely better iced than hot. The artificial lemon taste is quite blunted. It tastes like a light black tea with candied lemon. Kind of like those little candy lemon drops, but there is no sour, just sweet.

I would say this one is not a favourite but it was nice for an extremely hot and humid day.

I purchased this one quite a while ago with the intention of making iced tea. I never did, it just sat in the bottom on the tea cupboard. I have been getting sick of some of the iced teas I had been making on the weekends so I decided to pull this one out.

I did make it iced, but it is currently chilling in the icebox. I also decided I should try it hot for completion.

Hot, the tea is ok. Honestly it reminds me a bit of no name brand lemon dish soap.I really feel this one was designed to be iced. I hope the same taste does not translate over to the iced version. The black tea base is mild. There is a definite candied lemon taste to the tea, it is bordering on artificial though, hense the lemon dish soap reference. It is a little more sweet than I would like my hot black teas, but I did not add anything to it, that is the way it came. The liquor is very thick and there is a slight astringency at the end of the sip but only if you hold the liquor in your mouth for a little bit before swallowing.

Today I am re-hydrating. I went to the local fair yesterday, all day. I didn’t think I got too dehydrated because I drank ALOT (1/2 litre of fair rootbeer, a “freshly squeezed” from syrup lemonade, a bottle of water, a lychee soda, a gingerale, and a large coconut water, I was only able to have one cup of tea yesterday – so that was probably the problem). So you know when you get dehyrdrated, but you don’t really feel it. After I had washed off all of the dirt, the calf cramps hit!!! I feel not too awesome today. So I have been trying to rehydrate all last night and today.

I had made this one yesterday with the intention of drinking it, but it got too late by the time I got home.

I quite liked the 52 teas version of this, it was a rooibos base. There was a small window where it actually tasted like mountain dew, but for the most part it tasted like jelly beans. Well this SBT it pretty jelly bean-y. It is not bad, I am just a but disappointed as I was hoping for more mountain dew. Again it is not as strong as I would have liked, would have been better with 1 liter vs 2.

Made this as per package directions. I did add some white sugar. I only intended to ad a tsp or two but I thought I could just sprinkle some in from the bag instead of trying to scoop it out. So Instead of a sprinkle, I got an avalanche. As a result it was quite a but more sweet than I would have liked. I am definitely getting key lime, but I don’t really get any cheesecake. I found this one to be quite astringent at the end of the sip. I think it would have been better to have been brewed for 2 minutes instead of 3.


The avalanche has happened to me enough times that I should invest in sugar cubes! :)

drank Peaches & Ginger by Harney & Sons

The last time I had this it was in the little Harney’s sampler pouch. I ordered a 4 oz tin a while ago. I finally got around to opening it up. There are moderately large pieces of candied ginger in the tin which there wasn’t any in the sample pouch :)

Really this is just a ditto of my last review on this one. The ginger is nice, it is definitely candied flavour, but there is also a spice to it. The peach is gentle underneath the ginger and black tea base. Today I am finding the black base to be a bit strong, but that may have been how I brewed it.

This is now one of my favorite ginger peach teas, that is a black tea and not a herbal.

Made this one as per package directions, added approx. 1 TBSP white sugar.

It was ok. I was hoping for sweet, candy orange with a creamy flavour, just like a creamsicle. But the orange was much more of a spicey or peppery type orange flavour. Not a whole lot of sweetness. There is a light milky type flavour to the tea. To me this type of orange flavour is just not mixing well with the cream flavour.

I am a lifetime tea lover.

I did foray into the world of coffee for a period of time, but I returned to my true love. I still, however, enjoy a good cup of java.

My all time favorite tea is Earl Grey, which I drink every morning, the stronger the bergamot the better. I definitely prefer natural oil of bergamot to artificial flavouring.

I mostly like black and dark oolong teas. My current favs are Fujian blacks, Keemun and Assams, and Wuyi oolongs. I gravitate towards anything with lychee in it. I also drink a lot of herbal blends but am wary of hibiscus. I do not favour mate, or pu’erh tea, although I have found a few blends that I like. (I so badly want to like straight pu’erh tea but it all tastes gross to me. I keep trying though). Rooibos, green and white teas fall somewhere in the middle. I find myself gravitating towards heavily roasted oolongs and teas from Paris/France based companies.

I love iced teas and cold brews.

My current tea goal is to make the perfect cup of chai from scratch – almost there…I think.

I am in love with the whole experience of tea.
