3294 Tasting Notes

I took up knitting about a month ago, & last night I finished making my first pair of socks!!

This is a lovely tea, especially lightly sweetened. It’s bold enough to be satisfying, with a touch of vanilla, chocolate, & orange. I drank it while Tony & I were watching Winter’s Tale.

Christina / BooksandTea

Congrats on finishing your first knitting project!

Terri HarpLady

thanks!
This is actually project #3. First it was washrags & dishrags,& I’m still making those too, then I started working on squares for an eventual afghan, using a variety of patterns, kind of a sampler. I’ll be working on that for awhile.
Then I got to make my first pair of socks!
It feels very gratifying :)

caile

Cozy knitted socks! That’s great!

mj

Socks after only a month of knitting? So impressive!! They look great :)

I love single varietal teas so much, but I also enjoy a good blend, particularly a good breakfast blend. This one is unusual in that most breakfast blends tend towards 2 or more black teas that have various features which, when combined, create a balanced cup.
This one includes white, oolong, & shu puerh in the mix, along with 2 black teas that I love. The results is a complex & complementary cup of awesomeness: chocolate, malt, sweetness, a little tangy, with a thick satisfying mouth.

I’m enjoying this one in bed, first cup of the day. Nothing fancy, but a good yunnan black, & I’m a sucker for novel shapes, as long as the tea tastes good.
It feels good to just relax a bit, as I’ve been on the go all week, & starting Monday life as I have known it for the last several years (we’re talking laid back pajama wearing tea drinking gardening cooking eating harp playing & teaching bliss) will suddenly change.
I’ve done it before…I can do this…a little extra $$$ will be nice!
The hardest part will be leaving the house at 6:00am.
I’ll need tea
Lots of tea!

One of my favorite things about snail teas is that they’re so easy to measure!

I wish you luck with getting up early, that’s always hard for me. >.<

MzPriss

LOTS of tea! I might need a bit of snaily myself right now

carol who

What the heck is snail tea?

Terri HarpLady

Carol, Bi Luo Chun translates to something like spring snail, describing the rolled up shape of the leaf. Here’s the link to the one I drank this morning:

Here’s the link to the one I like even more, so beautiful & delicious:

MzPriss

I feel yet another YS order coming on. Terri did you get the brocade-looking yixing?

Terri HarpLady

It hasn’t arrived yet…

MzPriss

sigh. It’s soooooooo pretty

Oh, hello rich earthy cup!
This has been a very long day.
First I had to go by Metro High to pick up a harp that I had placed there a few years ago for a student that was attending there. He graduated in spring, & I’ll need that Harp!
Then I went to Carr Lane, the school I’m teaching at, & got to work about 9am.
I had to move 9 harps from the far wing of the building, where they have been stored in a closet, but first I had to move a bunch of junk out of the closet, because they were in the very back. I use a dolly, & I should have turned on my pedometer, cuz I’m pretty sure I walked at least a couple of miles today!
Once the harps were moved, I had to clear all the junk out of my classroom. The previous teacher had that room for years, & she retired & left tons of stuff in there. I moved it all into the empty classroom next door, which is where everyone is putting stuff they don’t want.
That took hours, & more walking. Now I have an empty closet, lots of open shelf spaces, my harps are lining the walls, & although there’s still a ton of stuff to do, I should be good to go for the first day of classes, & I can do the other things (like spray & wipe the entire room with Ms Meyers clean day – Lemon Verbena, empty the desk drawers that are full of junk, redo the bulletin boards, etc) a little at a time.

I’m on the 2nd steep of this tea. I came home, had the first steep while I taught a student, had a rehearsal with my flute player for 2 hours, drank this 2nd cup, & I’m done for the day.
Teas I brought to school with me:
The Black Lotus
Laoshan Black Chocolate Genmaicha
I was there for 7 hours. That wasn’t enough tea!

apt

You should try cold steeping it. I’ve never had Teavivre’s but the Hao Ya from my local shop is super minty and refreshing when cold steeped.

Terri HarpLady

Hmmm….I might have to give that a try. Thanks!

I’ve enjoyed this tea, with it’s rich & tart flavors, and now it’s gone! Already?
I even dribbled a little of it into my pan to steam some kale for breakfast :)
Now I need to brew 2 teas to go, cuz I’m headed out the door to set up my classroom!!

mj

Have fun setting up your classroom :). Exciting! Teaching is A LOT of work (which I’m sure you know), but I had fun the semester I taught a class.

Terri HarpLady

It’s always fun to see the faces of these kids when they walk into a room with 10 harps lining the walls! Most of them have never seen a harp before :D

Awesome! :)

It’s been a long & busy day, & so much still to do before I go to bed.
I’ve been drinking this tea all evening. The dry leaf, in shades of green & gray, has a fresh & sweet kind of aroma that brings to mind a spring rain. Although I was expecting a potent brash raw taste, the early steepings were very mild & creamy, & the flavor gradually built to an almost fruity taste. This is a lovely sheng, with potent energy.

Thank you to Angel & Teavivre for the generous sample!

This is actually pretty good, especially with a pinch of sweet added. It’s sweet & fruity, a little tart, but there isn’t so much hibiscus in it that my mouth puckers.
It does kind of remind me of bayer orange flavored children aspirins, from when I was a kid.

On a side note, my grapes are starting to ripen, one grape at a time. I planted these grapes a few years ago, & according to the package, they were seedless red.
They aren’t.
They are something along the lines of a concord…big hunk of pulp in the middle, touch skin, & 2 – 3 large seeds. Not my favorite kind of grape, due to texture, however, they are tasty.

Stephanie

Bummer on the grapes. Might make good jam :)

Terri HarpLady

Oh well, we’ll still eat them, or maybe I’ll put them all in a barrel & climb in barefoot to stomp ;)

mj

I have always wanted to stomp grapes! It seem like it would be so much fun :)

Terri HarpLady

My original plan was to invite my 3 grand kids over to pick grapes, & make it a special occasion. Of course, that would require all the grapes to become ripe at the same time, or at least a few clusters of them.

1 T + 8oz X 3/5 min
I still haven’t done a gongfu steepings with this tea yet, & I really should.
(Sars, I’m going to buy that damn yixing I wanted for smoky teas now. I blame you. hahaha)
Anyway, it’s very tasty, in a pine & brown sugar kind of way, not overly smokey, but delicious. I’m drinking it plain, but I happen to know for a fact that a little Maple syrup turns this one into a wonderful dessert.

SarsyPie

Who meeeeee? Lookie here… I asked YOU for a link for teaware. I can’t help it that you kept on going :p

boychik

MzPriss, the pot is gorgeous. I keep saying myself I don’t need it(. The only excuse I need 100ml or smaller)

Cameron B.

MzPriss, that’s my favorite one from their new collection. SO jealous!

Terri HarpLady

Priss, that is Beautiful!

SarsyPie

Both of your new teapots are so lovely! Eeeee!!! Teawares!!

Dexter

OMG!!! Those are both BEAUTIFUL!!!!

Dexter

And the one Terri got also comes in a round, fat – pumpkin style… whimper…
http://camellia-sinensis.com/en/teapot/theiere-de-mme-sheng-sg-1

Terri HarpLady

Yeah, that roundish one is really cute too. I picked mine cuz I like the simple designs on the lid, & I already have several round teapots, so I liked the different shape.

boychik

Terri, I saw that pot few weeks ago. Gorgeous !

Still delicious! (see previous reviews if you’re looking for one)
This morning this tea came with me into the city to the school, where I visited with the awesome new principal, & I got to select my classroom: I actually get a real classroom! Previously, it was a closet & we had to drag the harps out onto the stage to practice), & my classroom has windows! I never had those before! And shelves, & everything (such as electrical outlet for teapot…).
So it looks like I’m actually really doing this! I’ve been self-employed, living the pajama lifestyle, for years, so it will take some adjustment, but it’s only Mon, Wed, & Fri, and I’m actually kind of excited.
Tomorrow I have to go to a meeting, Friday I get to set up my classroom (I’ve never actually done that before).
Monday school starts!

yyz

I’m excited for you. I hope everything goes smoothly and that you and your students both have fun!

MzPriss

lad you’re more excited about this now!

MzPriss

Why the HELL does Steepser eat my letters? Why? Terri – I am glad – GLAD – that you are more excited about this now.

Terri HarpLady

thanks! When I taught there before there were some really fun times, & I’m really hoping the new principal helps to take this school back to what it used to be, because it used to be a great program.

OMGsrsly

That’s so exciting! Hope it’s a wonderful experience. :)

looseTman

Congrats on your exciting new position!

Getting down near the bottom of the bag with this one, so I’ll probably have to start thinking about a Butiki order sometime soon, besides, Stacy & I never did get the ball rolling on my custom blend…

Stephanie

Oooh I wanna hear about your custom blend idea :D :D :D

Butiki Teas

Oh yeah. I will write a note to follow up with you on pricing this week. So sorry about that. Same blend?

Terri HarpLady

Yup! And don’t feel bad, it was back around the New Year, you guys were traveling, everybody is busy these days! I forgot all about it for awhile myself, but was just now thinking of it :)

Bio

I’m so excited to have found this community! I’m a self-employed Harpist (acoustic & electric – Originals, Classical, Rock, Jazz, etc) & Singer/Songwriter. My days & nights revolve around teaching at home, playing gigs, gardening,& fixing awesome food to eat. My schedule is different everyday, but I just go with the flow, & I sip a lot of tea!

My love of Tea began with Herbals back in the 70’s. One of my favorites was a licorice blend from House of Hezekiah, an old tea shop in Kansas City. There was also a tea with mint, rose petals, chamomile, etc called Nuclear Casual Tea.
In the 80’s I gave up caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, (& a few illicit substances…), and brewed medicinal blends & tinctures to support 4 pregnancies (all children born at home). In the 90’s my love affair with green teas began when I discovered ‘The Republic of Tea’. Their beautiful teas & packaging inspired my original song, “TeaMind”, from my CD “Zen Breakfast”. If you’d like to hear the song for free, drop by my website.

In general, I drink my teas straight, but occasionally I add a pinch of Stevia & maybe some coconut or almond milk (I’m allergic to dairy, gluten, & various other things & avoid most sweets.)

I’ve explored a variety of teas:
Whites tend to be a little bland…sorry
Oolongs – wonderfully sensual
Roobios – I’m not a fan in general
Puehr – a fairly new direction for me
I’m not a huge fan of flavored teas, but I do make exceptions, & I’ll try just about anything once.

And Black Tea, Oh how I love thee!!
I am on a quest for the most wonderful breakfast cup! I will find you, my Love!
