From Yezi Tea

Yezi’s Qing Pin tea is locally sourced from farmer Huang Jian, whose family has been involved in growing tea at Nanhu, one of China’s most famed tea growing regions, for the last 250 years. Qing Pin in Chinese means bold personality, which is apt for this famed Nanhu Mountain tea. Qing Pin tea leaves produce a bold, dark, burgundy-colored beverage. The flavor has pronounced notes of peach and pear with distinctive smoky notes that neatly balance the natural sweetness of the tea.

Tea amount: 5-6 grams or 4 tsp. of tea
Water amount: 1 gram of tea / 50-60ml of water or 1 tsp. of tea / 3 oz. of water
Water Temperature: 95-100 °C or 203-212 °F
First brew: 15 seconds
Subsequent brews: 10 seconds

I took advantage of Yezi Tea’s free samples and ordered 3 samples of black teas. This was not one of the teas I chose but was one I really wanted to try. Luckily, Yezi teas is super generous, because in my order of only free samples, they included an additional free sample! This was super smart of them, cause my goodness, this tea is good. And I must order more. I wish I had more to experiment with. I brewed it gong fu style and each steep was different than the previous. But I’d like to try this western style too. The first steep was kind of roasty and kind of grape nuts-y, the second, a sweet dark chocolate, the third honey. The description used the word smoky, which is why i originally didn’t include it in my order, but I wouldn’t say smoky at all, roasty more like. Burnt toasty. Bet it’s super good western style.

BBBB ladies, this will be in the box next round as I’m going to order more. And probably another from them, so don’t order anything yet!

Sil

awesome..sounds great!

Terri HarpLady

Yay! As I was reading your review, I was like, “I hope this is her next BBBB offering.” :D

Sil

glad you said that too…was looking at getting free samples from them via my tea mule lol

Jude

Grape nuts – what a clever call on that flavor!

Finally getting around to trying one of the samples that I ordered from Yezi Tea! Of course whenever people start raving about a Chinese black tea on Steepster, I know I need to try it, especially when its a type that I’ve never tried before.

This one definitely smells tasty. It actually smells a bit like the Laoshan Black Genmaicha, like toasted rice/grains, chocolate, and a hint of molasses. When it was still pretty hot it was a tasty but not too exciting cup of black tea, but as it cools it definitely becomes sweeter and more chocolatey. This one definitely reminds me of LB with more toasted grains in the flavor. I think this is one of those Chinese black teas that does well with a fair lot of leaf when brewed western style, so I may reduce the amount of water for the remainder of my sample. Or maybe just steep it really long… I have a feeling it will just get rich and lovely. Definitely a very tasty tea!

I had a lovely visit with my friend last night, went for an excellent dinner, watched Disney movies and caught up on life :) I gave her a bunch of my teas to try and also helped her make a Steepster account, NerdLor :D all in all an excellent visit and hope I can see her more often this summer!

I had a cup of a new tea this morning but didn’t take any notes lol so I’ll save that one for later, this is the second cup of the day and man oh man, there are creamy chocolate notes and fruit today! Like actual cream in here, a honeyed type of cream..it just turned out wonderfully on this fine first day of summer! See previous notes!

TheTeaFairy

Welcome to your friend Nerdlor, I’m now following her then :-)

mrs.stenhouse12

Awesome! I don’t know how much she will post, but she will probably read lots of notes :) I’m so excited she’s on steepster now!

Sil

Woohoo! I got a follow from her lol hope I don’t bore her to death lol

TheTeaFairy

Sil the only person you could possibly bore would have to be a blind person who can’t read braille :-)

mrs.stenhouse12

Haha I am sure she won’t be bored! Your notes are great :) so many teas I have not tried! Lol :D

Sil

Yes but I’ve been soooo busy lately that my tasting notes are all like.zomg so tired. TEa. good. Yay night.

We’re watching World War Z.
When I saw the previews, I said I wasn’t going to watch it.
Tony put it on his Netflix list, & now we’re watching it.
It’s very intense.
I need good tea to watch a movie like this.
Thank you TastyBrew.

I steeped this, but for too long. I should have done the 20 seconds or whatever was suggestion because this is STRONG. It reminds me of the Justea black teas – it’s that strong. Good, but hard to determine flavours behind all that KAPOW.

I will re-steep and try and update this later on!

Like TastyBrew, I passed this over when doing my free samples because the descriptor ‘smoky’ typically scares me away. But I’m really really glad they included this, because it’s really lovely.

The dry leaf smells kind of cocoa, sweet wood, and plums. It didn’t smell quite like, but was really evocative of an aged Merlot.

I brewed this up western style, with just under 2 teaspoons at 205, for 4 minutes for my 9 oz cup.

The steeped aroma changes into something warmer and sweeter, still a little plummy smelling, but also has a lovely earthiness to it and cocoa. I could sit here and smell this all day. Yum. The taste was naturally sweet, with a wonderful toasted nuttiness and slightly fruity notes that hung somewhere between peach and plum. There’s also a definite cocoa hint in here too that tails the end of the sip. I’m not getting anything I’d call smokey, but definitely roasty toasty and warming.

This is an awesome introduction to Yezi Tea and I can’t wait to try the rest of my samples. I’m pretty sure there’s definitely going to be an order from this.

Yay! How big are the samples?

moraiwe

All of mine were 5g samples :)

TastyBrew

@moraiwe — I’m glad you like it too! I tried all 6 and I wouldn’t consider any of them smoky. But when I think smoky, I think Lapsang Souchong. None are like that. All 6 are delicious. Did you get the high mountain one too? That one is super good.

@Terri- This is coming your way from me. This and the high mountain one. And then I’m sending a few more the next time around, so don’t buy it…YET! I’m sure you’ll want to buy some of your own once you try this.

moraiwe

I agree on the Lapsang smokey thing. Like, there’s roasted. And then there’s smokey. And it’s the latter category I don’t like.

But yes! I grabbed the Gao Shan High Mountain and the Jin Jun (and then the Dong Ding oolong) and now I’m even more excited to try them!

Terri HarpLady

Did you guys try the zheng shan xiao zhong, the Shui Xian Da Hong Pao, or any of the puerhs?

Terri HarpLady

TastyB, I’m excited that you’re sending some! Yay!

TastyBrew

I tried the zheng shan xiao zhong and it will be in the box next time around. I haven’t tried any oolongs or puerhs yet. Order free samples of those and let me know!

Terri HarpLady

That’s the plan! I wanted to make sure to get samples of stuff you were NOT sending! :)

moraiwe

I debated on the Shui Xian Da Hong Pao, so if you end up with that one definitely let us know!

Now this is a lightly smoky tea that I do like. It is sweet, honey-ish, bready and very midly smoky. This one was nice.

I’ve been boring for what feels like months now, where I just want to dwell a bit on old favorites every day and rediscover why I fell in love with them in the first place. Means a dearth of logging but wonderful tea time as some I feel I almost appreciate more upon revisit. This is a good example. What an excellent tea. This morning was slow going for no good reason at all, and one of those where you wake up having to do approximately a billion little tasks before you can even make your first cuppa. When I finally had a second to do so I wanted it to be failproof satisfying and this fit the bill and how. I’ve had something like 6 cups—I figured I’d waited so long I deserved to do this in the gaiwan and set myself free for 15 minutes, whee—and it’s still going strong, smooth and sweet and clean but rich bordering on hearty. Present but refined. Delicious. Teas that offer so much flavor and depth in a matter of seconds when it comes to steep time still amaze me.

Anna

You could never be boring. Also, you’re totally fancy.

ifjuly

oh you! i love the idea of “fancy” becoming an injoke. :D

i am amazed someone who sees me prattle on on FB about hair buns and cat puke can say such a thing. but grateful too. <3 goodness knows it’s quite a shock coming from a lady who jetsets and gets her hair did splendidly and can talk theory and feminism with the best of ‘em. it’s been a pleasure running into you on the internets. (:

Anna

__Morgana__

… is wondering whether the hair buns and cat puke were somehow related? Heh.

Anna

Best pet related hair styling product EVER.

Cheri

I cannot stop laughing. Thanks, Anna.

Anna

Yes, this is how I like to introduce myself to new people on Steepster, Cheri – cat puke jokes!

Cheri

In case you can’t see my profile picture, it’s one of my furry kids. In fact, he’s the pukey one. I know all about cat puke and cat puke jokes.

ifjuly

just last night i found out something i kind of wish i could unknow, that all those bouffanty ‘40s hairstyles were accomplished with the use of something known as a “hair rat”—women collected their shed hairs and made them into a little sponge like filler for their up ’dos! i mention this weirdness because now i’m imagining cat puke as a result of one finding one’s hair rat and taking it as a snack. eugh.

cat puke. it’s what brings people together. that or an immature/gross sense of humor.

ifjuly

haahaha, “the pukey one”…oh feline terms of endearment.

__Morgana__

Does every home with more than one cat have “pukey one”? And here I thought we were the only ones.

Cheri

I think so, yes.

Anna

I think every home with no cat also has a “pukey one”, to be honest.

Angrboda

Our two share the pukey duty equally it seems. Luckily they don’t do it very often. Mostly during shedding season.

ifjuly

ours share it too. unluckily all the time during shedding season. and worst of all, their favorite time of day to do it is while we’re asleep at night at like 3am, either right on the bed or right where i put my feet when i get out of bed. :b the first time that happened, husband was in the shower and heard a loud curse word from the bedroom when half awake i stepped in it. now i know to check before getting out of bed. oh cats. “you’re lucky you’re cute!” i only-half-jokingly tease at them.

__Morgana__

Our pukey one is majorly pukey. The others do it much more rarely. We took him to the vet and the vet said there’s really no medical explanation. I suspect bulemia.

Cheri

A friend was just telling me that she read somewhere that if you raise up their food bowl up about 6" or so, so that they don’t have to bend over all the way to eat, and it helps with the puking. She said it worked for her. I’m thinking about trying it. Pukey Penny was puking only occasionally for a while, but he’s back to puking a lot again.

__Morgana__

Interesting. We’ll have to try that.

ifjuly

yeah, thanks for the tip! i will try that…

Angrboda

It could be over-eating, maybe. Luna has done that when she was younger, eating far far too quickly and then the whole thing came up again and you could easily see how some of the pellets had just been swallowed whole. They have a ‘food maze’ now, where I pour both their portions in at the top and then they have to use their paws to get the food out. Slows down the eating pace a lot and entertains the cats. It’s a bit noisy while they eat, but it’s cute to watch.

“Good for you you’re so cute!” Oh I know that statement well. It was directed at Luna when she attempted DIY surgery by removing all her stitches two days after having been spayed so that we had to go and have her re-stitched. By the emergency vet. On a Saturday evening. In the next town over. By taxi. And pick her up again the next morning. By taxi. (We didn’t have a car then and public transport would have taken three times as long) That little adventure cost almost as much as the intial spaying and ear tatooing of two cats!

An Ode to Tea challenge – Q

I was hesitant to finish this!  I loved keeping the last steep session around for the name alone.  This might be one of my favorite tea names ever.  Qing Pin!  Such a play on words.  But I only had so many teas for ‘Q’ so it was time to drink this up.  I wasn’t expecting much with the flavor due to the age…. but it’s still delicious!  Oh how I love Chinese black teas.   Before, I didn’t really say anything substantial other than it reminded me of Laoshan black, which isn’t my favorite.  I wouldn’t say this tastes like Laoshan black now.  Black teas don’t really taste like this anymore, so I’m surprised it is so gooood.  Three solid strong steeps.  Depth without bite or astringency. I’m GLAD it was hoarded! Raising the rating from an 82.  Also having an OLD Bao Zhong today and I feel like oolong also doesn’t taste like this anymore… maybe I’m on to something.

Steepster broke? This is the last tasting note. For some reason on my tealog page it has 8 likes, but on recent page, only 3 likes.

Nope, this actually is the newest note still. :P

I find there’s usually a delay with updates on the newest notes page. I assume it’s a caching thing.
