From Simpson & Vail

The man who would become Lewis Carroll was born as Charles Lutwidge Dodgson in January 1832. He spent his happy childhood under the tutelage of his Reverend father, and enjoyed creating fantastical stories for his ten siblings. It was not until after he had graduated university and became a lecturer of mathematics that he met Alice Liddell. He would entertain her and her sisters with the absurd stories that he later published as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. His most famous novels conveyed a childlike look at the seemingly arbitrary rules and customs of adult society.

A tea party plays a memorable role in Carroll’s most celebrated novel as the setting for Alice’s nonsensical meeting with the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. “A large rose-tree stood near the entrance of the garden” where, as the Mad Hatter told Alice earlier, “it’s always tea time.” To make our Lewis Carroll blend, we added our fragrant violet flavor to an Indian Black tea and Rose Congou tea, a China black that has been scented with rose petals during the drying process, to create a deep amber cup with an incomparable bouquet and a flavor that is absolutely heavenly.

Ingredients: Black Tea, Rose Congou tea, violet flavor, and malva flowers.

September 8 – World Literature Day: drink tea while reading a favorite book or story

I mentioned to my daughter that I needed to pick a tea and a book for the prompt today and I was torn. I am happily re-reading The Thursday Murder Club series but I also have the new Flavia de Luce, which I was planning to save for after surgery. I decided I would use Flavia for the prompt and my daughter asked if I had any literary themed teas. I told her that I do not at present. She asked if I would LIKE to have one, and I said…..”maybeeeeee.” Ha ha! New tea? Of course!

She went to her room and brought back this! She has been buying gifts to give me throughout my cancer treatment journey – so sweet and thoughtful!

This was on my wishlist because I love violet flavor. I wondered if the rose was going to overpower the violet but it doesn’t! The aroma of the dry leaf was pretty solidly balanced between between rose and violet but the violet might be just a tad stronger.

I made one small pot, using three teaspoons for 18 ounces if water at 200F. Steeped for four minutes. One steep only this time. I can’t get the sliders to go precisely to what I used so I am noting it here.

I would say this is violet forward but the rose is definitely there. The black tea base is pretty strong, exactly what I expect for a Congou.

Ashman does not like rose teas, but he wandered in and wanted to know what I was drinking. I told him it was a new tea and he could try a sip and if he liked it I would pour more. He did like it, and drank another small cup. I can’t guarantee that he LOVED it, but the rose was not enough to turn him off.

I might have to try this, I’m not a rose fan, but I do like violet. When is your surgery?

ashmanra

I find out on Thursday!

TeaEarleGreyHot

Upon seeing your WLD headline, I immediately thought that we need to have a World Tea Day! Shortly thereafter I realized that, akin to “Children’s Day”, in fact every day is tea day! Well, okay, many here probably already knew that the UN FAO says International Tea Day is May 21st. Right around the corner! More importantly, ASHMANRA, I do hope your surgery goes/went well, and I look forward to celebrating on May 21st with your observations!

ashmanra

Thank you, TeaEarleGreyHot! I will mark down May 21 for a big tea celebration!

I started shopping for my birthday a few days early. I thought that I’ve been making a good dent in my stash, so it was time for more tea. Right? Right. I blindly bought this tea without reading about the ingredients; I based my purchase on the tin art! The Mad Hatter and Alice sharing a cuppa? I’m all in. Sure, the tin held 4oz of tea, but it paid off. Not only did I find the tin to be intriguing, but the tea was wonderful, too. I opened the tin, and it was bursting to life with violets and roses—a bouquet of scents—and the need to drink it was immediate.

I brewed this at 195F and steeped for 3 mins. The aroma of the florals intensified with the hot water and my mouth was watering. My need for this cup was overwhelming! Sure enough, it was bursting with flavor! The sweetness of the violets and roses were hitting the palate, and the sensory levels were elevated. I love a floral tea which this hit on all points. I’ll keep in the back of my mind to try this one iced over the weekend; however, I’m set on having this one as a regular in my cupboard.

Flavors: Floral, Flowers, Rose, Sweet, Violet

ashmanra

Now I want it! It has been on my list of someday teas from S&V.

MadHatterTeaReview

ashmanra, I hope that you like it as much as I do! It’s a beautifully flavorful tea!

tea-sipper

This was an obvious purchase for you, to follow your steepster name! It’s definitely one of my favorite floral blends.

MadHatterTeaReview

@tea-sipper- I’ll admit that was 85% the reason why I purchased it. Lol. However, it was a delicious tea, so all the more of a reason to be happy with the purchase!

I didn’t check the ingredients for this one when I picked it, so the floral scent was very surprising! I’m not a big rose fan, but luckily violet was the dominating flavor. (I also cheated and tried not to scoop up much rose) I added milk and sweetener, and it’s like having one of those violet candies. Again, I’m not a floral tea person, so I would reach for this one very infrequently (but I would reach for it!) I think it does a really good job at accomplishing its flavor goals. The second steep is quite strong as well. Thanks for sharing this one tea-sipper! I’m really glad I got to try it.

I love that they offer these literary blends! I’ll have to pick up the sampler next time…

AJRimmer

I think I’ve only tried 2-3 of the literary blends so far, but I definitely enjoyed them!!

Cameron B.

It’s a bit dumb that they only offer them in 4-ounce sizes…

AJRimmer

Yeah, they only sell some of their herbal blends in the 4 oz size too, so I just buy one or two on each order so I’m not overwhelmed. It’s a lot of tea!

Mastress Alita

It kills me they only offer some of their teas in 4 oz. sizes. Unless it’s a bulky, heavy fruit blend, that much leaf for just little ol’ me is not feasible.

tea-sipper

This is the rare one I bought a tin of, because it’s a great floral tea.

Discovery Advent Tea #14
We start off robust. Strong. My rose flavor. Like a rose a garden. But if you steep it too long it turns unpleasant. Like spraying perfume straight into your mouth.

Ashmanra’s sipdown challenge – April 2023 Tea #8 -April 29 – National Sense of Smell Day: Drink your most aromatic tea!

I brought this one in the gallon bag of teas for the trip, specifically for the aromatic prompt for today.  It sure is floral!  One of my floral faves.  Unfortunately, allergies today are preventing me from much sense of smell today anyway.  But otherwise, it’s a lovely, perfect base for flavors of violet and rose. And a great balance of them too. Not a sipdown.

Marshall Weber

Had no idea that was even a holiday! I’m glad to celebrate with some beautiful tea :).

tea-sipper

Neither did I, but ashmanra alerted us to this odd holiday! haha

ashmanra

That sounds like a lovely tea! How have I overlooked it on their website?

tea-sipper

ashmanra – probably because you can only get this blend as four ounces unless you grab it in the author sampler? I tried it in the sampler and loved it, so then bought a tin of it.

ashmanra

I have far too much rose tea at the moment, but once I get low I think I will try this one!

tea-sipper

I hope you like it when you try it!
