Grown in the high desert regions of the Cederberg Mountains, the shoots of Rooibos have been hand gathered by South Africans for generations. It is prepared like a traditional tea, undergoing meticulous drying (oxidation) and cutting. Organic Red Mellow Bush has an earthy vanilla taste and pleasing orange color with hints of autumn straw. Well, as soon as I poured the water on this one I knew there had to be some vanilla flavoring in there, because for whatever reason, teas with vanilla always seem to stink during brewing. At least to me. However, they usually taste pretty darn good, and this was no exception. I liked this tea as well as I’ve liked other red teas. Quite nice when you want an herbal with a little more flavor.
I was on the verge of ‘neutral’ rating on this one but it’s a tad better than neutral so I gave it a thumbs up but barely. Not that it’s bad just not wonderful. It does remind me a little bit of the African Autumn by Harney & Sons tho…or reminiscent of. The pre-steep aroma had me thinking I wouldn’t care for it…it smelled to sweet for me but it mellowed quite a bit after steeping. The color is a nice reddish brown. The taste is a little sweet and a little Rooibos but on the light side…almost like it’s missing something or needs to be stronger. I did over steep so it’s not that I didn’t give it enough time…got this in a sample pack so I don’t think I will be buying large quantities of it anytime soon.
