From DAVIDsTEA

Never heard of yellow tea? That might be because this is the very first one we’ve ever carried. And this exceptional, top quality tea is so fresh, we rushed it to our shelves the moment it was plucked and dried. Grown in very small quantities, this is a special production just for us, from the tiny Junshan Tea Garden in Hunan province. It’s made in a similar fashion to green teas, with an extra step called “piled withering” said to help create super-healthy probiotics in the tea. Most importantly? It is absolutely delicious. Mellow and sweet, with a beautiful orange-tinged liquor, it’s best enjoyed over several steeps. Limited edition!

I just tried this lovely tea, although it’s discontinued. I really enjoyed it, it reminded me of green tea. This is the only yellow tea I’ve tried. It was very light. I would definitely drink this again.

I decided to drink this while I did some personal calculations.
My results were this
1 . To pay for my LLC filing cost it would take the profit of 47 ounces of tea being sold. That’s a rather disappointing statistic… but, I want to keep my prices low for customers.
2. This yellow tea is very similar to a sheng tea which is very odd because it isn’t…

It is smooth and delicate though, not something to just gulp down.

This tea has a very delicate brew. Its almost exactly alike Bai Hao Yin Zhen (Silver needle) except for the after taste. It leaves a sweet caramel sap linger in your mouth. I enjoy the aroma of Orchid, hay and nectar as it fills my tea room. I was only able to get a few intense steeps out of this brew with my gaiwan. Being a franchise sold tea it is still good quality. The brew is a golden iridescent color which I enjoy. I love the way the light dances around my cup and bowl. Altogether it is a very nice lazy morning brew :)

This was my first yellow tea ever, and what an introduction. I love this tea. It’s delicate and brews this brilliant honeyed yellow. It’s brews smooth and naturally sweet, almost like honeysuckle. There are notes of hay, fresh grass, and a lingering floral note with each sip. The flavour will stay with you long after your cup is done. I’m excited to check out more yellow teas as that honey-flavour is a very typical note for them.

Day #19 of tea – Time for a posh selection, haha. I got some of this when I had some free tea, and it went away almost immediately after. This is a different sort of green tea – the flavour is unlike any I’ve ever had.

What a surprise this was!! Wonderful copper golden color and aromas of dry wood, citrus and cooked squash. Lemon rind and mellow fruity sweetness with a touch of vegetation on the palate and a very unique flavor of oil-cured beldi olives adding to the somewhat brisk finish. I usually hate most of the offerings from DAVIDsTEA, but this one was notable. Not amazing, but it is something worth trying.

This is the first yellow tea I’ve tried and the only one that Davids Tea offers. They dry smell of the leaf is slightly muted, smelling sort of dusty, earthy, and grassy. I had the baristas at David’s brew this for me, so I hope the temp and time are good to go. The first sip feels almost caramel-like with something sweet, almost like honey. Further tasting brings out fruitier notes, maybe currant, maybe peach, maybe grape. This is lighter and nuttier than the other limited tea from Davids, the Blue Mountain Twirl. I’m not sure what yellow teas are known for, but this does feel somewhere between a green and a black tea, with light color and grassier, hay flavors, along with something tart and savory. I think I like the Blue Mountain Twirl better than Yellow Gem because prefer slightly bolder, brasher flavors, but both are delicious to this inexperienced tea sipper. Worth the try!

yellow teas actually fall between the green and white categories. During production, the leaves are introduced to an additional step of adding a little heat to mellow the flavour further. As a result they get the honey-like flavour you described. If you’re more partial to deeper flavours but like the smoothness of this tea I recommend trying both Napal Black, Sheng Pu’erh and Wild Black Yuunan by David’s. I also recommend Adagio’s Yunnan Golden Curls.

Thank you for the info! Will definitely give those teas a try.

Typically, when going to DAVIDsTea to hang out with friends, the to-go teas are quite underleafed. I either have to pay a bit more for them to add another tea bag or just suffer silently through a weak tea. I do wish they had smaller cup sizes.. With all of that said, I was quite happy to note that this tea held up to the amount of water in the to-go cup. It was a pleasant yellow tea. I cannot say great things about it nor can I say bad things about it. Slight bit of astringency, mostly smooth, a bit vegetal, a bit creamy, a bit sweet. Though, I consumed this tea after drinking The Full Moon at The Slaughtered Lamb, so my judgement may have been a bit impaired. Still, a nice experience. Would have again… maybe after another Full Moon or Blood Bath.

Hard to tell how this one tastes – I think I’m getting a bit too much of the unfiltered water affecting the flavour here. I can tell there’s a honey sweetness and a fair dose of minerally notes… but to what extent those are attributable to the tea vs. the water is tough to say. I think this may be a good tea (though lighter than Blue Mountain Twirl), but I can’t say for certain until I try it again in another setting.

I love yellow tea and so I had to buy this one as soon as it was available…great price for yellow tea. The tea was refreshing and it was fresh…a newly opened bag, such a treat. I absolutely love pure tea and this tea was rewarding. Yes, I have had better yellow tea, but for 17.50 for 50 grams this is a great tea. It has a vegetal sweet cauliflower taste with hints of honey and fruit…a very pleasurable mixture of sweet and vegetal.

Sounds good – I have never had a yellow tea so will have to pick some of this up to try.

Reyna

I agree with you on the price – Teavana is almost twice the price for their yellow tea. Have you tried it? How does it compare to this one?

RandomCarpeDiem

No I have not tried the Teavana yellow tea…but I think I might just to compare…thanks for the suggestion.
