Brewed this sheng fast and hard – warrior style!
Stone fruit, green apple, and plenty of astringency are the key flavors here. Also, a heavy sour top note dominates the mouth.

Just released today on Bitterleaf Teas’ site. This is an apparent ‘banzhang’ tea. Banzhang (班章) is a growing area in Bulangshan (布朗山) that is known for high quality teas. Great notes of sweetness, bitterness, astringency, stone fruit, wood, and smoke in this tea.

I had high hopes for this tea – I love everything about jingmai teas. Unfortunately, this tea is all smoke and age. Great underlying flavors and amount of aging for 15 years, but there’s so much smoke that the tea is overpowered, even after 11 steeps. I can’t, in good conscious, say that this is a “good” tea or that I would ever try/buy it.

Surprise review from someone in hiding for months…
Based on a true story
Why is Pretty Girls a motherfucker? Is it just because of the wrapper (https://www.instagram.com/p/BBAQWzIl_lQ/?taken-by=paxl13)? Let me tell you why.
Take a chunk off of your cake. Don’t even measure it, just eyeball it to about 10g or whatever suits you. Okay, yeah, it’s pricier than your “average” shou, but what is average when you’re only spending $2 for a session of tea? Anyway. it’s not too compressed, so just a quick rinse – or even drink it if you don’t like wasting tea.
Here we go, steeps 1-6 come on strong like a pretty girl. Taste all the rich depth of flavor from the gongting and highest grade leaves. So smooth and creamy at first – notes of earthy wood and hints of chocolate tips. Keep going to later steeps, transitioning to sweetness for the long haul. You think this relationship is meant to last forever, the taste lingering on your tongue.
And then it hits you.
The lower grade leaves try to carry the flavor for a little bit longer. Reminiscent of what once was.. you find yourself on steep 15, struggling to feel the same warmth of your first few steeps of exciting energy. It’s gone. Time to move on to another tea.
And that is why Pretty Girls is a motherfucker.
I was quite enamored of this tea when I first had it, and today I took it out for a spin again, this time paying closer attention to the flavor of each steep. I have to say, your review is pretty much spot on. That tea is absolutely gorgeous in the middle steeps, then she pretty much dumps you without so much as a “I’ll call you….”
If Paul offered (as a cake or as loose) whichever part of this blend that makes this cake so incredible, I would buy that in a heartbeat, and I’d happily pay a premium for it.
Very woody tea with notes of leather. A slight sweetness persisting in the later steeps. Not a tea that I would seek out, but a pleasant experience.

I hear you about this one, I’m not to fond of wet storage, although I can respect and appreciate some of the traits. I still have some of this sample and even the Private Order 7542 which is also pretty wet stored.
Thanks Brenden! :D
Very clean shou, no fermentation flavors. Strong notes of caramel, cocoa.. slightly sweet. Didn’t last as long as I was hoping – only got about 8 steeps before the color faded, but still good flavor in the following steeps. Great entry-level shou for those who might be new to puerh. No off-putting flavors, delicious consistency.

Wonderfully thick and rich.. Notes of earth and spice, a nice little kick. Smooth and creamy textured shou, mostly clear of unwanted fermentation flavors. I think this one would get better with even more age.
Thank you Brenden for this delicious sample :)
