From DAVIDsTEA

Soothing and smoothing

People have been buzzing about mulberry leaves for all sorts of reasons lately, but we just can’t stop talking about how good they taste. Combined with macadamia nuts, they make for a tea that is sweet, complex, and slightly earthy. Do they really have tons of other benefits, as the health freaks claim? We’re too happy to care. Caffeine-free. (MK Kosher)

Ingredients: Mulberry leaf, organic macadamia nuts, natural flavouring*.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I borrowed a green cardigan from a colleague so I could get a free cup of tea at David’s. This blend smelled lovely in the tin and seemed suitably green. The steeped aroma is nutty and creamy. The flavor is macadamia, general nuttiness, cream, and maybe a hint of vanilla. I actually find it hard to believe there’s no sinensis in this blend, as it’s heftier than a lot of other herbals. It also resteeps decently. This blend might be my new substitute for Butiki’s Pistachio Ice Cream.

This is the only tea to date that has made me say “Holy shit this is amazing” upon the first sip. I don’t like overly fruity anything (I hate overly fruity cocktails, overly fruity candle scents, overly fruity perfumes), and this is sweet in a far more complex way than just a bunch of fruits blended together. It has more subtle, woodsy notes.

I’m just going to say it and get it out of the way. It looks like swamp water. To be more graphic, this tea is what my grandfather would’ve called baby-shit green. You’re lucky you smell so good, Mulberry Magic! As a fan of nuts in general and macadamia nuts in particular, I really liked this. Tasted like a macadamia nut cookie (this was with the addition of honey), and some green and leafy flavour that I really can’t put my finger on. Maybe once I’ve tried more tea, I’ll be able to peg what that is exactly, but for now it’s just “leafy”. My immense powers of deduction tell me it’s probably the mulberry leaves (I know, right?!) but I’m not sure what it’d be best compared to. It isn’t too brazen at least, it isn’t like grass clippings or anything, so I found it to be quite a nice sip nearing the end of the day.

… I munched on a dry leaf and it kind of reminds me of broccoli, of all things.

I bought this for my sister since she is an avid fan of both herbal teas and macadamia nuts. The macadamia in this is delicious, smooth, almost creamy. It’s what I like to call a “dessert” tea. Very rich and flavorful.

This one came from Dexter. I’ve never had a mulberry leaf tea before, so this promises to be interesting. The leaves are twisty and curly, they kind of remind me of bao zhong. The color is a medium-dark green with blue notes, similar to evergreen. There appear to be some chunks of macadamia nut or something similar mixed in.

I must say, the color is the steeped tea is somewhat… alarming. Honestly, it looks like swamp water and the fact that it’s a touch murky isn’t helping. :P It has an interesting sweet, almost creamy aroma that reminds me of sugar cookies. This is an interesting one. On one hand, it kind of does have a cookie-like taste to it. On the other, it also has a seaweed/steamed spinach flavor about it, and the two together is a bit of an odd combination. I’m not really sure what to think of this one…

It is a really weird colour, isn’t it! Perhaps more swampy than Swampwater…

I’ve had this a couple of times now. The first time I tried it I remember thinking it tasted like butter cookies. When I drank it on Friday it was more like nutty cookies – no real surprise there due to the macadamia nuts. But I have noticed I can only have a couple of mugs of this at a time. There’s something in the background that doesn’t sit well with me.

Me too, I have a mug or two and then I’m done with it for a while. The base gets to me, I think.

Yeah, the base is too much.

I picked this up looking for a replacement for my beloved Pistachio Cream. It’s no Pistachio Cream, but it’s beautiful and unique.

It’s got a lot of really rich, buttery, nutty notes, and then a bit of sweetness, and some vegetal notes that make me think of kale, plus some earthiness and umami. It has similar notes and yet is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.

I’m really into these mulberry leaf tisanes, and I’m very glad I picked this one up.

It’s hot macadamia sugar cookies with spinachy olive after notes, and while that sounds so gross it just really, really works. Really buttery too.

I’ve gone in depth with this one before though – and I don’t have anything additional to add to it. It’s just really good; a great herbal staple.

Hot macadamia sugar cookies sounded great hah.

This is an amazing tea. From first scent to last drop, Mulberry Magic casts a spell on you. A sweet, rich and complex nose on both the leaves and the brewed tea sets the perfect expectation for an enchanting rush of creamy, nutty richness.

Strong notes of honey-caramel are set against the richness of the mulberry leaf infusion. This tea is perfect for late nights, curled up with a book. Keep this tea in mind as an excellent dessert tea. Not only does it have the body to stand on it’s own as a dessert, but it will pair well with assertive classics such as New York Cheesecake and Crème Brûlée.

I had this cup to-go yesterday afternoon at my local DT, and I have to admit it was quite a pleasant surprise. It was one of the teas of the day yesterday, and based on my small iced sample, I asked for a hot cup with no sweetener.

I definitely get the naturally sweet flavours that other people have mentioned in other reviews here. It doesn’t remind me of vanilla cake so much as it does of white chocolate cookies. This is pretty weird, because I really really dislike white chocolate, so finding a tea that I LIKE that reminds me of it is surprising.

I may get some of this to keep in my cupboard once I it the end of my tea buying hiatus. However, I know that Yunomi.us also sells mulberry leaf tea. Should I just buy it plain from there or stick to this version here?
