From Butiki Teas

The Red Queen Cupcake was inspired by one of Chef Chloe’s (winner of Cupcake Wars) cupcakes, which has a chocolate and espresso cake with vanilla frosting and fresh strawberries. The Red Queen Cupcake utilizes our Dinjoye Estate Assam black tea and highlights strawberry, chocolate, and espresso flavors. The espresso adds depth to chocolate flavor, while the strawberry adds sweetness and freshness. Mild vanilla, cream, and cake notes can be also detected. We highly recommend adding brown crystal sugar, which will produce a very decadent treat and will intensify the flavors and develop the vanilla.

Ingredients: Dinjoye Estate Assam, Chocolate Chips (vegan), Freeze-Dried Strawberries, Safflower, Amaranth, Organic Natural Flavorings (vegan)

Recommended Brew Time: 3 minutes
Recommended Amount: 1 level teaspoons of tea for 8oz of water
Recommended Temperature: 190 F – 212 F (boiling)

Oooo! This is neat! I get high notes from the strawberry and base notes from coffee and chocolate merging. Adding sugar brings out the sweet and tart of the berry for me. Adding cream changes it into a cup of delicious! They berry is more muted and the chocolate more prominent. Aaaaand my cup is empty. Now for the big decision… do I buy more of this while it is still available?!

Oooo I like this a lot more than I thought I would! I would prefer a touch more strawberry, but I’m really enjoying the chocolate/coffee thing that’s going on here. This feels like it would be particularly good on a cold morning because of the roasty espresso flavor. Yum!

Today is a Red Queen Cupcake kind of day. I told myself to indulge in a Butiki tea or two today because I’ve been letting them all sit in a pretty box in my cupboard waiting… waiting for what? For them to get old? Nuts to that.

This has lost a bit of its flavour, but at least I can still taste the chocolate and coffee notes. The strawberry note has suffered the most.

I just hope this won’t make me nauseated because I haven’t had anything for breakfast yet and it’s 2pm. Whoops, and now potential tenants have walked in to view the place. Farewell for now!

Stephanie

I love this one

TheKesser

yes, enjoy the teas while they are still fresh!! I have learnt the hard way to not hold onto teas for too long ‘cause honestly, it’s so sad when you go to have them again and they aren’t anything like the amazing-ness you remember ‘cause they’ve gone stale.

I got my Butiki order earlier this week and have been having a lovely time trying all these lovely teas out. Also, kicking myself for not ordering Butiki sooner and wondering what can compare when the shop closes…..

The smell of this one to me is espresso – I had added a little rock sugar and cream. The taste tho, is such a delicious strawberry. I taste the chocolate, the espresso, but the sweet natural tasting strawberry is the star. As my cup cools, ( and I guess I have a little more sugar in the bottom of the cup), this does taste like a delicious cake, with dark chocolate ganache and succulent strawberries….

I was hoping to work my way through my Butiki box and try more tea….but I want another cuppa this delicious one.

Another in my huge backlog to tasting notes.
Thanks Inkling! What an enjoyable tea. I love the dessert teas and this really fits that description. Love the dark chocolate and strawberry with a nice black base. I’ve had a lot of dessert teas with rooibos lately and I’m getting a bit tired of them. This is another good substitute for sweets and guess what…. I’ve finally made my weight loss goal!!

I’ve lost 40 lbs, and am now in the Weight Watchers Lifetime program which will help in keeping off the weight. I’m walking 4.5 miles a day and doing strength training 30 min. 4X’ a week. Whoopie! I FEEL GREAT!!!

YUM!!! This is my first Butiki tea and I love it. Sweet strawberry flavor with rich chocolate notes and a nice black base. Teas with chocolate don’t generally re-steep well, but I tried it with this one anyway. Definitely less chocolate flavor, but still a nice strawberry vanilla taste the second time around. Stacy suggests to add sugar, but I found mine really didn’t need it. I will savor every teaspoon of this one for sure!

Another timolino full of yum. Scraping the last few cups out of my bag. Haven’t pulled the trigger on more of this yet but did do a re-steep today to try and make what I have last just a little longer. Trying to get through that so I can get off to bed, and hopefully the caffeine won’t bother me tonight. Just not sure I can let it sit tonight & risk not getting to it in the morning.

Contemplating getting a Kindle. Mom keeps giving me books to read and I rarely pick up a real book unless I’m on vacation. I have read a couple on my phone though and have wondered if it would be a smart purchase to get me more into reading. I enjoy it, but rarely find the time for it. Any of you readers? Do you prefer real books or electronic versions ?

gmathis

Real books with real pages. Can’t use a Kindle in the bathtub ;) Lots of voracious readers hang around here—search the discussion boards for some good bookish conversations. What genre do you like?

Sil

real books. all the way.

Suziqzer

I figured there were a good number of readers on here. I haven’t read many books the last few years due to busy schedules and lack of time to do so. I also find myself reading forums too much to take the time to pick up a book… Something I want to change.

The books I have read more recently are The Shack & Crossroads by Wm. Paul Young, and Reunion by Jeff Bennington (my husband works with him), and Louisiana Longshot (a freebie ebook on Amazon just to try the whole electronic thing). I’ve read Karen Kingsbury and and Ted Dekker in the past. Most of what is listed here is Christian in some form although I’m not set in that. I enjoy science fiction/mystery for the most part I think if I had to label it. Throw in a little good medical stuff and that is cool too if it is done well. If I listed tv shows you might get a better idea :). Enjoy shows like CIS, NCIS, Once Upon a Time, Dr G, Eureka, Chuck, & loved!! Fringe!!

My mom is always going to the half price books store and is an avid reader. She is always trying to hand me books when she is done with them… Mostly Christian mystery. She does pick up some romance too sometimes, but not usually my thing. She would probably keep me loaded with books if she knew what author I reading, & if she could find it in the store she loves.

I keep hearing about books like the Hunger Games that set you in a different world. I have yet to pick any of them up because my brother loaned me his copy of 1984 and I hit a dull point and put it down. He keeps encouraging me to pick it up and try again because he almost did too and was glad he finished it.

True on the comment about the bathtub and a Kindle… Lol. Although my Hubby is more inclined to soak in the bath than I… I could see myself putting it in a ziplock bag just in case I dropped it.

Maybe I need to take advantage of my mom and the library as a resource for awhile and see if I can get back into reading before I invest and money on books and/or a kindle.

Dr Jim

I used to travel a lot for work and the kindle was a real Godsend. I could carry 200 books overseas with me and not worry about running out. I used to carry a dozen paperbacks then try to swap them with coworkers. now, however, I get 90% of my books from the library, but still occasionally buy for kindle.

carol who

I was a committed real book person until I tried a Kindle and haven’t read a real book since. I love it and I love having so many books on the kindle so I can change to a new book at any time. Also. What do you mean “no reading a kindle in the bath.” ???? I always read my Kindle in my bathtub. Unless you have a habit of dropping your books in the bath, you should have no problem with reading a Kindle in the bath. I currently have 197 books on my Kindle. I generally read about 2 books a week (I’m a fast reader) I love SF/Fantasy: Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffery, Sara Douglass, David Eddings, Diana Gabaldon. I also read a lot of spy/action/detective types and mysteries.

gmathis

Dee Henderson writes good, suspenseful Christian fiction that isn’t sticky-sweet—usually about military or emergency/police personnel; easy reads and short chapters. Anne Perry is my favorite mystery writer; she’s done several series, but her specialty is Victorian London.

Carol Who, I am the Queen of Klutzes…I wouldn’t dare ;)

Suziqzer

Loving all the comments! I can see there are people on both sides of the book vs kindle option, & several avid readers as I suspected. I’m still undecided if I’ll try one or not. I often find new gadgets fun, but they don’t always keep my attention. If I take the leap I’m thinking I’ll go with a cheaper model for trying it out. They have come way down in price since the first time I looked at them.

I’m with gmathis on being a klutz & being the one to drop a kindle if I tried to read it in the bath. A book is usually much less costly to replace ;). I might be brave enough to try it at some point if I had one. Maybe

Thanks for all the author recommendations too Dr. Jim & gmathis. I will have to do some looking at your suggestions. I have heard of a couple of the authors you mentioned & I think you made some good suggestions. I get bored if there isn’t enough going on in a storyline.

Tea for a cool and gray (finally) morning! There’s a lot going on in this blend: in addition to small, dark, typical Assam-looking tea leaves, there are large strawberry pieces, pink flowers, and an abundance of chocolate chips. I tasted one and it was very creamy and rich, not dry or bitter as I was expecting for some reason. The smell is invitingly rich and cake-like, very strawberries-and-cream with a touch of cocoa and espresso. Now the question of how does it taste? Many teas that smell like a decadent dessert end in tragedy in this department, but this one is quite delicious. The strawberry sweetness is very fresh but not over-the-top, and is tempered just right by the combination of espresso and a light natural astringency from the assam. The coffee fragrance as well as the chocolate flavor gets stronger with a longer brew time, probably due to the chocolate chips melting. And it is a very sweet, inviting sort of chocolatey note that takes me right back to childhood. This tea does have a very rich, almost buttery feel, so it may not be for everyone, but I found that doesn’t detract in this case. And on a final note, it brews up to the most beautiful, soft red color that has me wanting to take a picture of my teacup for the first time!

And now I’ll have to revise my profile so it no longer says I haven’t found a good chocolate-heavy tea yet…

Another one I received from Courtney – this is one I definitely would not have ordered for myself but was curious to try. I’m just very rarely a “coffee person” and also not super into chocolate either, but it sounded interesting and I was open to be surprised; just not enough to actually want to order it without trying it first.

I made it in my timolino so I could enjoy this one during my cleaning shift – which went pretty late into the night, so I figured a black would be good for keeping up my energy. I was honestly a little surprised that the most noticeably flavour in this was the very strong strawberry; and it was instantly a throwback to Butiki’s Ruby Pie which has the same very powerful and robust strawberry flavour.

Honestly; everything else in this blend just couldn’t hold a candle to the strawberry; I mean, yeah I could taste the chocolate and the espresso but it was all just so much lighter than that fruit flavour. I also got the cake part of it too, I guess – but again; much lighter/milder. I don’t know, overall I thought this was very tasty and enjoyable but not totally what I expected and given that the strawberry is so similar, imo, to Ruby Pie I probably wont consider restocking this one since I like Ruby Pie better.

But I can absolutely see the appeal of this one, just my general lack of enthusiasm for chocolate or coffee makes it a little less enticing (but again, it was still good).

Courtney

I’m glad the teas arrived and you got to try this one out. :)

I had a really rough week last week which lead me to buying more tea. I have been wanting to place an order for months with Butiki, but could never decide on what to buy last week I just decided to pick 3. Since I have been drinking an abundance of straight tea lately I decided to go with 3 of the flavored teas I had been wanting to try. This was one of them! Yum. This is really really good. Strawberry, chocolate, and espresso! The combination of the 3 is magic and no one flavor overtakes it for me. It is well blended with the base. I really like this one. For my first cup I didn’t add any sugar. I can see a tad bit of sugar bringing out the strawberry flavor a bit. I will have to give this way a try as well.

Cheri

I had that really rough week a little bit back, and went on a tea buying splurge. Yours was relatively mild, comparatively.

I think this is such a good tea. Stacy does a great job.
