sipdown! this was a free sample with my american tea room order and not something i would have chosen for myself given that i strongly dislike coconut in 90% of all teas.

I can’t rate this tea, because i could barely drink it. the coconut smell was too overpowering, so i managed a sip before having to give up. What i will say, is that this DOES taste like macaroons. If that’s your thing, it’s worth trying out :)

QueenOfTarts

I hate it when coconut is too strong.. I’ve never gotten a free sample from ATR with my order… Lucky you!

Sil

Really? I thought that was standard with them….how weird heh

Terri HarpLady

I love Macaroons!

Sil

Oh god really? Do you want me to send this to you? I dropped the last little bit in the box for the girls here but if you actually WANT to try a flavoured tea, it’s all yours lol

Terri HarpLady

eh, it’s probably artificial flavoring?
If it’s not artificial, I’d love it

American Tea Room

Queen of Tarts – every order comes with a free sample. Please contact us directly with your order and we can rectify that! tea@americantearoom

American Tea Room

Terri- there is nothing artificial in ANY of our teas.

Terri HarpLady

Glad to hear that!

Sipdown!! (of sorts as I am sending the rest of my sample to Dexter)

When I opened the package to send some of this away for a swap, the cacao caught my eye. Also, the rooibos smelled a bit strong so I decided to make myself a cup and see what I thought.

Tastewise, this is heavy on the rooibos with a hint of cacao. There is a tad bit of sweetness but tbh, this is not that much better than the Republic of Tea teabags I sent away (a bit better though as I was able to take a few sips before throwing it away as opposed to just one). This cup got poured and the sample got sealed to be shipped away. Hopefully Dexter will have better luck with this.

LOL Hmmmmm interesting. I’m not afraid of “heavy on the rooibos”, but 15 and a dump is not encouraging. Oh well, I’ll try it and let you know….

VariaTEA

Remember though, I have gone off of the cacao tea. That probably played a role in it so I am hoping for the best. Of course, if it doesn’t work for you, you can pass it right along and it might eventually find a home. Or it will leave a bunch of people dissatisfied and happy they didn’t order it themselves.

Thank you VariaTEA for sending me this sample.
I really like this, it reminds me of Cacao from Herbal Infusions.
Mostly cocoa with a little bit of coconut and a hint of vanilla (thankfully I am not getting any of the licorice listed in the ingredients). I steeped this at a pretty low temp and didn’t really get much rooibos flavor – thanks MissB for sharing that tip, it’s really working for me.
All in all, nice little dessert tea. :))

VariaTEA

I am glad you enjoyed this. It definitely was not for me so I am glad it went somewhere it is being appreciated.

Dexter

LOL Have no fear, it’s found a good home – it won’t be around here for very long. :))

VariaTEA

Yay! Gotta love swaps :)

MissB

Oh, yay on both loving this, AND finding a sweet spot yourself with the rooibos!

TheTeaFairy

You make this sound great (even for a rooibos, haha!)

I got a sample size of this with my ATR order. Upon opening the package I was very skeptical because this just smells like some nasty old liquor. I was assuming I’d end up hating it!

The flavor isn’t bad actually. Yes, it is rooibos with a mild cocoa and coconut flavor. I wouldn’t exactly say it reminds me of a macaroon but at least I don’t want to spit it out. Not bad on its own but better with a bit of soymilk. I’m really glad this ended up tasting a lot better than it smells. I love coconut anything but this isn’t cutting it for me somehow.

Not destined to be a favorite of mine but it is drinkable…

Ehhhh…. can’t really review this one properly, unfortunately. Opened up the well-sealed bag given to me by Sil – it smelled like vomit. Classic coconut rancidity, I’m quite sure. Anyhow, I gagged a bit and brewed some up anyways (when you know that it’s just rancid coconut, and you’re not brewing up chunks of puke, I can handle at least taking a sip). Brewed up, less barfy aroma, more like it’s supposed to smell… but there were still hints of upchuck. A sip revealed distinct flavours of cacao husk (yum), rooibos (meh… wasn’t great), and… well… rancid coconut. It was tough to taste past the coconut, but I don’t think this would be a blend I would enjoy anyhow – although I do like cacao, the rooibos adds an off-flavour that I’m not fond of.

Disclaimer: This tea has obviously gone off. The rating reflects my impression of the tea as I feel it would be without the rancidity; I’m not fond of rooibos.

I hate how coconut blends go off so fast. Reminds me that I have an open package at home that I need to drink up quickly.

Sil

that seems rather quick for it to go “off” 4 months?

Kittenna

Yeah. I was thinking that too… I knew I hadn’t had that one sitting around for all that long.

Jude

Thanks for the smile this morning, not the kind of vivid imagery one expects in a tea review :)

Kittenna

Hahaha :D

I’m having this with a 3 day old fancy donut that fell on the floor.
This tea goes with everything!!

I just spent a couple hours organizing my teas and putting a bunch on new ones in tins.
It’s beautiful and exciting, but now I’m exhausted.
I literally have my feet up :)

this tea was actually not very delicious.
sorry bummer town.
i think i need to just give up and keep my caffeine free tea simple. as in ginger and lemon and mint teas only. the basics.
they are what i drink.

OMGsrsly

You are hilarious (I’d totally do that too. Donuts!). :)

Shmiracles

i mean, it’s just the floor. baby olivia crawls around on it all day, and in a battle of donut vs. floor, donut will always win duh.

I got this today in my American Tea Room order as a free sample along with 2OTHERS! Yay for being a steepster! I loved my mom homemade macaroons she use to make when I was a little girl. This dry leaf definitely smells of rooibos, however, steeps this definitely smells of fresh baked macaroons. That gooey coconutty goodness. I assume this is a take on chocolate dipped macaroons, hence the blend including cacao husks. It’s does also give it that baked toasty flavor as well. The coconut is present but not over powering. I’m really surprisingly enjoying this tea. A lot of people are comparing it to chocolate which I have yet to taste. Well I give this a two thumbs up. American Tea Room definitely did really good with my free samples!

Kinda surprised no one else has reviewed this tea, especially since there are a few stellar reviews on ATR’s website.

To be completely honest I bought a sample size of this (I really love sample sizes!) before I could pick out that licorice root is not my favorite additive to teas. I think licorice root to me is like rooibos for others… and yes, there’s rooibos in here too. Double whammy!

Anyway, out of the package the tisane smells chocolately and creamy like ATR’s Choco*Laté. But I’m pretty sure I’m smelling the licorice root in there too, but it’s faint. Brewed 10 oz. of water with 4 tsp. of tisane. 30ish minutes later I taste the warmed version. Hit in the face with chocolatey licorice root… Sigh

Iced, the taste is more chocolate with much less in-your-face licorice. Better. A bit of creamer, and the licorice mellows out into the background. I kind of feel silly adding sweetener because it really doesn’t need it at all, but it I do anyway and I think I like it best this way.

If I had to choose between this and Choco*Laté, I’m gonna choose the latter merely for the fact that the licorice root is kind of a downer to me. They taste rather similar anyway.

Received my American Tea Room order exactly as anticipated, and only two business days after ordering. Impressive!

I grabbed a bunch of samples, and this was one of them. One liter of tea used up the entire sample, so this is a sipdown as well.

First smell impression was an actual macaron from some upscale French patisserie, along with a faint floral note. Steeped, it smells cocoa-y for the most part, with a bit of something else that eludes me.

The first sips confuzzle me a bit. Cocoa is smooth and very present, with something taming it down like vanilla or coconut. Floral notes have disappeared, and there’s a cakey sweetness left after the sip is finished. I can imagine this as a lovely latte, decadent and pastry-like. However all I want is a sweet fix right now before I try and sleep at, yes, 8:23am. Such is the life of a single parent whose most creative time (2am) coincides with her youngest’s late night coughing fits/snack requests/tv show watching attempts.

Sweetened with Truvia, I get the good kind of buttery flaky pastry and creamy coconut, while the cocoa turns a bit darker/bitter (like raw caocao, this is a good bitter). It’s decadent and delicious, and I think I’ll add this to my reserve order list.

hmmmm, you might like dammann freres oolong chataigne…..

MissB

I love oolongs, however they seem to hate me as of late. I’m more than willing to try, it may just be a waste of really lovely and expensive tea though, and I’d hate that.

JustJames

hmmmm, i’m willing to send you some in our swap. if nothing else you can happily sniff it? it’s quite lovely to smell. very chameleon-esque. =0) i reserve the right to invent words.

MissB

Heh, as you can well tell, I too make up words often. :) Love it! Send away! I’ll brew a small amount and pass the rest along if my stomach decides to play like a bad sport.

Hmm. I was expecting to like this more than I did because I love coconut. The coconut is definitely there, but there is another taste I don’t really like – the cacao husks, maybe? Slightly roasted, almost bitter, dark tasting. Added some sugar, which helped a bit, but it is still not my favorite.
