Smells great, much like American Tea Room’s Choco-Late…guess I know now I dig cacao husks as a caffeine-free dessert blend ingredient. Gives it that cheap packet hot cocoa feel. The coconut lends a toasty element I really dig too. I think this would be pretty much interchangeable with Choco-Late in the colder months as a caffeine-free after-dinner treat; they’re similar enough that having both on hand at the same time would be redundant, but their similarity means two options at any given time to fill this niche for creamy cocoa-y richness after 5pm when ordering from ATR in case one’s out of stock.

I almost didn’t order this because of the reviews but thought a sample couldn’t hurt in the end. Yeeeeeah. Tearing the bag open, soap flakes were screaming at me. The last time I bought a coconut, it was ridiculously soapy in flavour, and as a result, I haven’t bought another one since. Now I’m revisiting that experience.

The rooibos base is a little stronger but this is where the sweet licorice root plays a great part in aiding to cover that, along with the soapiness, up a bit. I don’t taste any vanilla, but the cacao husks are at least slightly noticeable too.

This would have been a lot better if a) this contained better coconut and b) there were more cacao husks. I’d mix the rest of my sample with Tisano cacao however that’s all packed up in a box and 100 km away so no can do.

Fjellrev, how many servings would you say come in an A.T.R. sample? I’m thinking of ordering some, but at $4 each, I’m hoping they make more than 1 or 2 cups.

Sil

this one turned rancid really quick for me from what i remember.

Fjellrev

The samples all weigh approximately 15g so you can get at least 4 regular-sized cups, so it’s pretty decent.

It seems like everyone’s arrives rancid. You’d think they’d try to fix this problem.

Bummer. Now I have to go see if I have any of this. LOL.

So this was a sample I got from ATR when I went there last.
They always seem to be promoting this tea, so I was curious about it. But I wouldn’t have ever bought a sample of it.
I could taste the cocoa and chocolate the most, but also there was a weird flavor that I can’t put my finger on…think it might have been the licorice root and coconut that just made it taste funky. It’s a very odd tea, definitely not going to drink again. And it definitely doesn’t remind me of a macaroon…like at all.
But I guess I’m glad I got to try it over all. I’m gonna have to find another home for this one too…onto the list it goes. xD

It shocks me what teas some companies choose to represent themselves.

Ost

But a lot of people really seem to like it. You know me, Albertocanfly! I have weird taste buds!

Tehehe, that’s the truth! But someone has to. :]

I actually feel bad writing this review. I have nothing against American Tea Room, and they have many terrific teas. I’m actually getting overtones of vomit off this one. I do already know I don’t love licorice root, but that’s usually a problem with the aftertaste. But the other components, coconut, cocoa, rooibos, well, I usually love those on their own. They just really don’t come together well for me here. It makes me happy that others have enjoyed this one because I don’t want to think it could possibly be this bad for everyone.
