From 52teas

I was pretty excited when people asked that this tea be included in the vote for the 2016 12 Teas of Christmas, and even happier when this tea turned out to be one of the top vote getters. This has been one of the more memorable 52Teas blends for me – I love coconut! – so I was really happy to have the opportunity to reblend it.

The original description of this tea said:

Our Coconut Cream Pie flavored black tea has been one of our bestsellers here at Zoomdweebie’s since we opened. In addition to the pouches of this tea that we’ve sold, we sell a LOT of beverages made from this tea, in particular, this is probably our all time bestselling iced tea latte, one sip of which has led people to exclaim, “That’s like coconut cream pie in a glass!” I’ve also been frequently challenged on our assertion that our tea lattes are all fat-free, particularly with this tea.

It is simply so decadent, so wonderfully sweet and satisfying, that people cannot believe that we didn’t just liquefy a slice of coconut cream pie and serve it to them in a glass.

For the 52teas version of this tea, we are adding some honking-big flakes of unsweetened coconut to our premium black tea blend along with coconut and vanilla flavors.

So, obviously, I needed to change up the recipe somewhat because the black tea that I use is different from the ones utilized by Frank. I started with my black tea base of organic Indian and Chinese teas. I did use some “honking-big flakes of unsweetened coconut” as well as some vanilla beans and calendula petals.

This is very coconut-y, very creamy and oh-so-yummy! It’s been a while since I’ve had some of Frank’s version of this tea, but I’d say that I did pretty well with this blend! If my review of this tea is any indication – I think my black tea might be a bit stronger than the original version – but the other flavors are on point!

organic ingredients: black teas, coconut, calendula petals, vanilla beans and natural flavors.

This is another solid black tea (re)blend from 52teas. I love a good coconut tea, especially those with black tea bases, so this blend is right up my alley. While the coconut flavor is really outstanding and there’s a nice creamy flavor, this tea reminds me more of coconut custard/pudding that of coconut cream pie…coconut cream pie filling, perhaps. One of my favorite components of pie is the crust, so I’m really missing even a hint of pie crust or pastry. I’m happy it was included in the 12 Days of Christmas sampler, but it’s not something that I need to add to my collection.

On the ninth day of Christmas my true love gave to me… Coconut Cream Pie Black Tea!

Frustratingly, many small events prevented me from enjoying my first cup this morning. Long story long, I usually filter my own water in large glass jugs with a stick of binchotan charcoal inside. But the last few days I have been without water on account of some stupid plumbing issues involving a dishwasher, a new disposal, 12 chopsticks, and some aggressive mice. (That may be another story for another blog…) I ran out of drinking/tea water last night and forgot to fill my water filtration vessels. Woke up late the next morning to plumbers fighting off the King mouse to hook up our kitchen sink again. Once they had left and I had a mere 6 minutes to get out of the door. For some reason, my sleepy brain thought it would be okay to just use the water from the tap for my tea this morning. Since I don’t live in a place that has good tap water, It made my first brew taste like garbage. I could hardly taste the tea over the metallic and chlorine taste. Granted, I’m the kind of person who won’t even use tap water to boil pasta. When the time came, I managed to brew a decent cup. I really like the combination of vanilla and coconut to compliment the black tea in this blend. It felt like a much thicker, creamy coconut element than the previous blends with coconut in them in the countdown. When brewed up properly, I could finally enjoy the richness of the coconut and even get a good velvety vanilla mid note. I am happily surprised at how sweet this blend is. The black tea even gives it the buttery and flaky crust aspect. A very vivid tea when the flavors have been extracted with good water, which if today is any kind of reminder, it would be that 99% of tea is good old H2O.

I’m sorry that you had the issues you had this morning – but I’m glad that you finally did get a decent cuppa from this tea as I quite like this one!

On the 9th Day of Christmas – I’m not surprised that this tea was voted in as one of the teas for this box but I certainly was happy! Coconut Cream Pie was one of my favorites from Frank’s era and I was happy to be able to have it in my pantry again – if only for a little while!

I did stray a little bit from the original recipe because, first, I use different black teas. Second, I decided that the blend needed vanilla beans in it because – why not? I mean, really? What isn’t better with a little vanilla? I also added some calendula petals for some visual interest.

This is so yummy! Rich and sweet and coconut-y! The black tea base is strong (it would make a great breakfast tea and who wouldn’t want some coconut cream pie for breakfast?)

Nattie

I’m so happy you’re changing the black tea! I always really liked this tea but thought the base held it back. It’s going to be a while before I let myself place any orders but 52teas is going to be the first when I do.

52Teas

When I took over, I was not very satisfied with the quality of teas from Frank’s primary supplier so I spent a few months sampling teas from other suppliers to find better teas (oh, what a trial it was to sample all those teas! Ha!) and I continue to try other teas/brands to find the best products to utilize in my blends that I can.

Nattie

Oh what a hard life it must be! ;) I salute your hard work and dedication (seriously).

Although I see nice big pieces of coconut in the dry leaf, I’m not getting anything that even remotely tastes like coconut from the brewed tea. Actually, it tastes like some kind of muddled fruity flavor! I’m guessing this is a result of contamination in the box, so withholding rating.

Sipdown (118)!

It’s been two days since I had a drop of tea. I’m still painfully sick. So much so I called in sick yesterday, and today I’ve spent all day in bed. Instead of sipping down the beverage that I love I’ve been drinking Neo Citron. Lots and lots of Neo Citron. So, all of these tasting notes are backlogged: I wanted to work on them yesterday but honestly I was just too tired.

This one comes from TeaNTees and I’m assuming it’s from the old 52Teas company given what the packaging looks like. I’ve yet to order from the new 52Teas so I don’t know what the packaging looks like but I imagine it’s different from how Frank packaged things. That means this tea is fairly(ish) old, and since it has coconut in it that does raise a bit of a red flag – I’m wondering if that coconut has turned? However the dry smell seemed safe so I went ahead and cold brewed this.

I think I managed to drink this right on the cusp of it turning as there was a slightly soapy note that crept into some sips but mostly this was a very smooth, creamy, and sweet. The black tea flavour overall was quite light, with emphasis on the added vanilla, cream, and coconut flavours. I think this tea very well conveyed what it was attempting to!

Thank you TeaNTees for passing it along!

Oh no! I’m glad you’re slowly on the mend.

It’s all good – I’ve slowly been drinking cups of tea all day today.

This one is at work with me at the moment, and as one of few black teas I have in my desk, I’m working through it fairly steadily. I’m still not massively taken with it. It’s quite finicky – sometimes I get a pretty decent cup with strong coconut cream notes (albeit mostly in the aftertaste), and sometimes I get a cup of plain black tea. It’s tricky to get right, and I’ve never yet got pie.

Today’s cup starts off as a plain black, but there’s some pretty good coconut right at the end of the sip. It’s not especially creamy today, even with added full-fat milk. I appreciate that this is a reblend, and that they weren’t always so good, but I have to admit that I’m a little disappointed with this one. Coconut, yes. No cream, and no pie. Sad face.

Monthly TTB Club.

This is pretty good. It’s creamy with a definite coconut flavor. I do think the coconut could stand to be a bit stronger, and it’s just a touch artificial, but overall a very pleasant tea. The base is pretty unobtrusive, and not at all bitter, but doesn’t seem to add much to the blend.

Sipdown number 28 of 330 on this sample from Janelle.

As a lover of coconut teas, this disappointed me. I seem to be bucking the trend, here. I was setting myself up for disappointment from the beginning, as to me coconut and vanilla flavours aren’t a good enough representation of ‘coconut cream pie’, and personally I would have tried harder to replacate the pie flavour – maybe with some kind of butter or pastry type flavouring. The black base wasn’t strong enough for me, though that’s just personal preference. The coconut note was somewhat creamy, but very faint. For some odd reason, I actually get a stronger – and actually pretty authentic – banana flavour from this. If it was a banana tea, I think I’d be pretty impressed! As it is I’m mainly confused. I don’t even remember drinking this the first time around, so I don’t know whether the sample has been contaminated. That probably means it wasn’t too memorable the first time around, either, though. Still, I’m happy to be able to say I’ve tried it, and happy to have another sipdown.

I bought two packs of this tea because I am on the hunt for the perfect coconut tea and the reviews here were so great that I figured I’d like it and need at least two.
So.. this tea is nice, but it isnt great. The directions did say 3-5 minutes and I steeped this for 5 minutes so I guess on the end of that guideline but this tea tasted a little bitter and the coconut wasn’t the first flavour I tasted. I had to add sugar for that taste to go away and once i added a bit of half and half it actually started to have the coconut cream pie flavour. So it wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the coconut tea I’ve been looking for.

This tea is not good bitter. But then again what tea is good bitter? Pay attention to your steep times. On my second steep I timed about 2 mins and 30 seconds. The dry leaves smell of goodness. Sweet and delectable. Just like the taste of the steeped tea. Hints of cream. Good base, though I can’t quite pin point what type of black tea. Lastly the coconut. Love the huge pieces. I took out a few and added them to the liquid once the tea was done steeping. It’s a smooth flavor.
