From 52teas

It seems that maybe spring is finally actually here, which always puts me in mind of e.e. cummings’ “In Just-” and William Carlos Williams’ “This is Just to Say” and maybe just poetry in general and also of fruity refreshing iced teas. So be prepared, I have a few of those for you this month.

As for this blend, well, despite the silly name, it’s a refreshing blast of tropical fruits and sweet green tea. Chun Mee reportedly means “Precious Eyebrows” and is so named because of the shape of the leaves, hence our “Tropical Eyebrows” name.

I’m not sure if persimmon qualifies as a tropical fruit, but I felt the need to include it here, so I did along with mango, banana, kiwi, pineapple and coconut. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.

Again, a tea from my recent swap with Courtney! Thanks!

This tea sounds pretty promising, but I’m not terribly familiar with the Chun Mee base… something makes me think it’s a bit smoky, which would be a bit weird, but I guess I’ll find out.

The tea smells pretty fruity (tropical fruit combo, like banana/pineapple), and once lukewarm, tastes fairly fruity as well. The green tea is a bit smoky, as opposed to vegetal… it’s a bit different to get used to, but I’m finding that the more I drink, the more I’m appreciating it as “not sencha”, and something different and tasty. The aftertaste is great, too.

I’m actually pretty impressed with this tea, and hopefully will also try it iced shortly (I don’t think I’ll try a cold-brew… greens always end up too astringent for me when I try that). It seems like it would make a perfect, fruity iced tea!

I must admit, this one sat in my cupboard unopened for a bit. I think it’s the word eyebrows. I guarantee that if you say the word eyebrows to me I would never think “hmmm…I need to drink that”. I might think of tweezers or Bert from Sesame Street, but not tea. Well, that is until now…

This must be my first Chun Mee. I heated the water to a sippable (not boiling) temperature and poured a cup as my morning “get ready tea”. I found it to be fruity with a smoky taste that’s obvious but not overwhelming. I liked it but I’d say it would be an occasional morning tea, not something that I’ll have to stop myself from grabbing on a daily basis. I poured the remainder from my teapot into my travel mug and sipped on it until I got to the house, leaving most of the tea in the travel mug until my Dad and I finished about 4 hours of yard work. By the time I got back to the tea, it was cold. Mmmmm…fruity and light, with the smokiness faded into the background, but just present enough to offer a bit of extra dimension to the sip. I feel like the rating will go up with this one the more I drink it. Such a unique taste! Besides, I’m going to enjoy telling people that I’m drinking Tropical Fruit Flavored Precious Eyebrows – that outta get me a bit of extra space on transit.

I didn’t realize that this was a bit smoky until reading this! Tropical fruit and smokiness sounds like a really interesting combo

canadianadia

I was surprised by the smokiness when I first sipped this. It’s quite nicely balanced and unique.

I finally got around to planting my garden today. It’s a nice and hot day so i wanted a fruity tea to make into an iced tea for sipping while digging. I don’t ever buy fruity teas so I dove into my swap pile and pulled this one out from KallieBoo!. Sounded perfect. I brewed it up extra strong and then poured it over some ice.

It’s really good. I’m terrible at naming fruit flavors. Especially tropical ones. So all i can say is that it tastes like tropical fruits and a really interesting green tea. I read a previous review noting its smokiness and it does have a smokiness to it, but not a ‘smoked’ (i.e. smoky meat) flavor per se. This might sound strange but it kind of tastes like what I can imagine licking an ash tray might taste like, but in a good way. I don’t know how else to describe it. It’s not strong. Just a hint of it in the aftertaste. I can totally see adding this to my cart next time I see another 52teas tea that sounds interesting. Thanks KallieBoo!!

Tropical Eyebrows – 52teas – 2/10/2014

Well it certainly smells tropical. The smell from the steeping cup is definitely fruity, though when I put my nose closer to the cup I can pick up a faint green tea scent.

This is actually pretty good. I’m not drinking it very hot because I have trouble doing that. The green is quite grassy and the fruit is very generically tropical though I couldn’t say anything more than that. I am getting a faint flavour in the background that seriously reminds me of hotdogs though I’m sure there aren’t any hotdog-like ingredients in here. It really gets strong in the aftertaste.

I can’t say I ever want to drink this again, but I’m glad I tried it.

I’ve finally managed to think through the fog in my head to get some actual work done. (Not entirely fair, I had a lot of work conversations this morning but they were not useful towards meeting this deadline).

I kept reading ‘hedgehogs’ instead of ‘hotdogs’ and I think I really need to get some sleep.

Backlog:

Another tropical tea. That’s usually my reaction when I encounter a “tropical” flavored tea. It’s not all that exciting, it seems like something every purveyor of flavored tea offers.

But this Tropical flavored tea is quite enjoyable … I love the addition of the persimmon! Now, I’m … not one who … eats a whole heck of a lot of persimmon. I usually walk right past them in the produce section of my local store in favor of more common fruits like apples and oranges. (Speaking of apples … I’m overjoyed that honeycrisp apples are back!)

So I can’t actually say unequivocally that it is the persimmon that makes this tea different. It could be the Chun Mee tea. But this tropical tea is deliciously different and I like it! Yum!

1 tbsp for 318 ml

Brewed tea has a smoky-burnt aroma with hints of tropical fruitiness.

Fruit flavours are well-balanced with each other and compliment the green tea base well. The green tea flavour is lighter than expected. The burnt flavour is present at the back of the throat.

The aroma of the dry leaf is awesome! I cold brewed this in my mug on the way to work. The flavor is amazing. It’s fruity and juicy. It’s also nice and smooth. The flavors mesh well together. So happy I took this today.

Meh. This tea is just …..meh. Might be an interesting iced tea, but if this made into the permanent collection or as a comeback, I would not go out of my way to grab it. I did find myself wishing that it had a small shot of coconut flavor, also wishing that I had some coconut syrup or milk around the house but I would probably over do it. I think I’m going to put a few ice cubes with it, if it’s more drinkable then….I’ll finish. Otherwise…down the drain it goes….yeah not liking it that badly. Not even inspired enough to see about adjusting the temp and steep time, though I might at a later time. I’m disappointed with Greens in general. I’ve yet to find a green that I really love. A few that I have a mild like for, you know like “it’s something to drink that has a mildly pleasant taste.” I think I’ve liked Whites a little more, though not by much. Discovered 1 or 2 Oolongs that I like, plenty of Black teas that I like, as well as Herbals/Rooibos. Puerh, have to admit….that one is still kind of intimidating me. I’ve tried a few, but not enough

Discovery Tea box – Tea #12
I believe this is another older 52Teas blend? Many older 52Teas blends in the teabox somehow. haha. This wasn’t bad but I shouldn’t really be judging older teas too much. A tropical green blend. I had it a few days ago, so it isn’t shiningly clear in my mind. None of the fruit flavors were very distinct, but at least the coconut wasn’t bad yet? I really don’t think older teas should be included in teaboxes, as they do have to be mailed around multiple times… I actually bought some new teas just for including in the teabox.

VariaTEA

Whatever coconut is used by 52 Teas is awesome. I find it holds up quite well overtime. I have had teas where the coconut went rancid and its disgusting but thankfully these blends don’t seem to have that issue.

Also, I don’t mind older teas in a teabox so long as they are holding up. Some blends can taste almost as good as new even years after they are made and it gives people a chance to try something they might otherwise not have gotten the chance to try. Though if the flavor is extremely deteriorated, it probably shouldn’t be included, unless someone specifically requests it.

tea-sipper

Yup to all of that. :D

evol-ving

Yup to all that too. However, IMHO, teas added to a teabox or in a swap should be under two years old as a rule (unless permission from swap partner or teabox group indicates that people are cool with older teas of certain brands). Either way, this info should all be upfront so that people feel that the exchanges are fair.

This is a really nice light tea if you stick to a 1-2 minute steep. I get some great tannincs and fruity notes (papaya, pineapple, passion fruit). This will make a killer iced tea.
