E is for… Echinacea Shield!

This tea smells really deliciously fruity, but today it doesn’t really taste so fruity. Maybe I overleafed? It’s a bit bitter, and I can taste some sort of herbal ingredient, not sure what it is exactly. I think I’d rather sit here smelling it than drinking it, truthfully.

E is for… Earl Grey Cider!

Although not creamy, I’m a fan of this one! It’s actually a really great blend of earl grey and apple, which makes it very unique and quite tasty. The bergamot is on the subtle side, which I think it needs to be in order to be able to showcase the lighter flavour of apple. The only aspect I’m not too fond of here is that the apple has somewhat of a floral aftertaste, which I could do without.

What an interesting flavor combination!

Kittenna

Definitely!

Now that’s an EG I think I could groove with!

2022 Sipdown 76/365!

Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge March 2022: Tea from a woman-owned company

E is for… Eggnog Marshmallow Treat!

Well… this prompt wasn’t exactly hard, especially since I’m going through my 52teas stash, and have a nice stash of Butiki, Dessert by Deb, and A Quarter to Tea as well! (I imagine that I have teas by other woman-owned companies as well, these four are just the most obvious).

This is another kind-of-cheating sipdown, where I still have another packet of this, although this particular one is actually from the Amoda sub box from Christmas 2019. This is another tea where I never really got much eggnog flavour – it mostly tastes like standard marshmallow treat genmaicha. Which isn’t bad, but is not eggnog.

drank Eggnog Mate by 52teas

E is for… Eggnog Mate!

Tis the day of Eggnog and Earl Grey. Haha. Those are definitely the most popular “E” teas amongst my collections, although there are a few Elderflower, English, Echinacea, etc.

Unfortunately, this tea is not really eggnog to me, at all. The mate base is quite strong and overwhelming, and it’s really all I taste – no spicing or cream. I did note previously that perhaps I overleafed, but I just don’t think those eggnoggy flavours are there. I’m not too keen on mate, unless it’s roasted, so not too fond of this tea, although I certainly prefer it to some herbal blends.

drank Earl Grey Matcha by DAVIDsTEA

2022 Sipdown 75/365!

Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge March 2022: Green tea

E is for… Earl Grey Matcha!

When the DT matcha advent calendars went on sale for half price, it was a sign that I needed to buy one. (Well, two… it was such a great deal… haha.) The downside is that my cupboard got a bunch bigger, but the upside is that I get to sample a handful of matcha flavours that I didn’t want to purchase 50g of – like this one! Although in retrospect, not purchasing this one feels silly, as it’s very much like Cream of Earl Grey matcha, except when latteed I think the EG flavour is stronger. Which is what I want, so I probably have been purchasing the wrong one all along. I should try the Cream EG without milk for curiousity purposes, and then probably buy this one in the future.

I can actually smell the bergamot in this matcha, although it still has a very squashy vibe to me for whatever reason.

I finished my 50g bag of this last week, and I definitely miss it!

drank Mango Sunrise by DAVIDsTEA

(DavidsTea 2022: 72)

Slight derailment from the alphabet; I brewed this (new-to-me) tea up without thinking, and didn’t want it sitting in the fridge for another week or so until I hit “M”! As is, I let it infuse for at least 2 days.

It’s fairly sweet, with a nice ripe mango flavour but a bit of a chemical aftertaste. It contains black tea but I can’t really tell – it mostly tastes like a fruit tea. It will be tasty enough for a summer option but probably not a tea I’d purchase again.

drank Eggnog Matcha by DAVIDsTEA

2022 Sipdown 74/365!

E is for… Eggnog Matcha!

Drank this both on “D” day and today, which did not end up being “E” day after all as I just didn’t have the time to make tea today (and bonus, I have a (small but painful) canker sore on the tip of my tongue somehow, and it seriously diminishes my desire to drink/eat/speak).

I definitely enjoy this more when just thinking of it as a bit of a spiced custard tea. The spicing just does not scream eggnog to me, but the custardy flavour is good.

(DavidsTea 2022: 71)

D is for… Dulce & Banana!

The only other “D” tea I managed to pull out (I don’t have very many to begin with). It was a nice evening cup – I really can’t believe that the coconut hasn’t gone off yet, but it hasn’t. I feel like this would be a tea that 52teas could take on and successfully recreate, as the next chamomile blend?! (I don’t think Anne will see this though.)

D is for… Dirigible Plum Pudding!

Got a little derailed from my alphabet challenge due to children and other life circumstances; going to get back on track with “E” tomorrow which will leave me exactly enough days in the month to make it to Z! Haha.

I really like this tea. Again, there’s a really great base with nice flavour, and then some vague flavouring notes on top – I really taste nothing in the way of what I’d think of as plum pudding, but I like it anyways. It does still remind me of Butiki’s plum teas, although “plum” was never a flavour I got from any of them.

drank Curuba Green Tea by 52teas

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 151)

C is for… Curuba!

Another tea that I write off/pass over when looking for something to drink, thinking it’s something generic. It’s not; it’s banana and passionfruit and they taste real and delicious. My cup today is heavier on creamy, real banana, and I’m really enjoying those flavours today. The banana is heavily reminding me of DT’s Banana Oolong (that I recently posted about), and it’s giving me all the nostalgia, plus tasting yummy.

Profile

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
