drank Earl Grey Cupcake by 52teas

(52teas (Anne) 2022: 298)

In the home stretch of sampling all my 52teas, and I’m at the point of getting to open some new packages of ones I’ve previously finished off! Including this delicious gem. This is pretty much just a vanilla earl grey, but it’s really smooth and light with maybe a hint of cakiness. Really good.

Delicious, though I wish it was maybe a bit more robust and less sweetened.

2022 Sipdown 147/365!

Finished this off iced, and made sure not to leave the tea brewing too long. I believe I enjoyed it much more than I had the first time I tried it, although still not one I’d pick up again. I’m not sure why I previously suggested there was blackberry leaf… it doesn’t appear to be in this tea. In fact, I don’t think this tea was particularly sweet at all? Just nicely tart. Bumped rating from 64 to 73.

Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge April 2022: “Health” tea

I understand this was intended to be a “detox” tea? I don’t know that aloe is used in many drinks, generally. I feel like it doesn’t have a great deal of flavour.

Brewed up the last of this into a large jug of iced tea. I recall not minding it, but it was kind of floral, and that bothered my husband. Wouldn’t refuse it if offered, but probably wouldn’t buy again except by accident (because it sounds appealing, haha).

drank Strawberry Bloom by DAVIDsTEA

2022 Sipdown 145/365!
Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge July 2022: Tea from a Canadian company

Found these lovely little tea blooms that I believe were courtesy of VariaTEA some significant number of years ago. I think I have three flavours; somehow this ended up at the top of the pile. It’s a black tea bloom, which is different that most I’ve had.

Aroma was lightly strawberry, and flavour ended up being pretty true – a mild black tea with gentle candy strawberry. It’s fairly simple, but I did enjoy it. The bloom was also pretty, although I admit that I steep the blooms in an infuser, which kind of changes the experience, because they inevitably have little pieces that fall off and annoy me if they’re left in the cup. I do think that this might be an interesting one to have tried… grandpa-style? (Is that where you leave the leaves in the cup and just add water over time as you drink it?)

2022 Sipdown 144/365!
Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge July 2022: Tea paired with a biscuit/cookie

Ok, didn’t pair this with a biscuit/cookie, but I think a scone counts? It was the perfect pairing – I love a smooth, malty, robust Chinese black paired with pastries. It cuts the sweetness somehow and both just taste more delicious.

Ancient tea, it wasn’t horrible at this point but the flavour had gone downhill.

drank Pineapple Bacon Rooibos by 52teas

2022 Sipdown 142/365!
Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge July 2022: Pineapple tea

Well, if nothing else… I’m consistent. Did not remember my previous attempt at this tea, but it was truly awful, and I had one sip and poured it out. Same as last time, according to my note. It was some gross sour combination of disgusting. Flavours I’d expect from rancid coconut and hibiscus, not a pineapple bacon rooibos. Buh-bye, gross tea.

*Also note, this is for the original Frank version. I don’t believe I ever tried Anne’s reblend.

For some reason I don’t think fondly of this tea despite it being one of my favourite tea flavours – lime. Needed something different, grabbed it, and it was pretty satisfying, although I could do without the rooibos. (I could always do without the rooibos.) It does say it’s green rooibos though, which is perhaps the reason it didn’t overly bother me.

It’s not a fluffy lime flavour like the variants of lime marshmallow that I love, but more of a pure flavour, and interesting with the black base.

2022 Sipdown 141/365!
Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge July 2022: Tea that you’ve forgotten about

Definitely not a tea I remembered owning, but it had the perfect amount for a sipdown! Had a bit of nostalgia for Della Terra when drinking this, as it just had some flavour in it that reminded me of other teas from them (of which I still have a decent amount). It was pretty tasty, too – a nicely balanced chai/chocolate combo, with a bit of a twist from the puerh base.

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
