2022 Sipdown 140/365!

This was a delightful lapsang souchong, full of body and sweetness and not just all smoke, nor harsh. I drank it without additions, and quite enjoyed a few infusions.

2022 Sipdown 139/365!
Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge June 2022: Tea from a place you’d like to visit

Although not tops on my to-visit list, I would like to get to Europe and go through France and other countries on a food tour. One day, maybe when I’m old and rich enough (hah) to pay for a guided tour where I don’t have to put in too much effort. Haha.

Finished this off; wasn’t the best final cup but I did enjoy the base tea blend.

Almost didn’t try this one, but figured I’d have one cup before sending it off to my mom. Glad I did, because it’s better than I remember. Creamy, spearminty, actually quite pleasant and delicious, especially considering my general dislike of mint.

ETA: Got a cheesecake vibe in the resteep. Yum!!

Review for the Anne reblend (obviously). It tasted as expected (good); I feel like I may have caught some lovely green tea notes with the coconut and pineapple as well.

2022 Sipdown 138/365!
Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge April 2022: Tea that includes a colour in its name

Super sad sipdown! Toasted coconut kukicha and whatever else Anne put in the flavouring made this just delicious. I remember, hilariously, thinking that I needed to purchase this tea because it had “tea” in the name, and then realizing that this was not two hobbies of mine intersecting, but just… tea with tea. Not sure that made sense, but it will amuse me if I read this later.

Another one that needs a reblend! Wink wink, nudge nudge :D

drank Raspberry Fluff Mate by 52teas

Too much mate, not enough raspberry. I feel like I enjoyed the second infusion more than the first, though, so perhaps I also have an overleafing problem? Have I said this about Anne’s mate blends before?

Review for the 2020 reblend, the fateful version which tastes unpleasantly earthy, and which I should maybe just throw out. Although it did just occur to me to try removing the marshmallow root next time, in case that’s the culprit?

Note: the original and most recent reblend I have of this tea taste infinitely better. It’s just this one that’s wonky. (Also, I read my past notes and this distinction has been made abundantly clear in all of them. Hahahahahaha.)

This blend contains sunflower seeds (that are not rancid) so it’s in my sip-down-quickly box, and I needed something caffeine-free. Not my favourite tea, but it’s a decent, mildly-spiced option when one needs to reduce caffeine intake. I feel like it leaned in a cardamom direction this time, which I always enjoy.

Writing this note and wishing I was actually drinking a cup of this calming blend while I listen to my 7-month-old squealing away in her crib instead of sleeping… up until yesterday, we had a pretty good track record of being able to put her in the crib with her soother and she would just fall asleep on her own, but she is currently sick and this method has been successful 0 times in the last 48 hours.

Enjoyed this cup on the evening I had it; this is, I believe, the third pouch of this that I have, and the one that’s the fullest. The flavour is dissipating a bit, so I feel like this might be a good reblend for sometime in 2023. Haha. Still light, creamy lavender, but less lemon and flavour overall than I remember.

Brewed hot and chilled. It was satisfying, and not astringent. Good mixed berry flavour; I drank it rather quickly as I was thirsty so couldn’t note any particular berries in the flavour profile.

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
