This is a nice vanilla black tea. The base tea has a good amount of maltiness which goes very well with the vanilla. I have other teas that fall into this category right now in my cupboard so I don’t need it now, but I will keep it in mind for in the future.

L&C TTB

I kept a sample of this to try from the TTB to try, and found a little piece of vanilla bean in it. I love it when that happens! This smells so yummy, vanilla and creamy.
Taste wise, its nice and vanilla-y and creamy. I don’t remember much else, I seemed to have drank it all without realizing it while doing my homework. It’s good, but doesnt replace my favorite vanilla teas. A good contender though.

I received this tea from the Marco Polo TTB, filled with lovely samples from a huge variety of tea companies. This is my first tea from Mahamosa Gourmet Teas. I happen to like rooibos teas especially in the evening when caffeine is a no-no. The rooibos taste is smoothly present without smacking you in the face. The caramel is smooth and creamy. It has a bit of an aftertaste but it isn’t unpleasant. I added a little sweetener but I have the feeling most people wouldn’t need it. Yummy!

Flavors: Caramel, Cream, Rooibos

How have I not put up a review of this yet?

The key between c & e is broken on my computer, so there’s gonna be some creative phrasing up in here.

I’m having this tea partly to help me stay awake & partly as a comfort. My anxiety has been piquing a bit since I have a relatively minor situation that has been stressing me out because it sets off my guilt complex along with some other fears. I’m just trying to tell myself that it’s not necessary for me to react with stress & fear, even though that’s my normal habit.

ANYWHO. I really, really like this tea. It’s just so smooth. It’s ever so slightly astringent in the way that breakfast teas normally are, & the smokiness is artfully warm, not brash. Even just sniffing the aroma is a comfort. Nice aftertaste, too. It seems like a great first-thing-in-the-morning tea when it’s freezing & snowy out. Calmly assertive.

I hope your keyboard gets fixed soon. Gotta be tough finding ways around using the letter D.

I think this would make an awesome writing exercise. Pick a letter to be off limits and phrase everything around it? Ha ha! My daughter is going to enjoy this when school starts back…

This sample came from Nicole (sorry it takes me so long to get through your packages – you send me so much! :P). I have no idea what a jackfruit is, or what it would taste like… This tea is a mixture of rather large and straight green teas leaves and little stubby black tea leaves. There are sizable pieces of orange peel along with some fruit chunks and flower petals. The dry scent is… odd. It’s quite sour and reminds me of pickle brine with a fruity edge. That kind of worried me, heh! I went for a 5 minute steep (recommended is 4-5).

Oh thank goodness, the brewed tea doesn’t smell sour or pickly at all! Just very fruity (similar to mango) with some vanilla and little bit of green tea. Wow, this is delicious! :D It has a lovely creamy fruit flavor, like a mango smoothie. The vanilla is a lovely addition. The green tea base tastes a little bit like autumn leaves in the background. Near the end, I get a flavor that I originally thought tasted a bit like banana taffy, but after reading the description, it’s definitely almond extract. Really lovely!

Overall, this tea reminds me of a mango smoothie with vanilla almond milk. Yummy!

I’ve never had a jackfruit either. :) But I like this tea.

Cameron B.

Seems quite similar to mango to me, if this tea is accurate. And I love mango! :D

This sample came from Nicole. Visually, it looks like a generic semi-tippy Yunnan, though the leaves are a bit more broken than I would like. The leaves are mostly dark, maybe with 30% golden tips. Dry, it smells pretty sweet and malty. I did my usual 3 minute brew.

The brewed aroma is earthy with malt or dark bread notes, raisins, and honey. The taste is quite similar. There’s a definitely earthy quality, but I don’t get mineral or smoke with it. Definitely a lot of malt here, but I wouldn’t describe it as bread. I also get a dark dried fruit flavor, which makes me think of raisins combined with the richness of molasses. There’s isn’t a ton of sweetness, however. There’s just a little hint of an herbaceous spice note that I’ve found in several other dark Yunnan and Fujian teas. I would describe this as being between the “dark” Yunnans (earth/mineral/smoke) and the “middling” Yunnans (mostly bread/honey/dried fruit). This tea is okay, but not something that I would purchase. I tend to love the middling to light (pastry/honey/stonefruit) Yunnans the most though. :)

Flavors: Earth, Herbaceous, Malt, Molasses, Raisins

I love a good lavender earl grey. I grabbed this one out of my earl grey stash today and although I love lavender this might have over done it a bit for me. It’s very heavy on the lavender. So much that it has a bit of a lavender bathroom smell to it. I can taste the earl grey in the after taste but otherwise it’s overtaken.

Not too much tea drinking today as I slept in super late and then got called to cover someone else’s shift at work but at least there is some time for a couple cups before bed. Sipping on this now, it is pleasant enough but not really something I will miss when I pass the rest of the sample on to Cavocorax. The strawberry is subtle but adds a nice sweetness to the cup while the green tea in the base helps lighten up the black tea. Thank you Sil for the chance to try this as it is definitely something that would have caught my eye and now I know it’s not something I would need to stock.

:D those are the best kind of teas…. teas you can cross OFF your list lol

Card and Tea Travelling Tea Box

This one is from earlier in the day and i have to say, that as i haven’t tried a lot of Mahamosa teas (yet) i was looking forward to giving this one a shot. Turns out, this one wasn’t too bad. There’s a nice fruity taste to this one, though to be fair i don’t recall just how strawberry like it was heh. I just know that it was a pleasant cup while i had a VERY productive day working from home!

Yay for being productive and trying new things!

Had another cup of this for breakfast this morning, thanks to the generous sample from the TTB.

I accidentally forgot to fill my kettle up with enough water for a cup, so I had to let it sit after I poured it, while I waited for more water to boil.

It got really dark and bold. I added milk , or maybe it was a splash of cream…I forget. Anyway it was good and rich and thick and creamy.
Glad I have a bit left!

Nicole

I love this one with cream. :)

i’ll have to look at it sometime…sounds nice

T&C TTB Tea # 21 Backlog May 29

Here’s what my log book says for this tea:

“I remember nothing about this. Decent, simple black. KEEP.”

So, there you have it.

I loved this TTB experience because I was able to try so many teas. I was worried at first about having enough to put in to replace all that I wanted to try, but then I looked at my jam packed tea cupboards and laughed at myself for ever thinking that. And that box was so full of tea, there were tons I didn’t even touch!

First things first: it’s me, formerly known as TeaKlutz! I’ve changed my name and image in the hopes of being able to better connect this to my blog, Steep Inclined! http://steepinclined.wordpress.com/
(Gotta say, I do kinda miss my old profile pic… ah well.)

Sipdown!

So I poured the last of my leaves into the infuser, expecting there to be, oh, about a teaspoon. Out come like two and a half teaspoons of tea. Oh well, I think. Just steep it for three minutes and maybe it’ll be alright.

Oh no. Oh no. Oh lord did I screw this up. Bitter. Maybe if it cools – egh. Nope. Bitter bitter bitter.

Sad sipdown. I really liked this tea, I wish I had given it a more carefully prepared sendoff. :C

Oh well. More room for new teas!

Morning tea for the day, as I peruse YouTube and try to figure out the bass line of a song by one of my favorite bands, a Japanese group by the name of Luna Sea. And, of course, finding that I got said bass line wrong. _

I don’t think I’ve reviewed this tea on here yet, but I’ve come to quite like it. It reminds me of a bailin gongfu tea or something. Brisk and misty. There’s a woodsy quality in the back of the mouth too, almost like fresh mulch. Because it’s Nepalese, I think I automatically think “mountains” every time I drink it. I think I got it a sliver on the bitter side this morning, but no worry. That could also be just some natural astringency.

EDIT: So of course when I post this, up pops my WAY more detailed review from a month ago! Ha.

I went on a small Mahamosa spree recently (I LOVE their EG Cream), and I decided to try some teas of nationalities with which I was not familiar. I got a Russian tea, a Kenyan tea, and this Nepalese tea.

I prepared this in the gaiwan tonight. I started reading a guidebook-type thing to tea yesterday, and it makes me want to be more precise and refined with my tea brewing.

So of course I completely did not measure the amount of time on the first steep at all. It’s somewhere between 30-45 s.

The dry leaves are mostly small and dark brown-black with some lighter flecks. There are longer leaves among the short ones. Wet leaves lighten in color, and have a fairly full-bodied wood/mud aroma. Liquor is on the lighter side of amber.

The word that comes to mind when tasting it is “mulch.” I’m not sure why. It’s almost a woodsy flavor, but it’s just on this side of earthy-astringent. It’s actually fairly brisk.

The flavor grows another angle on the second steep. It’s a flavor whose angle goes “down,” goes deeper. It’s a flavor that I’d normally find kind of weird in other things, but here it’s just part of the experience. It’s hard to describe, but I keep wanting to say mud? There’s something almost mossy about it. An edge of something resembling sweetness.

On the third steep, the highs and lows of the tea have evened out, but the woodsiness is more defined. Now I really imagine gnawing on mulch, or even wood products. It’s a pleasantly rounded flavor.

Had I not taken the time to do the very involved tasting with this – complete with gaiwan and slurps – I would have probably drank it and thought, “Eh, that’s alright.” Honestly, it doesn’t jump out and grab me, but I find it enjoyable, especially during this third sip in which the woodsiness comes out.

As much as I like the cinnamon chai from Upton Tea, this Fennel Chai is the most interesting smelling and tasting chai I think I’ve ever had. Really interesting aroma that features a deep almost earthy aroma, nice rounded flavor; I steeped mine with boiling water for five minutes and there was no bitter aftertaste. (Added vanilla creamer – delicious.)

According to my handy e-mail draft list, this is the last tea that Nicole sent me I have yet to write a tasting note for. Thank you once again for that lovely package of teas you sent a while back!

Steep #1 //12 mins after boiling (unintentionally) // 3 min
The leaves smell like an intoxicating Earl. The lavender is actually green rather than, uh, lavender. But the lavender is certainly potent – very good. The lavender surprisingly overpowers the bergamot, though I can’t really smell the lavender when the blend is dry. The base is perfect for the bergamot & lavender. If you like bergamot and lavender (and neither brings soap to mind for you) then this one is for you! I will enjoy this but I think I can never get enough Earl Grey Cream in my life.

Steep #2 // just boiled // 4 min
This steep didn’t have as much magic. The lavender and what bergamot was gone. I think I should have steeped it the way I did last cup. I’ll try again the next time, but I know if I steep it right I can get at least three nice steeps from exceptional EGs like SpecialTeas. This one isn’t my favorite. The Steepster rating is for the first cup but it would be lower if you averaged the second steep in.

It doesn’t count as breaking my “no tea purchase for awhile” resolve if I order for someone else. My mom asked me to order some of the Jackfruit for a friend of hers and this was one of the samples they included.

This was nice and fruity. The description doesn’t mention strawberry specifically but it sure does smell like strawberry! Nicely fruity and lightly sweet. This was a nice tea to have tried. I wouldn’t keep it on hand myself but it would probably make a nice iced summer tea.

And by the way, if you are looking for companies with great customer service the folks at Mahamosa are just super. I completely spaced putting the discount code in at checkout and emailed them about it. They added it on to my order without any issues.

This tea was a very pleasant discovery. When dry, the bergamot is fairly pronounced. In the brewed tea, it becomes somewhat milder. The rose is only a tiny facet here, and the bergamot adds a bright note. The vanilla is subtle. It manages to be refreshing and soothing at the same time, and the flavors are well balanced.

Been a while since I had this but I random number generated (kinda, I asked a friend for a number) and this came up so I made some. Still tasty even though it’s quite old at this point. I don’t like a lot of rooibos teas but this one just hits the spot.

Okay, now I know I had more than one review written for this tea, so Steepster has eaten at least one of my reviews. Sad face.

Was looking for a tea that could stand up to a bit of abuse when I made it this morning and this tea won because it has a clear top and I could see it, mostly.

Added some milk this time around, as well as sweetener, though I usually don’t add milk to rooibos teas. One of the other reviewers said it made the tea taste more like pumpkin and less honeydew, which is a good thing in my book.

Smells quite delicious and a bit spicier than I expected, since it has so few spices in it. Perhaps it’s just me today. I did just consume some Snapea Crisps (basically dehydrated peas in their pods, caesar flavoured), so my mouth is expecting the same type of flavour still. They are tasty and a terrible idea for me to pick up because the bag has almost 4 servings in it and I have no idea how I’m going to stop myself from eating the whole thing. I feel like I’ve been eating all day already.

Still quite nice to drink. Can taste the rooibos mostly in the undertone and aftertaste. Up front, it is sweet and a bit melony and the nettles are interesting. Good tea.

I love snapea crips! And yeah, I usually eat the whole bag. #whoops

Starfevre

I took 2 days at least. there’s 2.5 servings in the bag so that’s not too bad, right? Marvel at my self-control!

What is this? A seasonal tea that I don’t actually hate? Will wonders never cease?

Really, this doesn’t come across as pumpkin to me at all but it’s named seasonally so it counts! The ingredients confuse me and I was a little hesitant because of the rooibos and melon but I went looking for a holiday tea without ginger or cinnamon or cloves and such and Mahamosa certainly delivered.

I brewed up basically my whole sample in the Breville and only after I poured it into my cup did I realize I had no milk. So first cup, no milk, just sugar. Tastes super sweet (which I like). Sweeter than a tea ordinarily would with the amount of sugar that I added. I think it is the melon. And it is super surprising that I even like the melon because I ordinarily don’t like any kind of melon at all, although I will tolerate watermelon. It doesn’t sit on my most-hated melon list though, that belongs to cantaloupe.

I don’t even like rooibos all that much and I can hardly taste it at all in here, it’s so far in the background of flavours. As I let my tongue still after the aftertaste has lingered a while I get sort of a rooibos-y feel but that’s it.

Now I need to get my fat ass off the couch and evict the adorable kitties out of my lap (15 year age difference and they are cuddling like no tomorrow) and go to the store because I’ve been away for a week and a half and the cat sitter cleaned my fridge and there is now nothing in it at all beyond some apple sauce and chocolate soy milk and maple syrup. Seriously, that’s all that I have. And some weird weird soda from I don’t know when. But anyway, yes milk.

And I keep hearing about tea soda being made so I’m going to buy some soda water too just to try it out because I am damn curious.

Tea obsession back into full swing. I missed ye.
