1040 Tasting Notes

I’m not sure what to think of this. It’s a little fruity, a little nutty, and a little floral – but it’s not any specific fruit, nut, flower. It just seems vague to me. I’m not sure what it’s really suppose to be – ingredients list black tea, rose petals, almonds, apples….
There is nothing offensive or wrong about this tea, but it just seems generic to me – not really special. It’s just ok.
I’m torn with this one…..
The genmaicha base (or blend) is just spectacular, amazing, phenomenal – it seems almost sacrilegious to add stuff to it. With nothing added this could easily be one of my fav genmaichas.
But – he did add stuff to it…..
Toasty, roasty, nutty everything a good genmaicha should be and then way in the back there is just this hint of cocoa. The sencha is there but without being grassy and intrusive. I think the hojicha is a smart addition, just adds more nuttiness to the genmaicha. I’m not really getting the caramel, but there is a sweetness here.
I really think this is a case where less is more. If this were overpowering chocolate, I would miss all the awesome notes in the tea. Perfect example of using a good quality base and then adding subtle flavors to it without loosing the awesomeness of the tea.
If you are looking for a heavily chocolate genmaicha – this isn’t it. But if you love good genmaicha – you should try this.
I’m happily drinking my 3rd cup of it – but still torn about spoiling a great genmaicha.
I’m a huge fan of coffee flavored teas – Davids Coffee Pu’erh is one of my secret guilty pleasure and I really really miss HI Moosetracks. When I saw this as an offering from Liquid Proust, had to try it.
MMMMmmmmmmmm awesome. This is everything it should be. Dark and rich. It has a really thick mouthfeel. The coffee is present without being overly bitter or beating you over the head. The black base adds some dark chocolate notes. The pu’erh is more subtle but it adds some really nice earthiness and depth. I was really worried about the grapefruit (I don’t normally do well with citrus in tea), and while I don’t really taste it as grapefruit, there is a light acidic note in the back that breaks up the heaviness of the black and pu’erh. I think it’s one of those things that I woudn’t have understood what it was (without being told) but would miss it if it was taken out of the blend.
For my tastes this is almost perfect – well balanced, flavors as they should be. This is one that just makes me happy. :)
Btw, have you ever tried Bayswater’s Chocolate Macchiato? That’s my favourite coffee-flavoured tea!
I have not tried the Bayswater one. I just went and read the tasting notes and it looks like something that could replace Moosetracks. On the wishlist it goes. Thanks for the suggestion. :))
Yeah, it has way more flavour than Moosetracks, IMO. :)

This is a nice vanilla tea, but it still just (and just by a hair) misses for me. I think it’s too oolong and not enough black tea. The vanilla is really nice, but the oolong is too strong and I feel that the mineral/roasted notes of the oolong doesn’t quite go with the vanilla. The black is just barely present. For my tastes I would prefer there to be more black and less oolong – I think the oolong belongs but it should be in the back ground adding interest and depth rather than being the star of the show. I didn’t get anything from the sandelwood. Others have said cocoa – I’m not getting that. Again I think if the black was more prominent there could be some natural chocolate notes from the black and that would be a nice addition.
Don’t get me wrong, I like this but it’s just not quite right.

Apple – yep
Cinnamon – yep
Hojicha – not really – pretty much obscured by the flavors
This is not quite what I was expecting. It’s apple cinnamon as advertised but it’s REALLY apple with just a bit of cinnamon (for my tastes this cinnamon is odd). I was expecting more of the roasted hojicha to be present with just hints of apple/cinnamon – toast with apple jelly maybe, something like that. This is hot apple juice with a hint of strange cinnamon.
This is coming out harsher than intended. Other than the cinnamon that bothers me (and that’s personal taste), this isn’t bad – just odd and not what I was expecting.
Hmm, too bad about the base not coming through. Hojicha + apple cinnamon is a smart idea, in theory.

I steeped it for 2:30. This was totally fun. :) It’s not about disappointment – it’s about trying new things. Every time I try a new blended/flavored tea there is a possibility that my tastes/vision and those of the blender/creator do not match. That doesn’t make either of us right or wrong, just different. I’m going to try and cold steep this – I’ve never cold steeped a hojicha before so that will be interesting. I might like it better as cold apple juice. Will see.
I really don’t know much about this other than the owner gave it to us and said it was special.
Not sure about special, but it is unusual. Sweet, earthy, peachy (apricot?), brassy. A little puerh ish, a little Indian blach, and some stone fruit. Would never have thought China Black if blind tasting this. Unusual, not bad, not my style…..
This was the other fall collection tea I bought today. Dry it really smells like muffins!!!
This is really good. I sometimes have issues with orange teas – they come across more as citrus acidic than orange. This is tart cranberry sweet orange some pastry/nut notes with just a hint of cinnamon. Well balanced, warm and soothing. This really works for me as a fall dessert tea. ;)

This sounds super interesting. Of course, now I just want to get a whole bunch of fall stuff (though I’m still put out by the lack of hedgehog teapots)
hedgehog teapots?
They have a colour-changing Nordic mug with a hedgehog design, but I really want a similar design on one of their bubble teapots. It seems like they’re really de-emphasizing those pots lately, though; the new fall collection doesn’t have any bubble teapot designs.
Was talking about this earlier today with a tea friend and they thought it sounded weird and wanted someone to try it first. OK I’ll volunteer….
Dry it smell just like a peanut butter cup, steeped it smells really yummy – chocolate and peanut butter.
Hmmmmm a little strange, this seems more like chocolate, peanut, and caramel. Hot turtles chocolates more than peanut butter cup. Its lacking the creamy peanut buttery thing, this is just peanut. I’m also struggling with the fact that it’s a tisane, for my tastes this needs a dark base – black, pu’erh, something – to add some depth. It feels thin on the tongue and that’s translating to watery for me.
I’m surprised that I don’t hate it. Its a decent dessert tea, but I think it could be better and doesn’t live up to it’s name.
Being from Ohio and someone who makes tea… I’ve been told so many times to make a Buckeye blend.
Peanut butter and tea just sounds like a terrible idea. How much of the apple pieces do you end up tasting in this versus the chocolate and peanut butter?
It doesn’t taste like peanut butter, not sure if that’s a good or a bad thing. Peanut butter tea seemed like an odd idea to me too. I didn’t taste the apple at all but it’s the first ingredient….? This us chocolate first then roasted peanut then caramel. At least that’s my impression. Good luck with your Buckeye blend.
