From DAVIDsTEA

Ready to roast

Green tea with roasted rice is a popular drink in Japan, but it’s unusual to see a blend with Hojicha, the roasted green tea. We’ll admit we were a little worried: roasted tea and roasted rice…had we gone too far? Is there such a thing as too much roasting? Thankfully our fears were unfounded: this tasty blend is just roasty enough. It’s sweet, nutty and perfectly balanced. We love it served hot, but for a real treat try it over ice – it’s totally refreshing and surprisingly addictive.

Ingredients: Organic: Hojicha green tea from China, roasted rice.

This one’s pretty decent! Thanks to Janelle for sending me some :)

The flavour was sweeter and a bit toastier than a regular genmaicha, and I think I may have liked it a bit better. Overall, it was pretty good, and I’m sure it would complement a meal quite well.

I like this one. It’s a bit nuttier/roasty than standard genmai cha, which I like.

Dry Leaf Nose: A dark and toasty aroma of roasted rice and roasted tea.

Liquor: Rich pure brown, clear to semi opaque liquor with a dark and toasty aroma.

Flavour: Prevailing notes of toasty rice and grain note. The roasted green tea brings some natural and welcomed bitter notes, while the rice adds a sweet finish that rounds the cup.

I wish my stores had gotten this! I really wanted to try this and the black gyokuro and neither are at any of my stores.

Need more tea! I love toasted rice! And I think Houjicha is a bit underappreciated. This is a good combo! Roasted and savory. It’s also a bit sweet. Very comforting tea. I do feel like classic genmaicha tastes better though.

Had a killer craving for popcorn or pringles tonight, and normal genmaicha just didn’t seem toasty enough, and Lapsang/russian caravan wasn’t what I was looking for, so I figured it was a great time to try the pouch of genmai-houjicha I got a couple months ago.

I have to be in a very specific mood to be able to enjoy genmaicha or houjicha. I just have a hard time appreciating them for the lovely things they are!

I’m REALLY impressed with this one! I was expecting a crisper feel to the cup, but found myself swept up in a wonderful butteryness instead! It’s like drinking buttered toast, a bit more body than a normal genmaicha, but something different, that I can’t put my finger on, than a plain houjicha.

I really need to be in this sort of mood more often, so I can enjoy this on a more regular basis, but it really does take a very specific sort of mood for me to be able to enjoy both genmaicha and houjicha, and I feel a bit guilty for it!

Agh, I keep forgetting that this is one I want to try. Must make a note!

I love Hojicha and I love Genmai Cha, so I thought I’d really enjoy this. And I did, but not as much as I’d hoped. It could have been that it was 12am and I’d had way too much to drink at a party or that I was beat tired trying to watch a less than stellar SNL, but either way, it was only so so. It had a nice butteriness to it, but was missing the slight salty roasty flavor I love in my Hojicha. I’ll try it again before rating it. Maybe with a little less prefunking.

I love genmaicha. It’s one of my favorite kinds of tea – it may even be my favorite. Cheap bagged genmaicha from the grocery store, fancy loose genmaicha mixed with matcha – I love it all. I have peasant tastes, what can I say?

I also like teas with lots of roastiness, so this blend seemed right up my alley. It certainly delivers on the roasted front, but I find it’s strong on the hojicha and weak on the rice. Plus there’s something about the flavor of hojicha that I find slightly off. I’m not sure how to describe it, and I can’t think of anything it compares to. It’s not the roasty quality per se, but I think it must be some kind of consequence of the roasting process. I’ve noticed it here and in Den’s hojicha, so I don’t think it’s staleness or anything like that. It’s not an awful flavor, but I could do without it.

I definitely prefer classic genmaicha – I love the contrast between roasted rice and vegetal green teas, and the hojicha’s weak on the vegetal notes and strong on the unidentifiable weird notes. This isn’t bad, though, and I am enjoying my cup.

I was in the mood for green tea this morning so I got this to go from the store. This definitely has that roasted did-I-make-this-with-water-out-of-the-coffee-maker-? taste. It’s not always my favorite, but this morning it hit the spot. I needed the roasty jolt. It has vegetal undertones, which I love in a great tea. There was also nice, light, buttery aftertaste. Got a little two bitter because I vastly over-steeped. Going to do a second steeping now.

I was a little worried since the girl at my normal store said this tasted like burnt toast but I found a store that had it and got 20g anyway. I was actually pleasantly surprised. I love genmaicha and this was slightly roastier and toastier than the genmaicha, but certainly not bad by any means.

Overall I think I’d prefer the genmaicha but I could see myself purchasing this in smaller amounts to enjoy.

see, i had the guy at david’s tell me this one was more grassy, kind of sweeter and when i smelled it i got that from the smell and it turned me right off of it… i love the genmaicha.

I used to be a green tea on the daily type of girl until I discovered DAVIDsTEA. Genmaicha and Sencha were my go tos! So after all these fun flavored teas for the past few months, I decided to bring some of this home. Boy, am I ever in love. It’s roasty toasty and is everything I enjoyed about Gemaicha with more!

If you like Genmaicha, I recommend this version as well :) I can see this being part of my daily greens when I am in need of a get away from flavoured tea.

Everyone who is reading this who has access to a DAVIDs go and try this. I am not generally a straight green tea drinker but felt like something toasty and different when I stopped at work to drop my coat off being meeting my Uncle for lunch.
I added literally a drop of honey to this and fell in love the second I tried it. sadly I was busy catching up with my uncle and let the cup oversteep and cool before finishing it but this has been instantly added to my regular routine.
