Chocolate Orange

Working on samples again.. so thanks Shmiracles! I opened the little sample bag and ooohhhh yesss… this smells heavenly. The flavor takes me back to Christmas time. The flavor is very rich and spot on. Rich, chocolatey, and just enough orange flavor. It even has a nice creamy note to it :] Thanks again!!

I’ll admit it…I’m overly critical when it comes to orange chocolate ANYTHING.

But I DO really like this. It’s not overly orange-chocolate flavored but the flavor it does have works really well in the Pu-erh base! VERY well, actually. It doesn’t really stop my chocolate craving at the moment but it’s a really tasty cuppa! One I could see having on hand at any time ready to pull off the shelf and sip! :)

My first time trying this since the rebranding as Chocolate Orange. I will review it in a moment, but first, gather ’round, people of Steepster, for storytime!

So DT’s new spring collection came out yesterday and, unsurprisingly, we went to sample them all. Yes, all. We are completionists that way. A usual busy day at our local, and they were having some computer troubles. Long story short, my debit card was double-charged, which I didn’t figure out until later when I tried to buy some delicious baked goods at the local bakery. Boo. I called the store and let them know what had happened, they told me to come in whenever, no problem.

Today, I amble up to the store and one of the girls (we call her Not Hipster Girl – they need to wear nametags!) is standing out front with a tray of samples. She gives me a big ol’ grin and says “Hey! Here to get that refund?” “. . . yes. Hi!”

Up to the counter I go, where Manager and Non-Asian Guy (who had been the one to help me yesterday) are standing. “Hey! So sorry about yesterday, totally my fault.” “Oh no, no, that’s okay, I don’t mind -” “Here, we want you to have 50g of one of the new spring teas, whatever you want. Let’s process that refund. Do you want anything to go?” Yes, 50g of tea and two free cups of tea because of a computer glitch. I cannot say how much I absolutely love DAVIDsTEA’s customer service. It’s just phenomenal, above and beyond any other retail experience I’ve had, tea-related or otherwise.

Anyway. Tea. This is the cup I got to go (the other being an iced Orange Blossom for my wife), my usual hot and black. I steeped it longer than I usually do pu’erhs and I’m actually glad that I did. It had such a rich warmth to it, I was actually kinda stunned for a moment. Just this amazingly complex chocolately taste, with all the shades of mustiness that pu’erhs hold. And then the zip of the orange citrus . . . I need to bump up the rating on this, and bring the small amount in our stash back to the forefront.

Can I put this in both my cupboard and on my shopping list? It is way more awesome than I even imaged, holy.

I kept mouthing “OMG” while drinking it at work. mm!
Okay so, chocolate orange in a cup. I’ll just agree with that, because it is. 100%.

I won’t say the puerh is totally missing from the picture, I can taste a bit of gritty earthiness but it is quickly overwhelmed in both smell and taste by a strong delicious dark and creamy chocolate and perfect orange flavour. loooove.

I was sold in the Regina store with my favorite dude gave me a sample of this as a latte. Please do it. SO GOOD.

p.s. finally caved and bought the Advent Calendar! There are 15 teas on it that I haven’t tried, so I think it’s totally worth it for me ^^

I don’t have a lot of experience with puerh, so I’m always looking for opportunities to expand my knowledge of it. Thanks goes out to Bonnie for this nice sample!

I didn’t know what to expect from this tea. Chocolate and orange go pretty well together, but it’s not usually a combination I seek out. Brewed up 8 oz of tea with 1 1/2 tsp of tea. Put in a bit of rock sugar and waited until it cooled a little.

The cup produced a fragrant earthy cup. I smell the puerh and maybe a bit of chocolate. No citrus yet.

Upon the first taste, I got a nice bright chocolate taste – there’s the orange! The earthiness isn’t so apparent in the taste, but I can smell it when I go in for a sip. It’s pretty good. Nothing too fancy, mostly a chocolate taste with the orange to brighten it up.

I haven’t had this in almost 2 months…waiting for a special moment when I really needed it. And today I see it is available online HOORAY! because I’m having a bad, bad day! Just got a huge bill ($1100) for a broken tooth and $280 for lenses for glasses in the same day…and I have eye Dr. bills and my ex-husband called to say he was not going to pay me the 6 mo. back support he owes!!! OK…this is Lent! I need to calm down and live in the moment and not stress! So, of course I made the very last of my favorite tea…opened the curtains and looked out at the little snowkles (not real snow), then brought up my steepster online friends and shouted, “I LOVE THIS TEA AND ALWAYS WILL!” I’M GOING TO ORDER ENOUGH TO HAVE MANY HAPPY MOMENTS! The choco, orange, earthy…rich and creamy dessertlish drunken wonderful blissfulness! Well,up this goes to 100%

Decided to go for a go-to favourite, and wanted something chocolatey. Chocolate Orange it is! Oh yum. As always, tastes just like a delicious Terry’s Chocolate Orange.

Not a disappointed customer here.

If you look at some of my past tasting notes, you’ll see I’ve been underwhelmed by what many tea blenders have done with chocolate. This is an exception!

When you open the pouch, you get a blast of orange-chocolate fragrance with just a hint of the dusty earthiness of the pu-erh. The tea contains HUGE chocolate shavings; an indication that this is going to be better than most “flavored” teas.

When you prepare this tea, make sure you use a method that allows the water to envelop and wash the tea so the chocolate fully dissolves. In other words, no “tea balls” or steeping baskets on this one; get it right in the water.

This brews to a red-gold and is full of chocolate and orange flavor. Unlike many flavored pu-erh’s, the tea holds up well in this blend and adds body and richness.

This one goes on the (very) short list of teas containing chocolate that I’d drink again.

Tasty! I didn’t expect to like this too much since previous orange flavor things from David’s has been too candy like in the past. Fortunately, this one is more natural with a rich creamy chocolate flavor. The puerh base is also pretty notable. I was a bit surprised by it at first but really started to like the earthy flavor as I continued to sip. The flavors blend so nicely! Very sweet. This might be a good base for hot chocolate or as a latte. Or hot chocolate latte? Holy cow! I’m brilliant. I know what I’m having tomorrow!

Our landlords are useless. Mice in the walls? Nothing is done, so we have to buy traps and catch them. Stove blows up? Still waiting on that one. Front & back walkways need to be shoveled? They leave shovels here for us to do it. The worst part? They’re my best friends parents, which means that even if we find another place I will still probably see them around.

So, for the past 20 minutes I have been outside, shoveling the walkway to the apartment that I am paying to live in when they should be paying me to do their job. I came inside and decided to reward myself by brewing up a cup of this tea. Yeah, I deserve it.

I’m not familiar with pu’erhs, having never tried one before, so I’m not sure how this one rates on that scale. On my scale, this tea is pretty freakin’ amazing! I’m not really a fan of those chocolate oranges, but I’m a fan of this tea! One thing though, I tried this in-store and the chocolate came through much more, but now that I have it at home I find it’s more orange-y. Not a horrible thing, just wish I tasted more chocolate.
