From Bird & Blend Tea Co.

Banoffee pie is one of our absolute favourite sweet treats & this brew pays it homage with hints of creamy banana, sweet cream & a kick of rum to finish it off! Two slices, please!

Krisi’s (chief mixologist) top tips

“This taste’s great hot with milk (especially if you’re a Banana Bread Chai lover), equally good as an iced tea with milk or even cold brewed in milk. I’ve actually made this as an iced tea cocktail, shaken, with a splash of rum… AMAZING!”

2021 sipdown no. 54

This has got a great caramelized banana flavour. The rooibos base complements nicely and adds a bit of a rummy flavour, but I’m happy there’s no actual rum flavour coming through. An overall enjoyable cup. Thanks to Cameron for sharing!

Sipdown! (64)

This was an old subscription tea, from sometime in 2019.

I’ve actually never had a banoffee pie, which is something I should really fix… I love bananas and toffee, so I’m sure I would adore it!

Anyway, this has a very Runt-y banana flavor to me, which isn’t the worst thing, but worth noting. I also get a subtle butter rum sort of note that melds fairly seamlessly with the slightly caramel-y rooibos base.

As good as this one sounds, it’s just okay for me. And I think it’s the combination of the candylike banana with the not-enough buttery toffee. But this tea is also older, so it’s possible it’s lot a bit of its pizzazz over time.

Thankful to not love it though, since it’s not a permanent blend and isn’t available now!

Flavors: Banana, Butterscotch, Candy, Caramel, Rooibos, Rum, Sweet, Toffee, Wood

Banoffee pie is one of our favourites!

Martin Bednář

Yep, it went off the “tea board” last year. Actually, I really liked it; but I understand it isn’t a thing for everyone.

derk

Strange to me you think the banana tastes like Runts. I cannot stand those, the smell alone makes me feel ill. Yet I loved this tea.

Martin Bednář

derk Just after I sent you the package… I found out I had a little pouch with few last grams I wanted to send you. Maybe next time… :D

derk

Martin, if you happen to sip it down before we swap again, that’s quite alright. Thanks for the sentiment :)

Cameron B.

@derk – It is odd, and I love the banana flavor in some of their other teas, like Monkey Chops. Maybe it was the banana combined with something else…? (shrugs)

sipdown! revisit of this one via Variatea and this time it wasn’t as good. lot more woodsy rooibos than before, but still nice to revisit

I have 50 grams of this and I am not sure I am happy with that or not. At times, it is just sweet rooibos. At other times it has caramelized banana all over it. However, caramelized banana runts which is a bit odd. It’s good-ish, I think. Mostly I am confused but will be exploring a bit more. Perhaps a latte would be good?

One thing I’ve kind of known about myself, having twice experienced this before, is that I hate living alone. Having my housemate spending an indefinite amount of time elsewhere since I’m still working with the public as COVID-19 continues to spread has cemented that notion. I am alone and reaching for all the comforting teas to soothe the empty feeling. Black teas, shou puerh, sipping down my vanilla rooibos at night. Then I remembered this rooibos gem. Despite not being a fan of banana in any form, Banoffee Rum-ba envelopes me in a happy blanket.

tea-sipper: I love you. Thank you. (And thank you Martin for providing my first taste of this.) I wish I had taken advantage of the link you provided a few months ago. Please return next season, Banoffee Rum-ba.

Two teaspoons of Banoffee Rum-ba (the amount in the teabag) does not make a better mug. One is sufficient.

Hopefully it will return!
Living alone have advantages and disadvantages, I lived like that 4 months. Almost alone. Other flatmates weren’t much there. It’s just… weird. You know they are there, but you don’t want disturb them. One of them wasn’t even much friendly. I am glad that is over. I wish it will be soon over for you as well.

And naturally, you are welcome, I am glad that you liked it that much that you actually want more (and get more), when I coudln’t.

gmathis

I heard it expressed pretty well elsewhere (can’t remember where) … “it’s just good to know there’s another heartbeat in the house.” Even we introverts need to look into another pair of eyeballs once in a while :)

tea-sipper

You’re welcome! And I had no idea there were two teaspoons remaining… I just poured the rest of the big pouch in the teabag to put it in the tiny packaging. Dang it. I will keep an eye on the VIP site… I check it once in a while.

ashmanra

Aw, derk! Virtual hug sent, and lots of prayer. I used to have NO time alone ever and thought I would do well with it. I do…for a while. I have stopped teaching for now, but hubby and daughter are both working and now with no students coming to break up the day…well….I am alone all day and don’t see a soul. At least I do have someone here to talk to at night, tho.

Mastress Alita

Huh, I guess I’m in the minority, since I moved out when I was 18 I’ve always lived alone and definitely prefer it! I just don’t do as well with other people around. But, I absolutely can’t function without a companion animal! (Does that count…?)

Martin Bednář

This tea is in TEA Election this year. We need to buy lots of them so they will keep this one! I think it is best one from those this year. Although AffogaTEA is interesting as well. Pomergranate and Orange I wasn’t much impressed about. The last one is unknown for me. So if you want some, order soon!

Sipdown (805)!

Thank you Kittenna for the share – this was actually one of the first samples I tried from your package but I’ve been putting off writing the tasting note because I’m not been totally sure how to capture my thoughts. So, I’m gonna try and do it in bullet point form…

- Initially just tasted like sweetened rooibos
- Flavour shifted as the tea cooled though
- Took on more of a sweet banana taste; like banana medicine/runts
- However very delicate
- As well as a creme brulee/lightly caramelized sugar note
- Plus a hint of cream

I… liked it!? I mean, it was really gentle and it the flavours were also a bit generic and hard to nail down. However, they built up over the course of the cup and grew into something surprisingly solid.

Mixed feelings overall.

Thanks for sharing a bit of this, AJRimmer!  How have I never heard of this specific dessert when I actually had the most bestest banana cream pie this week?  Banoffee seems to be the same banana pie but with toffee instead of vanilla pudding.  An interesting concept I would love to try… it seems incredibly sweet in theory.  Brewing this one up, it doesn’t seem overly toffee with only occasional hints of banana.  I was being reminded of some other tea, and realized it was somehow Della Terra’s Lemon Chiffon?!?!  Or since that one reminds me of B&B’s Key Lime Pie… it definitely seemed like that tea.   How the heck does that happen… maybe the lemon cream flavoring is mimicking whatever toffee flavor should be here?  It’s odd, and since it’s reminding me of a lemon tea, it doesn’t seem much like a banana toffee tea.  I know there wasn’t any flavor contamination — it was stored in the original pouch from B&B.    I think B&B’s banana teas need more banana in general.   This one just fails the execution.
Steep #1 // 1 1/4 teaspoons for a full mug // 10 minutes after boiling // 2 minute steep
Steep #2 // just boiled  // 8+ minute steep

So the smell and initial flavor of this were like rotten banana. I was a bit worried. I added some extra sugar and let it cool some more, and it has really become delicious. It’s like having bananas foster. The flavor really lingers in your mouth. Maybe since I always eat my bananas green, I was thrown off by the ripe flavor at first. I don’t know. Bird & Blend has really impressed me so far. All the blends I’ve bought from them have probably the strongest, most unique flavors of any company I’ve tried so far. I’ve tried some of their other flavors in swaps, and I wasn’t always hit with this feeling. Maybe it’s that these three have been extra fresh. Anyway, good stuff. It makes a flavorful second steep as well.

I guess I ordered a fair number of caffeine-free Bird & Blend teas. Luckily, they seem to do such teas pretty well. This is one that sounded just delicious despite the base, and yet again, the flavourings do seem to counteract the base sufficiently to make drinking it enjoyable for me (although like with Moondrop Dreams, it would be better with say, a nice Chinese black base.)

Anyhow, this tea is quite potent upon opening the package. Strong banana and alcohol flavours, along with some sweetness. As is not typical of teas, the tea also actually tasted nearly as strong as the aroma, with delicious banana-rum-toffee sweetness. A hint of rooibos, that I could do without, but the strongest flavours are by far the banana and rum. I’m fairly impressed. Not my favourite tea, but it’s yummy and accurate to its description; I will enjoy what I have of it and that’s probably sufficient for me!

Quick note: This tea is going to be discontinued from tomorrow. Anyone who wants it… it’s time for last orders!

tea-sipper

I tried voting for this one for derk anyway… but nope, it didn’t win.

Martin Bednář

Same tea-sipper; completely same (and I liked it even more than the winner)

derk

Aw, thanks you two. After placing several unnecessary orders in the past month, I’m on a mission to clear my cupboard of anything that I’m not intentionally aging, otherwise I’d order this.

Mastress Alita

The tea I voted for won… sorry for my banana betrayal :-P Probably won’t be the last time.
