From 52teas

Following the success of our Razzleberry (Raspberry & Blackberry) blend and iced tea, I thought we’d give it a try with our genmaicha. And I am not sorry!

Here’s our toasty Japanese genmaicha considerably cheered-up with the sweet and tart flavors of raspberry and blackberry. This is a unique summertime blend of genmaicha, and the combination of the sea-sprayed Japanese sencha, toasty brown rice and berry goodness makes me think of a picnic on the beach.

This is an odd tea. It tastes obviously like genmaicha, but with berries. My taste buds are very conflicted and confused. IMO, the berry flavor and the genmaicha don’t quite work together. Also, the berries taste a bit artificial to me.

Given the popularity of 52teas Genmaicha blends I was surprised that there haven’t been any tasting notes yet and there was still some left in stock. I have to admit that when I first heard about this new blend I wasn’t sure about it. Now having received this as part of my subscription I can’t get enough of it! The raspberry and blackberry combination works so well with the nutty Genmaicha base. The pairing brings out the lovely sweetness from the berries while the nuttiness of the base pulls it all together. With the use of the dried fruit you get an almost cake or cookie like flavoring which is heavenly! This a keeper and I will be scooping up a bunch for sure (for those who like this one, sorry for being a greedy piggy)

Sipdown!

A very pleasant spring tea. I think this is one of my favorite genmaichas from 52Teas—something about the interplay between the toasty rice and the sharp berries is very pleasing to my palate. I also get a smidge of pillowy creaminess, even though this isn’t one of the marshmallow treat genmaichas.

The berries do sound like a nice touch!

Although this blend is packed with beautiful raspberry pieces, the toasted rice makes up most of the flavor. Plain, I couldn’t taste much berry at all. Once I added milk, I tasted more fruit flavor, though it was still mild. It also seemed like a bit of a strange/unnecessary combination. The second time I had this, I tried it sweetened and cold, and it was pretty evenly balanced between the berry and the toastiness. I still don’t really understand this combination though.

This is Day 9 of my Steepster homemade advent calendar from Kelmishka. I wasn’t really sure what to expect based on the name, because what in the world is a razzleberry? An internet search tells me it just means mixed berry! But mostly all I taste is raspberry and the genmaicha base. It’s very light overall, kind of airy for a genmaicha. I tried adding honey to see if sweetener would bring out any other flavors, but no such luck. It tastes good! Just very straightforward, which doesn’t match the name. Would recommend, if you like raspberries.

52Teas

In the world of 52Teas, a razzleberry is a combination of blackberries & raspberries. :)

I dont know if I steeped at too how of a temp, but theres a slight burnt taste here. I iced and lightly sweetened it and it tastes like if I was eating slightly burnt popcorn and berry skittles while watching movie or something. Do they do berry flavored popcorn? I know there’s like caramel and chocolate type popcorn, but what about fruity? I would be interested in trying that.

This tea smells like a bowl of ripe berries and looking at the dry tea to my joy there’s tons of raspberries and blackberries mixed in with the genmaicha base. I wasn’t sure how well the flavours would work together as I’ve never really though of fruit flavours as something that would go well with the maltiness of the genmaicha but the tartness of the berries is what really makes this work. However, I think I might have over-steeped this cup slightly as the grassy flavour of the green tea is quite pronounced. I’ll reduce the steeping length next time to see.

I am enjoying this iced. It is pretty good. I definitely taste berries and the slightly toasty and savory genmaicha flavors. The aftertaste really reminds me of marshmallow treat.

I’d forgotten how nice this one can be between cups, but the fabulously berry-scented dry leaf immediately reminded me! It’s just so delicious — raspberry and blackberry in equal measure. I added 1 tsp of leaf to a cup of cooled water, and gave it about 2.5 minutes.

The genmaicha is very toasty, and adds a slight vegetal note to the overall cup. The berry flavour is fabulously strong and a touch candy-like, and is more than capable of standing up to the genmaicha base. The green tea actually complements the fruit flavours, I feel, helping to emphasise and bring out the fresh fruity notes, rather than the sweet candy notes.

I must try not to go so long between cups next time — this is a tasty summer treat!

It’s been a long while since I’ve had Genmaicha of any sort, hadn’t realized before I took the 1st sip of this how much I missed it. (I’ve only had Fusion’s version and a 1 serving packet from a tea giveaway, didn’t have a label on it, but it was kind of nasty…tasted like burnt rice.) But this definitely reminds me that I need to get more.

Taste-The primary taste is Genmaicha for sure. With a aftertaste of raspberry. Now, while I don’t mind having a cup of this, I am not sure these flavors really meld together. I think Genmaicha would be better along side a Chai because the toasted rice has a really warm taste, whereas berries tend to be better suited to cold teas or hot teas with a white tea base.
From looking at Frank’s other Genmaicha blends, I can see Marshmallow being a good partner, as well as chocolate, caramel. Maybe even coconut.
Though I am not much of a dessert tea fan (Especially with chocolate ones. Just tastes like waterdowned hot chocolate.) I think paired with Genmaicha it might be different enough to me that I would enjoy it.
