Known for their coffee, but also serves loose leaf tea blends from local Vida pour Tea. Great selection of wine, beer, craft sodas, and pastries (including GF) too! Great music, live events, support local artists, and has free wifi, of course! What’s not to love?
stopped in for a quick cup of tea during a First Friday earlier this year. They have a wide selection — I ended up trying a loose leaf coconut oolong, I think it was from Rishi. They have lots of “wellness blends,” and a bit of teaware. They seem to be primarily a bead shop though, which may be a bit off-putting to some. I didn’t see much (or really any) space to sit down and enjoy your tea, so it’s more for take-away. They do have tea tastings and other special events I hope to get to one day.
A lovely place for a small group to sit and enjoy tea. Our group enjoyed sitting in the parlour around the fireplace, talking about our holiday plans, sipping our teas, and just soaking in the cozy pre-holiday hospitality. There is a mind-boggling array of teas (black, greens, rooibos, mate, herbals) that you can sniff before buying. “Passion for Living,” a strawberry green blend, is popular there and in the neighboring restaurant (owned by the same family). I wish I lived closer, I’d be there more often. Gold Hill is a neat town full of 19th C. buildings and NC gold rush history, and Indigo really adds to the atmosphere.
I was so thrilled to see both a “Gluten Free” section on the menu, and a wide range of “milk tea”/“bubble tea” options (hot or cold; lots of flavors; with options to add boba, lychee, or matcha jelly). They also serve a number of “normal” hot teas. See http://www.tearifficsomd.com/drinks/ for the full drinks menu.
I had the GF chow mei fun with chicken, which was piping hot, full of fresh vegetables, and quite filling. The thin slices of chicken were surprisingly tender. The coconut flavored black “milk tea” with matcha jelly was amazing. I’ve never cared much for boba pearls, but I’m a convert to the tiny matcha jelly cubes, which added flavor and texture and were just the right size to slurp through the big fat straw. Just don’t drink it late as night as caffeine + sugar + matcha probably makes this comparable to an energy drink!
I would give this 5 stars if the atmosphere were a bit more inviting. It’s a tad dark, but has nicer decor than most Chinese takeout places. It is clean, fairly spacious, and has an orderly layout. Everything seems to be cooked to order, and was served with a smile. But, it is hard to find, and has a “hole in the wall” vibe (vs. a “date night” spot). Still, I’d give it 4.5 stars if I could. It’s a successful local business that needs/deserves a bigger (or at least brighter) and better location. If this restaurant were in my current hometown, I would surely be a regular!
4 stars for the food and tea, but the atmosphere makes it a 5. Their lobby, with classical music or live piano, is so elegant and relaxing. Be sure to note the text of “Gift of the Magi” painted on the walls!
This is a great place for a mother/daughter tea, sister’s day out, baby/wedding showers, or a date.
Fare choices are Cream Tea, Light Afternoon Tea, O Henry Tea, Child’s Tea and these range from $7 – $20 per person ($20 is with champagne).
As of their current menu, there are Black (5 choices), Green (3), Herbal (5), Oolong (1), and White (1) teas.

“Much more than a coffeehouse” is their motto and it’s true! This cafe has always had a thoughtful selection of loose leaf teas – about 3-5 selections each of black, green, and herbal. Also iced tea and hot or iced chai (from powdered mix). Nice Italian decor. Yummy pastries and desserts, very good sandwhiches. Plenty of seating and free wi-fi, sometimes there’s live music. Beer, wine, and liquor (i.e. real Irish Creme Coffee) as well! I was so glad to go back here after years away and see it’s just as good as ever!
Primarily a coffeeshop, but also serves tea, wine, beer, and soft drinks. Has Red Espresso brand rooibos specialty drinks. Pastries and cheesecake from local bakeries. Occasional live music. Meeting room seats about 8. Free wi-fi.
This is absolutely the best place to get a hot drink downtown. One of the only, in fact. I love the student-friendly atmosphere and rotating artwork by local artists. Also a great place to pick up various indie newspapers and learn about upcoming art/music/theatre events.
Updating to a 4 since it’s still a favorite, years later, if just for the Redespresso drinks. Too bad they no longer have a private meeting room. But they do have a patio out back, and their house sweet tea, with honey and lime is SO refreshing!
I haven’t been in a few years (moved away) but have fond memories of this place and hope to go back soon. Lovely location in La Plata, and the food was always great! Sitting on the front porch to dine in warm weather is a nice option.
Food was overcooked, tea was overbrewed, and portions were miniscule (1/3 of a strawberry, 1 thin slice of apple/orange each and 2 grapes is not a fruit salad!) Decor is nice but won’t be going back.
Outstanding selection of teas and very knowledgeable proprietor.
