I snagged this from a friend’s tea collection last time we hung out, without knowing anything about it. It smelled yummy.

I was a little worried about how it was going to turn out, given all the bad reviews here and the low rating. I’d also grabbed Aloha Puer at the same time and that was awful.

No worries though – this is actually quite delicious. Very tropical, fruity and not at all generic tasting like many fruity green teas. There are distinct notes of pineapple, papaya and mango, and a well balanced rose flavour that makes this pretty unique among the flavoured greens in my collection.

The green tea flavour is pretty subtle – it’s there, but the fruit and floral notes take centre stage here.

I’m pretty impressed with how well this has aged and how much I’m enjoying it.

Flavors: Fruity, Mango, Pineapple, Rose, Sweet, Tropical

Preparation
195 °F / 90 °C 2 min, 0 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

Aloha Pu’Erh is the second lowest rated DT blend on Steepster, the worst one being Cherry Cola. I’ve never had Aloha Pu’Erh (though I’ve smelled it and it smelled so wrong) – but I have had Cherry Cola, and it definitely is worthy of its rating.

OMGsrsly

Cherry Cola was… there are no words.

Wow. I’m impressed that something managed to get a worse overall rating than Aloha Puer, which was all fish and dirt milkshake for me.

Anlina

Hah, it’s the second lowest rated tea on Steepster and the lowest rated on that has any tasting notes. http://steepster.com/teas?page=1311

Earthy, sweet and a bit camphorous. I’ll need to pay closer attention next time.

Ah really nice. Lovely, authentic melon smell and flavour that started off more watermelon honeydew but transitioned to cantaloupe, with a slight earthy, warm white tea base. Very enjoyable. Thank you Janelle for the sample. :)

I’m so appreciative to all the people who have sent me Butiki samples, since I never actually got to place an order myself. I believe this one was from Kaylee, though it’s hard to keep track, as I’ve repackaged a lot of the samples I’ve received.

The dry leaf is so pretty. I love the contrast between the silvery green white tea and the bright, crumbly red of the strawberries. Just lovely. The smell of the dry leaf is pretty intensely strawberry and coconut.

Steeped, the sweet strawberry coconut notes become almost cloying and perfumey. The taste also has these notes, but it’s a much more delicate, smooth expression of strawberry and coconut, that mingles nicely with the hay and faintly vegetal notes of the white tea. The finish is quite sweet strawberry. The coconut gives this a lot of body and a bit of an oily mouth feel.

The flavour of this is really lovely, though the smell is a bit much for me. This sample is a sipdown and I’m okay with it being gone.

Flavors: Coconut, Hay, Perfume, Strawberry, Thick, Vegetal

Preparation
180 °F / 82 °C 3 min, 30 sec 2 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML

This is a lovely autumn flush Darjeeling. The dry leaf is medium sized and fluffy, with a good smattering of golden tips, and lots of golden dust in the bag. It smells sweet, malty and floral.

Steeped, it yields an amber cup that’s really delicious. An excellent balance of malt, fruit and flowers, with just a hint of that pungent, tangy note that most Darjeelings have (cannabis??) Smooth, sweet and delicious, with a medium body.

I don’t know if it’s just been my random selection or if my taste buds have been different lately, but I’ve been finding a lot of sweet malt notes in the Darjeelings I’ve been drinking lately, which I don’t recall experiencing much before in Darjeeling. Very interesting, but a welcome flavour for me.

I saw a post in the forum about this being discontinued, so I figured I might as well try out my sample asap, to see if this is something I need to try and track down before it’s gone forever.

Fortunately, it’s not. It was a tasty, sweet cup that was dominated by coconut, with only a hint of other nuttiness. I didn’t find it particularly unique or amazing. So while I’m glad to have had the chance to try it, I don’t feel like I’ll be missing anything if it is indeed gone.

drank Honeysuckle Oolong by Dachi Tea

I made a pot of this last night, but I think I under leafed, because it was pretty light on the flavour, particularly for a highly oxidized, dark roasted oolong. I’ll try again soon, following their steeping directions.

All I really got from this was a whole lot of chamomile and a hint of lemongrass. Pleasant but not at all what I was expecting from a tisane called Citrus Dream.

Glad to have tried it though!

Flavors: Flowers, Lemongrass

Preparation
205 °F / 96 °C 4 min, 30 sec 1 tsp 6 OZ / 177 ML

Another great sample from Sil!

This is really tasty. Dark chocolate, barley, malt, a hint of smoke, rich dried fruits – sweet and pleasantly bitter. Super smooth.

Initially I found this lacking in a full mouth flavour, but everything intensified and got more well rounded as the cup cooled.

Different from my usual Qimen, and I’m thinking that I need to make a point of trying more.

Flavors: Bitter, Dark Wood, Dried Fruit, Malt, Roasted Barley, Smoke, Smooth, Sweet

Preparation

I think Keemun’s get a bad rap for some reason, but they are oh so yummy and there is so much variety of flavor with in this one type of tea. I loved this one!

Bio

I grew up drinking jasmine green tea with meals, but really fell in love with tea on a trip to Britain in elementary school. My first great love was Earl Grey, and I still adore it and all its variants.

I discovered the beauty of loose leaf tea much later, when, on impulse, I picked up a few teas that were on clearance at a home store. My introduction to loose leaf teas were Masala Chai and Provence Rooibos by the Metropolitan Tea Co and an unknown brand of kukicha and gyokuro (little did I know what a precious treasure I’d stumbled onto with that.)

At the time I was lucky to live in a place with multiple tea shops and several places to have afternoon tea, which is a delight I still miss.

Tea is part of my daily ritual and a nice, affordable way to appease the collector in me.

I enjoy distinctive whites, greens and oolongs, flavoured blacks, and herbals that are heavy on the citrus, lavender or mint.

Rating rubric, to give myself some consistency:
0-15 Yuck, not even drinkable.
16-30 Disappointing, not really inclined to give it a second try.
31-45 Disappointing, but maybe there’s potential? Worth one more try, prepped differently.
46-60 Mediocre, not terrible but not memorable.
61-75 Not bad. I’ll definitely finish what I have and might buy again.
76-90 Very enjoyable. Tasty, complex, it’ll keep me coming back.
91-100 BEST! I love everything about it and I will drink it forever.

Beyond tea, I’m a sex educator, polyamory activist, and radical queer. I love backwoods camping, abstract painting, baking & cooking, nail polish, cats, ceramic sculpture, and home nesting.
