From Verdant Tea

This Bai Mudan is a fresh pre-Qing Ming Spring 2013 harvest from Fuding, the most famous white tea growing region in China. Hand picked and quickly processed to lock in the “fresh from the field” taste that fine white tea preserves, this beautiful tea is one of the most complex and nuanced white teas we have ever tried. Made from a mixture of silver needle white buds and young green leaves, this tea achieves a balance and fully engages the palate in a way that traditional silver needle often struggles to provide.

This spring harvest is extremely sweet like cane sugar and crisp like fresh greens, with intriguing spicy ginger notes in the background and a lychee citrus aftertaste. The body grows creamier and creamier as it steeps out. Astoundingly, we’ve steeped this tea about thirty times and it has continued to yield flavor. These leaves are also extremely forgiving for very long steepings or cold brewed summer iced tea.

I drank several steepings of this during my morning teaching sessions. It’s a pleasant creamy cereal kind of tasting tea, with a vanilla mouthfeel (not taste). There is more subtleties to it than that, but I’m just trying to play catchup between students, so for now, that’s all I got!

Oops, I didn’t add my sample of this to my cupboard, well I did now! I have been making this in my gaiwan all morning for myself and the boy, it snowed here for the first time this season! A nice little icing sugar dusting, it’s chilly out and there’s snowfall warnings for most of the province, but not here that I know of! So I thought a light white tea would go nicely with the light dusting of snow outside :) and I needed to try this sample!

The dry smell is very hay like, reminds me of my beloved Aged Yunnan white that is no longer available at Verdant, so I really like the smell! I have been doing 5 second steepings (+ about 3 for my uncoordinated pouring and preparation lol), and the steepings are light and quite good. A light hay flavor characteristic of white teas, very creamy, a bit crisp, and a bit of a nutty flavor as well. Sweet, soft. Definitely reminding me of that aged Yunnan! I like it! We are on infusions 5 and 6, and still quite a bit of flavor in the leaves. A very enjoyable white tea, and a nice change from my jasmine white teas I have more often it seems haha. Tasty, and the boyfriend likes it too of course!

I’m going to have to give this one another try later since pretty much my feeling on drinking this yesterday was YAWN That’s right…I picked this one up to see if it was something i could offer my parents as a replacement for some of the UBER expensive teas they drank in Paris. Sadly this in no way compared to those. If anything, i’d prefer to be drinking water from a spring. At least i’ve got a bit more to try with again.

What a visually beautiful tea—lots of long green buds of course, but also dark, almost purple leaves. I neglect my whites something awful because something about them makes me want to pause and focus completely on them every step of the steeping and drinking process in a way I never seem to have time for when the urge for that taste strikes, alas. So I wasn’t sure how this would turn out (and it’d be entirely my fault if it was wan, to be clear). But something about the cold weather and a sense of wanting “calm before the storm” of holiday madness made me want this tea tonight, and for once I have the time to devote to it.

I was surprised to find the dry scent surprisingly strong, mostly hay or straw, something like that. First taste is incredibly creamy, and there’s a surprising peppery spicy note at the back of the sip. This is not a particularly delicate or feminine tea, though the scent in the cup is a little bit floral (not rose or lavender-floral, something more jasmine-y, soft instead of soapy). The more I sip, the more the flavor of sweet almond builds, but it always remains subtle. The tea becomes more drying too with each sip.

Quite enjoyable. Going to do the other half of this in my gaiwan another evening this week, I hope.

I find white tea puts me in that calm, almost meditative state too. I find it’s wonderful in the morning. It’s soothing and comforting, but not in the put-you-to-sleep way.

Sadly I drank through the last of my silver needles the other day, so now I’m looking into hitting up Verdant for some of this as well as their jasmine needles. :)

Cool to know it’s not just me! I always worry my half-braindead-still self (I’m not a morning person, heh) won’t appreciate whites then, but maybe I ought to try that. I know they have the potential to be quite caffeinated…

I still need to try my silver needle samples too. :O So neglectful…I hope your new teas end up being awesome!

I’m just going to start another box with your name on it……….

Tea #18 from HHTTB2

Delicately hay flavored, with toasted nut notes, and a splash of ginger. A slightly creamy mouthfeel (reminds of teas using really vanilla bean). A mellow cup, with a clean finish.

This is the last of my sample, but I’ve already ordered more. I do still need to order more of my other favorite white tea though.

The piano tuner is here and he took my offer for some tea. yay! I love to share tea. He asked for a black tea, so I only brewed this white one for myself.

A sample from the lovely High Adventure. Thank you!
I have had this tea a total of three times now.
This tea fascinates me.
The first time I tried this tea, I got more a savory experience, then the second time more of a bakery experience.
I waited to review this tea for my third tasting, to see if there is a tie breaker or some new experience coming through.
The dry leaves of this tea really do not smell much like anything at all.
But,once I add the water and stick my big ol’ Italian schnoz down into the steeping basket, I get a very lovely aroma.
Sometimes its a bit vegetal, other times it smells rather nutty or like bread baking.
As I grasp the mug in my hands and take a whiff in this moment, it smells like homemade bread baking in the oven.
Which is rather lovely, in my opinion.
Taste I am getting at first is toasted nuts, then some avocado.
The tea ends rather dry.
I have enjoyed drinking this tea and have found it to be a very interesting experience.

This tea looks interesting! White and downy on one side (so soft!) and dark, almost purple, on the other. Beautiful contrast. The leaves smell a little like hay to me. I’m hoping for lots of chaqi — I need a boost today! Lots of work to do with very little energy to do it.

The tea is a lovely white wine color and smells very strongly of hay. It reminds me of when I was young and used to hang around the local stable to take riding lessons and bond with the horses. Gotta love it when a tea brings back memories!

This tea makes me think of summer. It’s light and has a clean flavor and I’m getting hay, hay, hay. I like it! So far I’m not feeling super energized, but definitely more relaxed.

Resteeping now… let’s see how this tea changes. There are a lot of stems. Still getting that strong clean hay taste but there’s some grassy notes coming out too. This is an interesting tea, and a little different from the other Verdant teas I’ve tried. If you are a white tea fan, or have happy memories of feeding hay to horses, try this tea!

Thank u to Terri Harplady for this sample!!!!!! :) :) :)

Pretty leaves, dark green on one side and a fuzzy cream white on the other. They smell creamy too. I love white teas, I can’t wait to taste.

The instructions say to brew at 175 for 2’’. Other whites I’ve had say to go at 185 and for a touch longer.

This white has very subtle creamy and almond notes.

The next steeping, I upped to 185 and added a pinch more leaves that I had left in my sample then steeped a bit longer. I learned in my tea experiments that the notes aren’t gonna change but a stronger version of them will come thru hopefully.

This white is still very delicate and subtle to me. Other whites I’ve had have a sweet nectar note along with a few other surprises in with the cream note but this one does not for me.

Tea #36 from the Here’s Hoping TTB

I know I’ve had this tea before, but apparently I have yet to rate it, I’m not sure why though since I’ve been out of it for awhile. It’s such a lovely looking tea, the dry leaf has a soft fuzzy feel to it and looks nearly purple in places. The flavor is very delicate, with a somewhat sweet, yet nutty flavor. It has a somewhat creamy mouthfeel to it, although not nearly as noticeable as some of my favorite teas from Verdant. Even though I do really enjoy this tea, it isn’t likely to be a reorder for me, just because I have other whites from Verdant that I enjoy more. Either way, I was glad to be able to try it again.
