From Stash Tea

For many years, Stash Earl Grey Tea has been a favorite of tea lovers. Many people seem to love the careful balance of citrusy oil of bergamot and the blend of fine black teas which our Earl Grey blend is famous for. Certain Earl Grey fanatics have grown especially fond of the top grade Calabrian oil of bergamot that we use and have asked for more, ..More,… MORE! Thus Stash Double Bergamot Earl Grey was born.

This is a great late afternoon or early evening tea. It goes very well with shortbread and cream scones. And for a uniquely appealing cold beverage, try Double Bergamot Earl Grey tea on ice.

Ingredients: blended black teas, bergamot extract
Steeping Instructions: 3-5 minutes at 190-209 degrees Fahrenheit
Caffeinated: Yes

Once upon a time this was my favourite tea in the world and it still holds a fond place in my heart. Plenty of bergamot in this, to the point of nearly overpowering the tea base. Lovely aroma and pleasant taste. For a bagged tea, this is a decent one.

When I first got into the tea game, the only type of tea I could name was Earl Grey. And I wasn’t even able to name more than like two or three brands. After experimenting around with a few of the local brands, I finally stumbled onto Stash’s version of Earl Grey.

This stuff is fantastic. The thickness of the oil is what really sticks out here— I like that instead of just flavoring the water, the whole drink is given a completely different texture. I can feel the coating it leaves on my throat in a comforting way.

If you’re feeling adventurous, I would look for something else. However, because it’s so cheap and easily accessible at stores like Walmart or Target, this will always remain a basic favorite in mine and maintain a permanent place in my cupboard.

I was already a big fan of Stash’s SINGLE Bergamot Earl Grey tea so I wondered if doubling the Bergamot content was really necessary. The consistency of Bergamot seemed perfect to me. But, when I noticed that the Double Bergamot Earl Grey selection was on sale for a very low price at our fine local French boutique, Tarzhay (spelled T-a-r-g-e-t), my curiosity was too strong to be denied. While steeping the turbo Bergamot blend, I immediately noticed the fortified aroma escaping from my cup. After five minutes, I fastened my seat belt and raised the cup cautiously to my lips. The powerful Bergamot scent slapped me in the nostrils all the way up. As the potent tea swished around my palate, my taste buds were instantly washed in the bright and sunny fruity flavor of the supercharged Bergamot. Although the aspect of tea is definitely relegated to the back seat of this variety, enough is present to create the total sensation of a divine and effervescent compound. After finishing the cup, a zesty aftertaste was left behind that reminded of this great experience. I am captivated by this compelling blend. I fear that there may no longer be sufficient chills and thrills in standard Bergamot tea for my newly enhanced sense of adventure.

I’ve always been a fan of Earl Grey, and never fail to be disappointed when the bergamot flavor is too light. Because of this, double the bergamot sounded delightful. Upon first tasting this tea, “delightful” couldn’t have been further from the truth, as the bergamot overpowered the tea flavor to the point it no longer even tasted like Earl Grey.

This time, however, I shortened my steeping time considerably for much better results. While the bergamot did take center stage, there was still a “tea” undertone that smoothed out the vibrant citrus notes. The liquer was a deep amber red color, with an aroma that was a little earthier than I would have expected.

Because of the short steeping time, I attempted to get a second cup out of the teabag and met with success. The liquer was a little lighter, but it tasted much the same as the first.

This is one of the best bagged Earl Greys you can find. There’s nothing like the bergamot to give this kind of tea its unique flavor, and doubling up on this exotic citrus flavor enhances the tea’s rich, refreshing qualities.
